Classification of Artificial Intelligence

Overview

  • AI can be classified into two main categories:
    • AI Capabilities
    • AI Functionalities

AI Capabilities

1. Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)

  • Known as "Weak AI."
  • The only type of AI that exists today.
  • Capable of performing a narrow task.
  • Requires human training.

2. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

  • Also known as "Strong AI."
  • Currently theoretical.
  • Can use previous learnings to accomplish new tasks in different contexts without human intervention.

3. Artificial Super Intelligence

  • Theoretical future AI.
  • Would surpass human cognitive abilities.
  • Could possess emotions, needs, beliefs, and desires.

AI Functionalities

1. Reactive Machine AI

  • Performs specific, specialized tasks.
  • Analyzes data to produce intelligent outputs.
  • Example: IBM’s Deep Blue chess computer.

2. Limited Memory AI

  • Can recall past events and outcomes.
  • Monitors objects or situations over time.
  • Improves performance with more data.
  • Example: Generative AI chatbots.

3. Theory of Mind AI

  • Theoretical and part of AGI development.
  • Would understand thoughts and emotions of others.
  • Could infer human motives and personalize interactions.
  • Example: Emotion AI currently under development.

4. Self-aware AI (Under Super AI)

  • Theoretical and part of Super AI.
  • Would understand its own internal conditions and traits.
  • Could lead to emotions, needs, and beliefs of its own.

Conclusion

  • Out of the seven types of AI, only Narrow AI, Reactive Machine AI, and Limited Memory AI exist today.
  • The remaining types are still theoretical and in development.
  • This classification provides a framework to understand and track AI advancements.
