Simple Past Tense

Introduction

  • Simple Past Tense is used to describe actions or events that occurred in the past.
  • Part of the 8th grade English curriculum under "The Beginning" chapter in Merdeka Curriculum.

Key Points

  • Usage: Express things or activities that happened in the past.
  • Formula/Rule: Important to understand and apply the formulas in speaking and writing.

Positive Sentences

  • To Be Verbs:
    • "I/He/She/It" uses was.
    • "We/They/You" uses were.
  • Examples:
    • "She was late to school yesterday."
    • "We were a team."
    • "They were our team competitors."
  • Regular Verbs use the second form of the verb (Verb 2):
    • "Alan went to the grocery store yesterday."
    • "Siti left her dictionary in the classroom yesterday."

Negative Sentences

  • With To Be Verbs:
    • Add not after "was" or "were".
    • Examples: "I was not good at drawing."
  • With Regular Verbs:
    • Use did not + base form (Verb 1).
    • Examples: "Abe did not go to the grocery store yesterday."
    • Exercises: Pay attention to placement of "did" and the base form.

Interrogative Sentences

  • With To Be Verbs:
    • "Was" or "Were" at the beginning of the sentence.
    • Examples:
      • "Was Pipin happy to stay here?"
      • "Were you late for school?"
  • With Regular Verbs:
    • Use "did" at the beginning, followed by the subject and base form of the verb.
    • Examples:
      • "Did Yusuf go to the grocery store yesterday?"
      • "Did Andri play video games?"

  • For questions, place "did" at the beginning.
  • Follow with the subject and Verb 1.
