Comparing Four Compact Cars

[Music] hey guys welcome back to the Piston show we struck the lottery today because the weather looks like we are in good old England but we are somewhere in the fringes of Damansara bringing you one of the most exciting comparison videos that we have worked on now we have heard and read some of your comments and previously when we did the Honda City versus Toyota Vios video well a lot of you criticized our decision and actually called me a Honda salesman the thing about putting our videos out is that we are sort of immune to a lot of the comments already but some of the comments were actually quite good and hence why we landed here today on my right we have the proton S70 we have the Nissan ala we have the Honda City as well as the Toyota Vios I know what you're thinking why the proton S70 it is a C- segment car so proton says however the spec sheeet and the price list says something else because at just about 95,000 ring it is in the same price category as the rest of these cars so it's either proton wanted to make life difficult for the rest of the B segment cars or they just wanted to create a very affordable B segment car which is what we are going to try to answer today on my left we have the very gorgeous Nissan ala now this is priced somewhere about 95,00 Ring however the model that you're seeing here behind me actually comes with a complete body kit called the Kuro body kit now the body kit alone such as the front lid the blacked out rims the back bumper and such will set you back about 8,000 ring if you want the spoiler you need to add a further 1,400 ring which we can just round it up to about 10,000 9,400 ring to be precise that so 95888 jacked up by a further 9,400 ring I'll let you do the math and then we have the extremely popular Honda City 99,900 ring get this is the RS variant and extremely popular despite its price nearly 100K but Honda Malaysia keeps selling thousands of these and then we have the latest generation Toyota vs now you really can't go wrong with the Toyota can you Toyota the Toyota Vios over the years have proven to be the one of the most reliable V segment cars you simply can't go wrong with the new new vs however I've driven the vs quite extensively and I find that it is perhaps not as good as its predecessors so in this video our objective is to help you make an informed purchase decision give you the good the bad and the driving impressions of all these four cars and ultimately help you decide which one you should spend your money on but as usual a quick word from our sponsor it'll just take a minute and it helps us pay our bills so stay with us this video is brought to you by bajaya Soo Insurance get Soo Moto safe by bajaya Soo the less you drive the less you pay it's that simple choose from confession to make that before we picked up the Ala for this video I had never driven the Ala so trust me when I say that I was pleasantly surprised I mean we see a lot of these running around the roads but I've never had the chance to actually drive one uh despite you know being in the industry for so long however this is not a regular ala this is the newer ones they call this the Black Edition however it comes with this Glacier gray color in my opinion it looks really good there's no I don't think that you know usually this this color is reserved for the likes you know Porche calls it n Gray if I'm not mistaken and uh it's a very motor sports or performance oriented color but speaking of performance the Black Edition also comes with black out kits the black out bumper as I've said earlier the the rare spoiler the rare bumper and those black out wheels on the side as well I'm a little bit confused because tanong Moto calls it the Black Edition and then after that over here you'll see a to uh branding on top of that they also have something called Kuro body kit so whether it's Black Edition or whether it's Kuro or whether it's Tomy I'll let you decide however I can just tell you that if you want the body kit it'll cost you a further 8,000 ring but that does not include the back spoiler from the side here still I think it's a very very good looking car you also get this carbon fiber handguards over here that basically ensure that the door handles don't scratch up from all your nails besides that at the back here again same old same old in terms of design but this comes with the rare spoiler which cost a further 1,400 ring this is the bumper that I was telling you about and generally it's a very good look car in terms of dimension it's not that big the Honda City is wider the proton S70 is bigger it sort of shares a little bit of its uh similarities in terms of Dimensions with the Toyota Vos but from the inside it's significantly more comfortable and bigger than the vs let's jump inside before that check out the boot in terms of boot space surprisingly the ala has has 482 L of boot space my laptop bag over here for reference sake at 482 L it is second largest in this 4 car lineup U only the proton S70 has a bigger boot this is actually quite decent and interestingly I think you can fold the seats flat for even more storage space so that's a 6040 seat over there they they don't fold exactly flat down but yeah it's big enough and uh good enough to actually you know for a family or getting away for weekend or general use the Nissan ala so far has proven to be quite impressive now we go inside and just like the outside the interior too is a nice place to be it's