Sep 4, 2024

Lecture Notes: Genesis 3-4

The Temptation and Fall of Man

  • The Serpent's Deception

    • The serpent, described as crafty, questions the woman (Eve) about God's command.
    • Eve responds that they may eat from any tree except the one in the middle of the garden.
    • The serpent contradicts God, suggesting eating the fruit will make them like God, knowing good and evil.
  • The Fall

    • Eve sees the fruit is good and desirable for wisdom, eats it, and gives some to Adam.
    • Their eyes are opened; they realize their nakedness and make coverings from fig leaves.
  • Confrontation with God

    • Hearing God, Adam and Eve hide.
    • God questions Adam, who blames Eve; Eve blames the serpent.
  • Consequences of the Fall

    • Serpent: Cursed to crawl and eat dust, enmity with the woman's offspring.
    • Woman: Increased pain in childbirth, desire for husband, male rule.
    • Man: Cursed ground, hard labor for food, mortality ("dust you are and to dust you will return").
  • Expulsion from Eden

    • Adam and Eve are banished to prevent access to the Tree of Life.
    • Cherubim and a flaming sword guard the Tree of Life.

Cain and Abel

  • Birth and Occupations

    • Eve gives birth to Cain and Abel.
    • Abel is a shepherd; Cain is a farmer.
  • Offerings to God

    • Abel's offering (firstborn flock) is favored by God.
    • Cain's offering (fruits) is not favored, leading to anger.
  • Cain's Sin and Punishment

    • Cain kills Abel after God warns him about sin.
    • God confronts Cain about Abel's absence.
    • Cain becomes a cursed wanderer; marked by God for protection.
  • Genealogy and Descendants

    • Cain's lineage includes Enoch (city builder), with descendants such as Lamech.
    • Lamech's family includes innovators in livestock, music, and metal tools.

Birth of Seth

  • New Hope
    • Adam and Eve have another son, Seth, seen as a replacement for Abel.
    • Seth's birth marks a new beginning for worshipping God.
