Nature and Process of Communication

Definition of Communication

  • Sending and receiving messages using various forms (symbols, gestures, sounds, drawings, sign languages)
  • Advanced over years with technology: text messages, phone calls, video calls, chat messages.

Importance of Communication

  • Keeps social beings connected and helps build relationships
  • Example: Comic strip showing unsuccessful communication between Gary and Ben due to lack of listening.

Forms of Communication

  • Written Communication: Letters, text messages, emails, chat messages
  • Spoken Words (Verbal Communication): Sounds produced using vocal tract
  • Nonverbal Communication: Gestures, posture, facial expressions, hand signals

Elements of Communication

  1. Sender: Source of message (could be the speaker or you)
  2. Receiver: Recipient or intended audience (could be the listener or you)
  3. Message: Contains information, ideas, opinions, thoughts, emotions
  4. Channel: Medium used to deliver the message (speaking, writing, letters, TV, radio)
  5. Feedback: Reactions or responses from the receiver (no response is also a response)

Communication Process

  • Encoding: Sender constructs the message in mind, writing, or media
  • Transmission: Message is sent to the receiver
  • Decoding: Receiver reads or listens and understands the message
  • Feedback: Receiver responds to the sender
  • Cycle: Process repeats creating a systematic communication process
  • Barriers: May block transmission and create misunderstandings

Purpose of Communication

  • Functions: Inform, clarify, promote, advise, teach, affirm, criticize, question, express, persuade, reveal, deny

Activities

  • Module Activity: Create a chart of daily communication transactions and analyze their results and functions.
