Overview

This lecture discusses the division of Germany during the Cold War, contrasting the political and economic systems of East and West Germany, major events in Berlin, and the eventual reunification of the country.

Division of Germany After WWII

  • After WWII, Germany was split into the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG, West) and German Democratic Republic (GDR, East).
  • The West (FRG) was controlled by the US, UK, and France; the East (GDR) was ruled by the USSR.
  • Berlin, though located inside the GDR, was divided among the Allies due to its symbolic importance.

Contrasts Between FRG and GDR

  • The FRG experienced democracy and rapid economic recovery known as the "German economic miracle."
  • The GDR was an authoritarian, repressive state with strict government control over society and the economy.
  • The differences in freedom and prosperity between East and West were stark.

Major Cold War Events in Berlin

  • In 1948-1949, the USSR enforced the Berlin Blockade to cut off West Berlin from supplies.
  • The US and UK responded with the Berlin Airlift, supplying West Berlin by air for nearly a year.
  • The blockade was lifted by the Soviets in May 1949 after it failed.

The Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain

  • Many East Germans fled to the FRG for greater freedoms.
  • To stop this, the Soviets closed borders and built the Berlin Wall in 1961, physically dividing East and West Berlin.
  • The "Iron Curtain" symbolized the division between the communist East and democratic West.
  • Berliners attempted dangerous escapes by tunnel, climbing, or hiding in vehicles.

Fall of the Berlin Wall and German Reunification

  • In 1989, mass protests and the weakening USSR led to the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9.
  • The fall enabled the reunification of Germany, which became official on October 3, 1990.
