Overview

This lesson explains what osmosis is, how it works, what solutes and osmolarity mean, and why these ideas matter for body fluids. Everything is broken down into simple steps and easy words.

Osmosis: The Basics

  • Osmosis is when water moves from one place to another through a special barrier (called a semi-permeable membrane).
  • Water moves from where there is more water (and less stuff dissolved in it) to where there is less water (and more stuff dissolved in it).
    • (Think: water goes from the “watery” side to the “salty” side.)
  • This happens on its own—no energy or effort is needed from the cell.
  • The membrane only lets water pass through, not the other stuff (solutes).

Solutes and Osmosis

  • A solute is something solid that gets dissolved in a liquid (like salt or sugar in water).
  • On one side of the membrane, there might be lots of water and not much solute; on the other side, there’s less water and more solute.
  • Water always moves toward the side with more solute (where it’s “saltier” or “more crowded”).
  • How much solute is in the fluid decides how much and which way water moves.

Osmolarity

  • Osmolarity means how much solute is in a certain amount of liquid (how “crowded” the water is with stuff).
  • High osmolarity = lots of solute, not much water.
    • (Think: super salty water)
  • Low osmolarity = not much solute, lots of water.
    • (Think: plain water)
  • The osmolarity of fluids (like IV fluids given in hospitals) affects how water moves between different parts of the body.
