What is First Aid?

  • Definition: Immediate and temporary care given to an injured or ill person until professional medical help is available.
  • Purpose: Self-help and home care in absence of medical assistance.

Objectives of First Aid

  1. Alleviate Suffering: Reduce pain experienced by the victim.
  2. Prevent Further Injury: Avoid worsening the injury or condition.
  3. Prolong Life: Sustain the victim's life until further treatment is possible.

Common Injuries in Sports

  1. Sprain
    • Torn fibers in a ligament.
    • Symptoms: Swelling and bruising.
  2. Strain
    • Twist, pull, or tear of a muscle or tendon.
  3. Knee Injuries
    • Causes: Blow, twist, improper landing, excessive running.
  4. Fracture
    • Break in the bone; can be acute or stress-induced.
  5. Dislocation
    • Joint becomes separated.

First Aid for Common Injuries: RICE Method

  • Rest: Stop activity, rest for 24-48 hours to prevent further damage.
  • Ice: Apply ice pack for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours to reduce swelling.
  • Compression: Wrap the injured area, ensure it's snug but not too tight.
  • Elevation: Raise the injured area above heart level to reduce swelling.
