Overview

This lecture covers the key concepts, purposes, and techniques of summarizing academic texts, including the use of reference citations and graphic organizers.

Definition and Purpose of Summarizing

  • Summarizing is a brief restatement of a text's main points using your own words.
  • The two main goals are: restate the main idea/key points, and do so in as few words as possible.
  • Summaries must not include personal opinions or use the original text’s exact wording.
  • Summaries can be as short as one sentence or longer, depending on the original text.

Benefits of Summarizing

  • Helps identify key points and ignore irrelevant information, improving text analysis skills.
  • Enhances memory and reading comprehension by focusing on important details.
  • Allows self-evaluation of how well the original text is understood.

Steps and Tips for Summarizing

  • Read the text carefully.
  • Ask: What is the main idea/topic? What are the crucial supporting details?
  • Highlight, underline, or note important points.
  • For essays, outline the writer’s arguments.
  • Summarize key points in the same order as the original text (chronological order).
  • Find the main idea in the topic sentence, usually at the beginning or end of a paragraph.

Techniques in Summarizing

  • Use your own words to avoid plagiarism.
  • Identify and restate only the main idea and supporting points.
  • Avoid copying exact phrases from the original text.

Reference Citation Techniques

  • Author citation in the body: Mention the author's name and year within the summary sentence (e.g., "According to Smith (2020)...").
  • Author citation in brackets: Include the author and year in parentheses at the end of the sentence (e.g., "... (Smith, 2020)").

Use of Graphic Organizers

  • Graphic organizers visually display key information using charts, grids, spider maps, timelines, tables, Venn diagrams, H-graphs, fishbone diagrams, pie, bar, and line graphs.
  • Choose the appropriate organizer based on the type of data (e.g., pie chart for percentages, timeline for events).