a good looking interior quality feels really good this is of course a locally assembled model by tanong motos and I have to just re tell you again that I was pleasantly surprised when I picked up the car the steering wheel feels just nice in your hands the stitching feels very premium you get Apple carplay Android auto of course a single zone air conditioning and a a USB port One USB Port over there another USB port over here Everything feels very nice it just feels very premium um the other thing is if you check out the seats this they have this sort of creamish uh double contrast leather seats over here but if you can see over time they tend to fade they tend to become wrinkled again and uh which depending on what you like it add it adds to the character of the Interior or after some time it just means that you'll have to get this part cleaned up besides that the interior I have no complaints again as I said you get apple carplay you get a part analog part digital meter panel over there is just everything that you need is just within easy reach more importantly quality feels really nice in here I mean look at this so soft touch everything so if you can't really tell can't already tell I actually really like the Nissan omera now let's go jump the back seat so to help us gauge the spaciousness of the back seats I figured what better way than to put two big guys in the back seat Well if you're small you can practically fit everywhere but if you're a little bit on the wider side then I guess that's the best way to tell the spaciousness of the interior of the car so to help me gauge the spaciousness of the Interior I have a friend called Tiny Tim who's going to help me with this tiny he bro so I'm Tiny Tim so Tiny Tim here is going to help me uh sit in the back and figure out whether it's spacious or not all right let's do it let's do this what do you think it's actually not bad yeah but but this is your driving that's my driving position position yeah so both of us are roughly about the same height but look at the the head room so I have no hair so head room is not that bad here is a bunch of hair and uh but but he hitting my head though hitting your head already so the thing that you need to realize about Nissan's are the back seats are always just slightly elevated than the front seat because Nissan says this is actually for to help the back passengers look in front you know to see what they you know what's going on at the front seat and such so even the xtrail has this feature where the back seat is just slightly elevated uh as compared to the front this of course as Tim pointed out sacrifices on Headroom but in terms of width yeah if you're as wide as us then I don't think you're going to get any body white is fine but you can't definitely can't fit a third person here yeah you can't fit a third person here and uh the other thing that I think needs to be pointed out is there's no air conditioning vents at the back here and you only get a single USB port so if you have two kids that you're going to be carrying in here then they will be fighting over charging their devices but in terms of spaciousness let's see if you have this of course you got cup holders but still in terms of width not that great in terms of hit space I mean if you're taller than me yeah or if someone's way taller than both of us then they're going to have Beau but I I also think that we are slightly taller than the average Malaysian height as well so yeah if your average size then you should be fine if you're every size definitely you should be fine yep so let's go check out the rest so let's talk a little bit about the powertrain of the Ala a 1 L 3-cylinder turbocharged engine sending power to the front wheels via a conventional CVT gearbox now we Malaysians love turbocharged engines we always think turbo means power but with 100 100 PS and 152 n m of torque it's actually the least powerful in our lineup so not very powerful a smaller engine uh three cylinders of course it however I have to give them credit because it doesn't have the rattle tattle of the proton S70 which I'll talk about later however even though Nissan says that this car has been designed for efficiency but with an official fuel consumption figure of 5.4 L per 100 km it is also The Thirst steers in this lineup and with a fuel tank that measures in at just 35 L yeah you're not going to go very far with the Nissan ala before you need a refill so nice engine no doubt but not very powerful and it won't go very far either now before we set off to drive the Ala let's talk a little bit about the safety systems that are available in the Ala now keep in mind the ala has been in the market for a while already much longer than when certain safety systems were introduced so does the Ala actually keep up in terms of safety well from what I'm reading of course it does it still comes with six airbags which is pretty much the same amount as compared to the its competitors in the same segment as well but not only that it has other other safety systems such as uh forward Collision warning forward emergency braking blind spot monitoring system system which is a must these days rare cross traffic aler uh 360 cameras uh then these cameras also highlight whatever Mo moving objects there are within its range um besides it doesn't of course it doesn't have a lot of Safety Systems like uh some of its competitors do such as forward uh like front car uh notification system like I think it is the