  • Additional supplies like washcloths, sterile and clean gloves, PPE if needed
  • Alcohol prep for securing devices
  • Assistance from another person or nursing assistant
• Allergy Assessment:

  • Check for iodine allergy (cleaning solution)
• Patient Explanation and Consent:
  • Explain procedure details

Equipment and Hand Hygiene

Patient Positioning

• Position Options:
  • Dorsal recumbent: Patient lays back, legs flexed and apart
  • SIMS position: For patients with mobility issues
• Preparation:
  • Place waterproof pad under patient
  • Cover patient to ensure comfort

Foley Kit Preparation

• Open the kit and check contents
• Cleanse periurethral area using provided cleanser and towelettes
• Use three towelettes for peri care:
  • Labia minora furthest from and closest to you, and urethral meatus

Sterile Field Setup

• Opening Kit:
  • Proper technique to maintain sterile field
  • Use sterile gloves
• Drape Application:
  • Under pad for sterile field extension
  • Fenestrated drape over genital area

Foley Catheter Insertion

• Kit Setup:
  • Open iodine and apply to swabs
  • Connect water syringe to balloon port
  • Lubricate catheter tip
• Periurethral Cleaning:
  • Use betadine swabs for cleaning labia and urethral meatus
  • Hand hygiene after cleaning

Catheter Insertion

• Insertion Technique:
  • Spread labia with non-dominant hand
  • Insert catheter on exhalation
  • Advance 2-3 inches past urine return
  • Inflate balloon using water syringe
  • Gently tug to ensure proper placement

Post-Insertion Procedures

• Securement:
  • Secure catheter with stat lock device on inner thigh
  • Clean and prep skin area with alcohol and skin prep
  • Apply stat lock ensuring slack in catheter line

Ensure Proper Drainage

• Drainage Bag Positioning:
  • Below patient's bladder level, not on the floor
  • Ensure straight line without kinks
  • Use sheet clip for tubing management
• Sticker Placement: Label with date and initials
