Evaluation of Shoulder Injury Immobilization

Welcome to emtprep.com. This is the joint immobilization skill. Welcome to the Joint Familiarization Practical Assessment. Here we will evaluate your ability to properly immobilize a shoulder injury.

Your patient's injury has been discovered during the secondary survey. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with all of the equipment before you. You respond to a playground for a 28-year-old female who fell onto her shoulder. Her vitals are within normal limits and she is just how you find her.

Do you have any questions? No. BSI, is my scene safe?

Your scene is safe. So the first thing I'm going to do is instruct the patient to hold her arm in a position of comfort. So ma'am, I want you to go ahead and grab a hold of your arm there and just hold that in a comfortable position. Now I'm going to assess... I have a pulse.

Can you feel me touching your finger here? Can you wiggle your fingers for me? All right. Motor, sensory, and circulatory functions are present and normal.

All right. So the next thing I'll do is select the appropriate splinting material and... stabilize the arm.

So for the shoulder I'm going to use a sling to immobilize the bone below the extremity putting a knot in the back of the sling or the back of the triangle bandage. Excuse me. So very gently I'm going to feed this up through your arm.

Get it in the appropriate position. I'm going to come underneath this arm now. Spread the sling out, making sure we support the entire arm.

And then to fully mobilize, I'm also going to use a swath to secure the arm to the body. So I'll have you pull that out of there and just continue to brace that and we'll secure the arm to the torso with the swath. Once that is done, I will reassess CMS. Checking for pulse. I have a pulse.

Can you wiggle your fingers for me? And can you feel me touching you? Motor, sensory, and circulatory functions are present and normal.

All right. Is there anything else you'd like to do? Nope. Okay, thank you.
