Lecture Notes: Meditation Techniques and Bhagavad Gita Study

Opening Prayers

  • Traditional chanting and prayers to invoke auspiciousness and blessing.
  • Importance of prayer in creating a conducive environment for meditation and study.

Meditation Techniques

  • Upasana (Meditation Technique): Discussed in Upanishads, involves choosing an altar (focus point) for concentration.
    • The choice of altar is less important than the ability to focus the mind.
    • The altar should be Shastriya (based on scriptures), such as forms of deities, Shivalinga, or Vibhuti from Bhagavad Gita.
    • Focus on the Lord through the chosen altar, understanding the Lord's nature.
  • Memorizing Verses: Helpful in meditation to remind of the Lord's nature.
  • Verse from 8th Chapter, 9th Verse of Bhagavad Gita: Used for SaguƱa Dhyanam (meditation on the qualified Brahman).
    • Kavim (all-knowing), Puranam (ancient) - indicators of Bhagavan.

Differences Between Upasana and Vedantic Meditation

  • Upasana is person-dependent (Purusha Tantra), while Nididhyasana (Vedantic meditation) is not.
  • In Vedantic meditation, no support is given; consciousness is the focus.

Bhagavad Gita 13th Chapter Discussion

  • Arjuna's Questions: About Prakriti, Purusha, Kshetra, Kshetrajna, Jnanam, and Nyaya.
  • Bhagwan's Teaching:
    • Kshetra (Field): Body where karma is harvested.
    • Kshetrajna (Knower of the Field): The entity knowing the body; ultimately identified with Lord.
    • Knowledge (Jnanam): Understanding Kshetra and Kshetrajna is true knowledge.

Sankhya Philosophy and Creation

  • Discussed the process of creation:
    • Starts with Avyakta (Unmanifest), progresses through Buddhi (Total Mind), Ahankara (Cosmic Ego), leading to subtle and gross creation.
    • 24 Elements of Creation: Comprises Mahabhutas (5 elements), Ahankara, Buddhi, Avyakta, Indriyas (10 sense organs), Mind, and Sense Objects.

Importance of Understanding Kshetra and Kshetrajna

  • Stuti (Praise): Emphasized to create interest in the study.
  • Significance of Scriptural References: Chandobihi (Vedic meters), Brahma Sutras all address this theme.

Practical Application

  • Encourage self-reflection on where the mind focuses: Kshetra or Kshetrajna.
  • Continuous practice and memorization of scriptures aid in understanding and meditation.

Closing Remarks

  • Encouragement to memorize important verses and engage in self-reflection.
  • Reminder of ever-present liberation and purity within oneself.
