Diarrhea: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments
Overview
- Diarrhea is an illness characterized by more liquid bowel movements than usual, occurring more frequently.
- It is one of the most common health complaints, varying from mild to life-threatening.
- Globally, approximately 2 billion cases occur annually, with 1.9 million children under five, mainly in developing countries, dying from it.
Causes
- Viruses: Norovirus, rotavirus.
- Bacteria: Campylobacter, E. coli (often from contaminated food).
- Parasites: Giardiasis (spread via contaminated water).
- Travel: Known as travelers' diarrhea, common in areas with poor public hygiene.
- Other Factors: Anxiety, food allergies, medications, chronic conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Signs and Symptoms
- Main symptom: Loose, watery stools 3+ times a day.
- Other symptoms:
- Urgent need to use the toilet.

- Dehydration signs (serious if untreated):
- Tiredness, lack of energy, loss of appetite, nausea.

- Muscle cramps, rapid heartbeat.
Diagnosis
- Physical exam and medication review by a doctor.
- Tests:
- Blood tests: Complete blood count to help determine the cause.
- Stool tests: Identify bacteria or parasites.
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy: Examine colon lining, provide biopsies if needed.
Treatment
- Most cases resolve on their own within a few days without treatment.
- If lifestyle changes and home remedies fail:
- Medications: Antibiotics for bacterial or parasitic causes (not viruses).
- Fluid replacement: Essential to replace fluids and salts.
- For adults, drink water or juice.
- If oral intake causes issues, intravenous fluids may be recommended.
Conclusion
- Diarrhea is common but can be serious.
- Recognizing symptoms early and seeking medical advice is crucial.
- Maintaining hydration and following medical guidelines helps manage the condition effectively.
