Plant and Animal Life Cycles

Dec 21, 2025

Overview

  • Lecture covers life cycles of plants and animals (chapter 10, part 2).
  • Emphasis on stages, key terms, diagrams, and simple classroom activities.
  • Practical safety advice for preventing mosquito breeding.

Life Cycle Of A Bean Plant

  • Stage 1: Seed buried in soil.
  • Germination: seed sprouts when provided water (some need light).
  • After germination: root (under soil) and shoot (above soil) form.
  • Stage 3: Shoot develops into stem and leaves.
  • Stage 4: Flowers appear.
  • Stage 5: Fruits develop, containing seeds (e.g., beans/peas).
  • Final: Plant withers and dies after fruiting; seeds can be sown to restart cycle.
StageDescription
SeedBuried in soil; begins life cycle.
GerminationSprout emerges; root and shoot form.
VegetativeShoot develops into stem and leaves.
FloweringFlowers appear on plant.
Fruiting & SenescenceFruits form; plant later withers and dies.

Life Cycle Of A Mosquito

  • Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water; eggs are laid on/near water.
  • Larva and pupa are aquatic, worm-like stages seen on water surface.
  • Larvae and pupae rise to surface to get air for respiration.
  • Prevent breeding by removing stagnant water and reporting larvae/pupae.
  • Kerosene oil can be applied to water surface to form a thin layer, blocking air and killing larvae/pupae.

Activity (to determine sequence of larva and pupa)

  • Separate larvae and pupae into two identical containers with pond water.
  • Observe daily to see which stage changes into the next.
  • From observation: Egg → Larva → Pupa → Adult mosquito.
StageDescription
EggLaid on/near stagnant water.
LarvaWorm-like stage living in water; breathes at surface.
PupaTransitional, aquatic stage; breathes at surface.
AdultEmerges ready to fly and bite.

Life Cycle Of A Frog

  • First stage: Spawn — jelly-like cluster of frog eggs attached to plants or floating.
  • Day 1 → Days 3–4: Spawn develops into embryo.
  • Stage 2A: Tadpole with tail appears around day 7–10.
  • Stage 2B: Tadpole develops hind legs (around 8–10 weeks).
  • Stage 3: Froglet stage (around 12 weeks) — tail reduces, limbs develop.
  • Stage 4: Adult frog (around 14 weeks).
StageTiming / Features
Spawn (Eggs)Jelly-like clusters on water or plants.
EmbryoDevelops within spawn by day 3–4.
Tadpole (tail)Appears day 7–10; aquatic with tail, no legs.
Tadpole (legs)Hind legs appear; ~8–10 weeks.
FrogletTransitional form with shrinking tail; ~12 weeks.
Adult FrogFully formed frog; ~14 weeks.

Key Terms And Definitions

  • Germination: Eruption of a sprout from a seed under suitable conditions.
  • Spawn: Cluster of frog eggs, jelly-like, found on or near water.
  • Larva (mosquito): Aquatic worm-like stage after egg.
  • Pupa (mosquito): Aquatic transitional stage between larva and adult.
  • Tadpole: Early aquatic stage of frog with tail; later grows legs.
  • Froglet: Young frog in transition from tadpole to adult.

Safety, Prevention, And Classroom Actions

  • Safety Audit: Check school/home for stagnant water (coolers, plant pots, open containers).
  • Report: If larvae or pupae are found, inform teacher or responsible adult.
  • Prevention: Remove or cover stagnant water to stop mosquito breeding.
  • Demonstrations: Practice drawing and labeling life-cycle diagrams for exams.
  • Teacher Activities: Observe pond spawn from a distance; avoid disturbing wildlife.

Next Steps / Homework

  • Practice diagrams for plant, mosquito, and frog life cycles for exams.
  • Complete NCERT exercise questions; instructor will upload solutions and PDF.
  • Request extra questions in comments if more practice is needed.