Honda that has the system where the front front lead car departure notification system that is what I was searching for anyway so how does the Ala Drive um been driving it around for a couple of days already and I just got to say this that just as I was pleasantly surprised when I first got into this car I was pleasantly surprised when I started driving this car as well now it may not be very powerful because 100 PS is just roughly about 97 horsepowers um but keep in mind that because it has a smaller fuel tank so the car is not very heavy which means that there's despite the powertrain being so small it doesn't have a lot of Mass to actually pull front wheeel drive so pull rear wheel drive so push so besides that um you also get get mcferson struts up front together with a tortion beam suspension set up at the back I just have to say that the suspension though it just tends to roll over bumps rather than absorb them so that is one thing that I wish could be better about the AL because it does sort of affect the Comfort levels like check this out I can feel that I can feel that on my bum I can feel that everywhere so it should the suspension should absorb it you know but what that ultimately results in a stiffer suspension actually means lower lesser body rooll like like this what is that so in that sense I think the suspension of the Ala could be a little bit more comfortable but that it's not necessarily a bad thing because as soon as you start you know getting into Corners you realize that hey this car doesn't roll around all that much so in terms of handling when the roads get interesting I think the Ala is quite exciting so in terms of power as I've said it's not very fast it's not going anywhere very quickly either it makes a lot of fancy noises but that is not the engine that is the CVT transmission and in typical CVT transmission fashion it's very noisy so yeah it still makes a lot of fancy sounds but what is really impressive though is the refinement levels in here because despite me being at some high speeds let's be polite about it you still don't hear a lot of wind noise around the C pillars B pillars and such um so you sorry a pillars I think I forgot my technical details so and I really like that because that just adds that just means that as a family car the Ala is not bad at all I just wish that the suspension was a little bit softer now I got a fast rander coming over here and um at some higher some speed speeds I won't mention the car feels planted as compar as compared to some of its competitors which will throw your head around because of how soft the suspension is this the body roll on this car it's quite impressive so even though the suspension may not be very comfortable but if you like if you're the type that you know takes Corners faster than you should and I think you'll find this to be quite fun there's one thing that I wish that the Ala had though and that is an electronic parking brake because with the current manual parking brake that actually sacrifices on a very important feature in my books and that is the brake hold or Auto hold so that is a bit of a bummer and this shows the age of the Ala but besides that I like this car it's old but it's still relevant well done Tano well done the other thing that I must point out though is that despite everything that the Ala offers I think the nvh levels of this car is quite impressive I mean the there's hardly anything about the world outside that I'm hearing inside here despite doing slightly above your usual highway speeds the suspension as I've already said could be better but it's good enough the nvh levels though are really good that is surprising because even at some highway speeds there's hardly anything about the world outside that comes back into here hey guys what are some of the things that you consider when choosing a petrol bread for me I make sure that the petrol can keep my engine clean and also give me better mileage I'm sure everybody thinks about this when choosing a particular brand with VH petrols Infiniti RW 954m you get precisely that it has special German additives that reduces the amount of deposits that build up in your engine over the long term keeping it clean it also has improved friction modifiers that reduce is the amount of friction that your engine has to go through ultimately giving you better mileage and making BH petrols Infinity round 95 un4 and the right [Music] choice and now let's talk a little bit about the Toyota Vios now I've read your comments from our previous videos and a lot of you love the Vios now I'm a big fan of Toyota I have no doubt about the company and I like a lot of their products I just don't like the vs that much especially not in this current uh version I like the previous generation models they were really nice nice to drive comfortable spacious and such even the the designs of the cars were really good this though just does not do it for me I don't like the angles I don't like the edginess of the overall car now it might you know maybe I'm aging but I just don't like the designs like such as this protruding thing over here this is supposed to be an airm or something but yeah I the design it's all right it's also the shortest car in this lineup interestingly and uh it runs on 17in wheels if just for a recap the Ala runs on 16in wheels so this runs on bigger Wheels it is also one of the tallest cars in this lineup so does that translate to more uh Headroom inside we'll answer that