    2. Situation/event/occasion
    3. Person being addressed/spoken to

Types of Speech Context

  • Intrapersonal Communication: Communication within oneself

    • Examples:
      • Self-talk through a mirror
      • Writing in a diary
  • Interpersonal Communication: Communication between and among people, establishing personal relationships

    • Types:
      • Dyad Communication: Occurs between two people
        • Examples:
          • Teacher and mother during home visitation
          • Comforting a friend
      • Small Group Communication: Involves 3-12 people engaging in face-to-face interaction
        • Examples:
          • Teachers' meeting for National Reading Month
          • Group discussion among students
  • Public Communication: Delivering a message before or in front of a group

    • Examples:
      • Teacher explaining rules to students
      • Guest speaker at a graduation
  • Mass Communication: Communication through mass media like TV, radio, newspapers, etc.

    • Examples:
      • Reading a newspaper
      • Browsing internet for news
