Lecture Notes: Setting Up a Medical Ventilator

Initial Setup

First Screen Options

  • Three Options Available:
    • New Patient
    • Same Patient
    • Short Self-Test

Starting a New Patient

  • Selections to Make:
    • Input actual gender and height of the patient.
    • Select mode and primary settings.

Mode Selection

Types of Ventilation Modes Available

  • Invasive vs Non-Invasive
    • Starting example with Invasive.
  • Modes:
    • Assist Control
    • SIMV (Synchronized Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation)
    • Spontaneous
    • Bi-Level

Ventilation Type

  • Options:
    • Pressure Control
    • Volume Control
    • VC Plus
  • Example Choice: Volume Control

Additional Features by Mode

  • SIMV Mode:
    • Pressure Support
    • Tube Compensation (TC)
  • Spontaneous Mode:
    • Pressure Support
    • TC
    • Volume Support
    • PAV+ (Proportional Assist Ventilation)
    • Trigger types (Pressure and Flow). Default: Flow

Primary Settings

Respiratory Rate

  • Adjusted with a knob.
  • Example setting: 12

Total Volume

  • Example adjustment: 500

Peak Flow

  • Example setting: 60

Trigger Sensitivity

  • Example setting: 3

Oxygen Percentage (O2)

  • Example starting value: 40%-50%

High Pressure Limit

  • Example setting: 40 cm of water pressure

Plateau Time

  • Adjustable up to 2 seconds

Flow Pattern

  • Options: Square or Ramp
  • Example choice: Ramp

PEEP Setting

  • Example setting: 5 cm

Finalizing Setup

Start Ventilation

  • Initiate Process:
    • Press the start button once settings are confirmed.
    • Ventilator enters "Waiting for patient" status.
    • Confirm to start or connect circuit to patient to auto-start.

Quick Start Option

  • Input gender and height for immediate setup.
  • Useful when settings are predetermined and speed is necessary.