shortly now I said that the front I didn't like the design I really don't mind the back though this it's a very handsome uh rare design of the car like the LED lights and of course they come in two variants only so this is the top of topof the line G variant if you're wondering what this thing is is over there at the front is supposed to help air into the uh into the uh the engine bay of the car help with cooling help with the brakes Cooling and such this is also it plays a part in the sense that it reduces the amount of wind noise that goes back into the cabin resulting in a quieter interior so it's not it's just not there just for show it's there for a reason the back looks really smart no doubt about it design as I always say my friends is subjective the vs yeah just doesn't do it now let's check out the the boot space so the boot space measures in at 475 L which means it's the third largest in this lineup smaller than the Ala and definitely smaller than the one in the proton S70 it also comes with this boot liner uh I think this is an optional accessory I have to check but I just I'm not a fan of of these things because when you're driving it because it's so slippery it's just things start to you know move around and this emergency kit comes with a velcro patch over here so they're meant to you know sort of just stick there but uh if you choose this of course it's easier to roll stuff in and such and if something leaks you know you buy eggs and if they break this is definitely going to be easier to clean than caret right so there's pros and to this but in terms of boot space it's big enough for a um for your entire family actually but do the seats full let's check bad news guys 470 L is all you have to all you get with the Toyota vs the seats don't fall flat so that means this is all you get I go check out the back the interior space so the interior of the Vos is among the newest over here of course the proton S70 is newer but uh this generally feels like a very nice interior the quality is typical Toyota Everything feels good I just don't like the fact that a lot of these switches and buttons the steering wheel are shared with peras so all these things over here all these buttons and such you'll find find it in a much cheaper perua as well I don't like that I know it's normal to share Parts these days especially between manufacturers that are within the same company I don't like it I if I'm going to be spending double the money I want something more exclusive this even though quality is good even though there's nothing that I can complain about there's nothing that is out of place even the Met panel guys is shared with perua as well now I can once you see it you're never going to be able to unsee it I also like the fact that you get this big screen over here you get Apple carplay Android auto you get the works right uh sound system is good quality is great now in my earlier reviews of the Vos I said that because the center panel is so high up it sort of just forces you to sit like this you can't get more comfortable you can only get you can only go forwards and backwards and upwards and downwards that's it your need space though this is all you're going to get I think after some some time you might be able to deal with it but the other cars feel more spacious from the inside overall nice interior my V way my v i don't like that this feels bigger than Thea so this is definitely more spacious than the Ala uh you also get your own air conditioning vents two air conditioning vents at the bottom here and how many USB ports just one us two USB ports one type a one type c am I seeing that right yep so and interestingly you also get cup holders at the side over here the Ala also gets that what no armrest no armrest head space way more than the the AL right Al yeah it's generally a more spacious place to be in than as compared to the Ala we are sitting more comfortably as well and that's my preferred sitting position I mean it's fine just the knees are touching a bit but yeah it's fine right so even though the length of the car is I think the shortest in this group but interior space seems quite generous especially for Backseat passengers I wish that the air conditioning vents were not at the bottom over here because this just tends to cool your knees rather than to your face I think the ideal position for air conditioning vents are on the sides I did ask a manufacturer once why don't more people more manufacturers put their air conditioning vents at the side over here the reasoning being that this panel this B panel over here B pillar will have to be thicker so that increases manufacturing cost uh you'll have to redo your structural Integrity your crash test and such so that's why a lot of manufactur prefer to put it down here because they can just pull the piping from the dashboard and put it over here so much easier overall nice place to be yeah right comfortable y approved let's go so in terms of Powertrain the vs is powered by 1.5 L 4- cylinder engine with dual vvti uh technology producing 106 PS and 138 n m of torque power is sent to the front wheels via a conventional 7-speed uh CVT transmission it's not the it's not the most efficient in this in this uh shootout and neither is it the most powerful the V sorry the ala has more talk slightly more talk but it's down on horsepower the Vos has is down on torque but it's up on horsepower but with 5.2 L per 100 kilm official fuel consumption rating from Toyota it's