Indwelling Foley Catheter Insertion on a Female Patient

Pre-Procedure Preparations

  • Doctor's Order: Verify a doctor's order for the procedure.
  • Confirm Details:
    • Right patient and procedure
    • Type of catheter ordered: indwelling vs. in-and-out
  • Supplies: Ensure you have all necessary supplies:
    • Foley catheter kit
    • Additional supplies like washcloths, sterile and clean gloves, PPE if needed
    • Alcohol prep for securing devices
    • Assistance from another person or nursing assistant
  • Allergy Assessment:
    • Check for latex allergy (catheter material)
    • Check for iodine allergy (cleaning solution)
  • Patient Explanation and Consent:
    • Explain procedure details
    • Answer patient questions
    • Obtain patient consent

Equipment and Hand Hygiene

Patient Positioning

  • Position Options:
    • Dorsal recumbent: Patient lays back, legs flexed and apart
