Overview

This lecture introduces five critical features of evidence-based classroom management and a comprehensive online resource to help teachers implement these practices effectively.

Five Critical Features of Classroom Management

  • Maximize classroom structure by establishing routines and organizing the physical environment.
  • Clearly define and directly teach behavioral expectations to students.
  • Actively engage students in instruction to minimize problem behaviors.
  • Develop a continuum of strategies to acknowledge appropriate student behaviors.
  • Develop a continuum of strategies to discourage inappropriate behaviors.

Implementing and Contextualizing Management Features

  • These features apply across grade levels and instructional settings, but should be adapted to fit classroom culture and student needs.
  • Effective classroom management focuses on changing the environment and teacher behavior, not "fixing" students.

The Supporting and Responding to Student Behavior Resource

  • The resource is interactive and best used online for access to hyperlinks and self-assessments.
  • Features an interactive map for navigating foundational practices, prevention, acknowledgment, responding to behavior, and data systems.
  • Includes a self-assessment tool with yes/no questions to identify areas for growth.
  • Contains a decision-making guide for responding to varying levels of student behavior.
  • Provides tables for each feature with examples, common errors, empirical support, and further resources.

Tools and Scenarios in the Resource

  • Offers fast-response tools for addressing different types of student behavior effectively (Functionally Accurate, Specific, and Timely).
  • Includes real-life scenarios for both elementary and secondary classrooms demonstrating the implementation of these practices.
  • Additional resources and learning materials are available through embedded links.
