Opioid Medication Counseling and Safety

Introduction

  • Every opioid or narcotic pain medication dispensed includes a Massachusetts Department of Public Health handout.
    • Covers:
      • Information about pain medication.
      • Risks of abuse and addiction.
      • Proper disposal.
      • Importance of having a nasal naloxone kit.
      • Overdose risks, including for new users.

Major Side Effects and Management

Constipation

  • Common with almost every opioid prescription.
  • Often dispensed with medications to prevent constipation:
    • Stool Softener: Colace (Docusate).
    • Laxative: Senna.
  • Recommended to take these bowel regimen medications alongside opioid medications.

Drowsiness

  • Significant risk when taking opioids.
  • Dangerous when combined with other sedatives or alcohol:
    • Avoid Benzodiazepines (e.g., Lorazepam, Ativan, Xanax).
  • Recommendations:
    • Avoid driving.
    • Avoid operating heavy machinery.
    • Stay home and rest while on medication.

Counseling Points

  • Emphasis on the potential for overdose, even for new users.
  • Detailed education on side effects and preventive measures.
  • Strong advice against activities requiring full alertness.
