Framework for Solving Problems: The COAST Framework

In your science textbook, the recommended framework for solving problems is the COAST Framework. It's one of many frameworks available to help keep track of problem-solving steps. You are encouraged to find a framework that works best for you. The COAST Framework consists of the following steps:

1. Collect

  • Goal: Gather all necessary information.
  • Includes:
    • Equations
    • Unit conversions
    • Your thoughts and notes
  • Action: Write everything down in one place.

2. Organize

  • Goal: Determine how the collected information fits together.
  • Methods:
    • Identify which pieces and equations go together.
    • Units can often guide the organization.
    • Choose the right equation for the problem.

3. Analyze

  • Goal: Evaluate information and relationships.
  • Challenges:
    • Ensure the variables in the equations are correct.
    • Be cautious with ambiguous variable naming, such as the use of 'k'.

4. Solve

  • Goal: Perform calculations.
  • Steps:
    • Execute calculations.
    • Ensure unit consistency.
    • Use equations that have been organized.

5. Think

  • Goal: Reflect on the solution.
  • Checks:
    • Does the answer make sense?
    • Consider the magnitude and units.
    • Evaluate if the solution is reasonable for the asked question.

Additional Information:

  • Example Practice: Multiple examples will be practiced in person to better understand and apply the COAST framework.
