Insights on Playwriting and Collaboration

i think maybe for me it's a vicarious life because i had polio when i was a kid when i was 15 and i've walked with crutches ever since so i don't dance i don't jump i don't run i don't do all of that stuff and i love all that physical activity so i get to just write it down like that and other people do it for me okay this is kind of my way of writing plays of i write the plays i want to go and see uh i write what i love and since i'm the world's leading expert on what i love i can't be wrong and then since i'm not from mars there will be two or three other people who will like it too that's my whole sort of theory of playwriting because it's my vicarious life i've been working with chuck since i believe maybe 19 91 89 89 89 it's a play that's been incredibly popular it's been done everywhere it's been done all around the country and in london and dublin and china and india but it's never been done by tina and so after 25 years of working together i finally get tina to do it and i'm scared to do this play because because it's been done so much when you go into his world you need to allow yourselves to go from a to f to j to x and trust as i do that something is going to emerge you know as open as the text is to directorial choices it goes the same with casting and you find that any given choice you make about age or skin color or anything is possible and changes meaning and so i go into the casting less with a sense of i need that kind of person to do that and more than that i i'm interested in people who feel like they are of a chuck me play world there's no one thing it is supposed to be and i can't decide what it's going to be because i can't decide without you and i can't decide without that piece of music that comes in next week and without you know so something will emerge and the most simple idea that i'm interested in and that i think all our design reflects is that love starts and begins with something that feels good and seems romantic and that the more time passes the messier and more complicated it gets it's that simple you
