welcome everyone this is the final webinar for APD 5017 and I think it's only natural now that we come full circle to talk about emotional well-being and where we're going in education with social media because social media is not something that is going away it will change it will evolve but it is not going to leave our technological repertoire definitely for the foreseeable future and so understanding how we can integrate understanding how we can help manage and help manage the emotional side of social media is really important when it comes to this discussion in education so we're looking about well-being and thinking about it what we want to really do is unpack this tension between our life experiences in our physical day to day world and our online life and what we've constructed this is a nice way to sort of round out all the ideas that everyone shared and their selfies that they took last week and all of you have done some really interesting thinking about what role social media plays and really what even qualifies as social media and so we have this idea of replicating our human interaction that we engage with face-to-face in this virtual world where the interaction is not always apparent but because you're thinking you're interacting with digital objects but then those are tied to those other individuals who have shared those ideas who have posted those videos who have done various things to put that media out there and so really when we're talking about well-being we we want to focus on this idea of communication because it's communicating how and what impact this is having on the individuals that are producing and consuming the type of media so we we need to think about that and and what this type of communication looks like I thought the video that altar had posted about how we use our screen time and where our attention is directed is really important because how we spend our days and how we are in our physical lives we're tied to this device we're tied to our smartphones some of us cannot abandon our devices others it's very easy to do so and to sort of disconnect but this idea about personal time and what makes us each unique I think is a really really interesting jumping-off point to take into our thinking about education and so what happens in that small box he's that analogy this small box of time what happens in there that makes you you and it's interesting even to pull this back out into even genetics it's our variation our genetic variation in our DNA is a fraction of a percent different from other species even and we see that and that's what makes us unique so this isn't the idea of a small box isn't something that is only relevant here when we're talking about technology and devices is this something that makes us unique this really tiny fraction of what we're talking about from other things in the world so it's interesting to put that into perspective that way as well and then this idea as of the phone as a camera and then taking pictures engaging with your environment capturing that and really being able to what consider multitasking they're just multitasking cameras are smartphones and then there's this debate and people say it you hear a lot of teenagers well show me a picture it didn't happen and you hear this in our day to day lives and our interactions with people I have young cousins and we have these discussions and I talked to them about you know what they're doing on social media and it's interesting to see the types of conversations back-channeling that's going on from there in like their face-to-face interactions their back-channeling as they're interacting as well online and I'm sure you have all experiences at some point I may be not noticed it you can be with two or three people and you're all on your phones and maybe one of the two that you're with sends you a text message and then you start laughing and then you're saying oh why are you laughing oh this person beside me just sent me a photo or whatever meet maybe that triggered that so we have these really intimate connections with our devices and understanding how we do use them and where we draw our uniqueness from but then how we're interacting with these devices and each other is really really fascinating and it's a very intricate web one of the really big ideas as well coming out of the final week and I think that is relevant throughout all of the topics that we've explored is this idea of attention knowing how we pay attention to things how that is changing how this is evolving and really should evolve a little bit faster in terms of Education it's it's important because what we have to be able to understand is that now that we have this foundation in developmental psychology and in understanding how we design technologies then we can begin to shift our thinking about how we learn and about not only how we learn but how we learn with technology and what dramatic impact this can have on us it's still fascinating to me that we have tech books books are fantastic I love books I love having hard copies of things that's just my personal preference and I would love sitting down in reading books but I also enjoy getting that same type of content in other forms I am a visual learner so I am able to break down words into some sort of visualization and I enjoyed that better than just reading words I also like listening to podcasts as you can tell they were and videos they're integrated into the syllabus there's other ways to get our information today and so this is a really important thing for learning and for education and for understanding where we should put our focus and our energies in terms of building content attention is also this abstract way to think about how we use personal time because they're where we focus our own attention is what ties back to this idea of what makes us unique so I think it's really important to be able to understand as an individual where do you put your attention where do you focus your time when you are able and have that free time to do things then this idea about attention also takes us to this whole stream of research and developmental psych that really does allow us to change how we are designing technologies and how we interact with technology but what's really important is this idea about being able to construct and connect over social media and through these types of technologies that allow us to do it so we have two big ideas social constructivism and connectivism that capture this idea of being able to build things and build new experiences and learn from them through the use of technologies like social media and it changes the way we're thinking about learning because now there's this line that's blurred between formal learning and informal learning it's not just something that has happens in the classroom and in the four walls of a school it is happening in our day-to-day lives moving in and out weaving through whatever stories we are creating for our learners and how they're working through their life from the moment they wake up to the moment they go to sleep and understanding then that the learner and where this knowledge is coming from is being challenged because we are able to draw from all aspects of our lives and to bring that into that learning experience so this these two theories of because social constructivism and connectivism are important and then tying back to this idea of agency and knowledge of that individual of that learner it's really powerful because then what we can do is we can rethink education as something that's no longer siloed we no longer will have separate subject matters we have to learn mathematics in and along with art or inter along with English in history and and doing all of these types of activities and thinking where we're recognizing that everything that we're learning is actually deeply interconnected but in our attempt to create an education system where we can help build knowledge whereas now that idea of the system to build knowledge has changed because information is at our fingertips so that idea of knowledge and accessing knowledge at the time that you need that knowledge is important because that's now shifting to this skills-based development and understanding really how you learn so that you can become a lifelong learner and then from there you are equipped with the skills that you need to be able to maximize your learning in whatever areas of interest they are and so I come to these like final set of questions in our thinking this week that I just want you to take a moment to reflect on each of them so what do we value most in education what has it been in the research and looking at the evolution of the system of education over the last hundred years it's been about providing knowledge to people it has shifted into the development of skills and development of 21st century thinking skills understanding that creativity is very important for learning and very important for lifelong learning thinking about how this is evolved and where this is going to go so what are we going to value most in education in ten years from now what are we going to value in society 10 15 20 years from now it will all change it's changed so rapidly our lives today are different from our lives 20 years ago and you see all these memes you see these different types of media posted about what life was like back in the 90s what life was like back in the 80s 70s and it was very different but five years ago life was very different ten years ago life is very different ten years ago Facebook was just sort of getting off the ground and becoming part of mainstream dialog Facebook initially in 2003 I was just for university students and you had to have a university email account to access it so how has this all changed and then moving to this next question is how do our attitudes towards socialization to play a role in the adoption of social media and learning so how do we think we should be interacting how are we interacting and what are the benefits are the affordances of these types of interactions and then how can we bring that into our learning environment there's a ton of research on back-channeling and that is just one sort of element of social media interaction and socialization that we can bring into learning but this whole idea of just eliminating the the distinction between formal and informal learning learning is happening all the time and can be because we all have these devices so what does that mean for our attitudes toward interaction and then the big takeaway is now being at the end of this course what role after you've done this thinking with your group unpacked the big ideas to one on your biases and then reshape them and thought about how we can integrate social media play and tack into learning what will technology play in social media have in your lives after the course how is it changed and hopefully it's changed for the better and you are also able to distinguish between understanding that there are both negative and positive aspects to integrating tech play and social media into learning but when integrated in ways that are constructive and that supports skill development for particular things maybe there's more potential than we think and that more than that we've tapped into thank you so much
