Understanding the Nature of God in the Bible

Introduction to the Complexity of God

  • The Bible presents God as both one entity and as three entities: Father, Son, and Spirit.
  • This concept has been challenging to fully understand.
  • An analogy is used to explain: a 3D object passing through a 2D plane appears different from the 2D perspective, illustrating something beyond normal understanding.

God's Complex Identity in the Hebrew Scriptures

God's Attributes

  • God's attributes are portrayed as distinct characters while still being God.
    • Wisdom: Described in Proverbs as both a method and a person through whom God created the universe.
    • Glory: Sometimes appears as a human figure, distinct yet part of God's identity.
    • Word: God's word is both a spoken message and a personified entity.

God's Spirit

  • Introduced in the opening lines of the Bible: "Spirit of God" is God's presence and energy.
  • The Spirit is distinct and yet part of God.

The Son of Man

  • Daniel's Vision: Son of Man (a human figure) elevated to God's realm, worshiped alongside God.
  • Represents the hope of God and humanity uniting to rule together.

Transition to the New Testament

Jesus of Nazareth

  • Jesus is introduced as human and more, called himself "Son of Man."
  • Portrayed as both fully human and divine (Yahweh, the God of Israel).
    • Did actions only attributed to Yahweh, such as forgiving sins.
    • Followers described Jesus using attributes of God: Glory, Wisdom, Word.
    • Jesus: distinct from God, yet also God.

Relationship with the Father

  • Jesus referred to God as "Father," a personal being, not abstract.
  • Jesus experienced God as a source of infinite love.
  • Baptism Story: Father declares love for Jesus; message delivered by the Spirit.

Role of the Spirit

  • Through the Spirit, Jesus and humanity experience the Father's love.
  • Jesus promises the Spirit will extend the Father's love to all.

The Concept of the Trinity

  • Trinity: Father, Son, and Spirit are one God.
  • Describes an eternal community of love that holds the universe together.
  • The goal is not to understand God but to know and participate in His love.