actually the second most efficient in this shootout so not very powerful not very efficient either it's just nice just like how Toyotas usually are the Toyota Vos is actually quite impressive in fact it almost leads this comparison video now of course as I've already said uh all fall cars get six airbags but in terms of Safety Systems other systems the vs gets stuff like that other cars don't get such as pedal Mis operation control what this means is that if you had accidentally stepped on the accelerator pedal the car simply will not respond if you've seen some videos where uh a car has accidentally gone into a shopping into a shop lot or hit somebody or you know all of these types of videos usually that means that the driver has accidentally stepped on the accelerator pedal so with PMC pedal misoperation control the car will essentially avoid that from happening now you also get stuff like blind spot monitoring which which the Honda City does not get uh you get rare cross traffic alert and interestingly you also get a dash cam then you get emergency stop signal uh which means that if you are in an emergency situation and you had jammed on the brakes the hazard lights will come on automatically and then you get a brake assist vehicle stability control system uh which a lot of the other cars get as well a pre-collision system Lane departure warning Lane departure prevention Lane keep assist uh which the other cars get as well adaptive cruise control without stop and go function uh you also do not get lead car departure notification system which the Honda City gets the rest though is pretty much same old same old you also get sh shifter pedals which time limit press breake to keep brake hold okay I need to get the car going anyway you also get shifter pedals which the Honda City also offers in fact the Honda City and the Vos are the only two cars with shifter pedals for additional driving fun now now talking about driving fun how does the vs Drive let's go find out the suspension of the vs is the same as the rest mcferson struts up front and a tsion beam at the back uh it's slightly on the stiffer side I would say the Honda City definitely feels better softer more compliant and it absorbs all the roads bumps and such better than the one here in the vs in fact the proton S70 feels better as well um but in terms of trans Mission the views gets a sspeed CVT gearbox so the one in the Honda City feels quite noisy and drony because it's just one long continuous transmission with no steps no gear shifts in between but in the vs listen to this put my foot down of course there's a lot of noise as well but you get that sound of it changing gears and that's just a little bit of you know a break away from that long droney sound which is typical of CVT gearboxes the suspension well as I said it's not as soft as the one on the Honda City and neither does it feel as compliant in in fact I think the Honda City is probably a little bit more comfortable in terms of driving Dynamics this just feels like it's hopping and skipping everywhere on the road it's com comfortable no doubt if you if all the other cars were not here I would say that it's not a bad car in fact it is not a bad car it's just not as good as the city I've not driven the vios yet I mean in during this test so I wanted to drive the S70 first then the city and then now the vs and finally the Ala but by itself the vios it's not bad I mean it does make a lot of droney sounds and you know the suspension does feel not as comfortable but I have to say that the steering wheel of the vs definitely feels chattier like it's telling you a lot more things about what's going on at Ground Zero with the tires as compared to the one in the Honda City the Honda City the steering feel of the city was just dead this feels like it's just throwing thousands and thousands of small pockets of information back to your pal arms so that I appreciate the other thing is the steering feel of the vs it feels heavier than the one in the city the city just feels light you know it's [Music] just it sometimes it feels like uh it's just way too light especially at higher speed but not here in the views it actually feels good like this fast right-hander yeah I feel I feel a little bit more confident at higher speed in the vs than I do in the Honda City and that's saying something about the driving dynamics of the Vos just going through the smart Tech Lane yes I'm still haven't come to turn with RFID it just makes more sense when we are doing comparison videos like this cuz I can just carry my smart protect from one car to the other anyway just very loud droney sounds of oh man crab drivers crab Riders so yeah I like the I like the handling of the vs I think the city is more comfortable but the vs and you're driving it at higher speed now Conn exit I just feel a little bit more confident in the vs than I did in the city but as I said earlier during when I was driving the city you don't buy these cars to drive in Anger you don't buy these cars for performance you don't buy these cars for the you know how informative the the steering wheel Fields you buy these cars for the convenience that they offer but in the event that you're in a hurry and in need to drive fast I think I would like to do that I would like a car that had the power of the city and the driving and handling dynamics of the vs that's what I would like [Music] and now the icon of the middle class the Honda City RS now this is not cheap a 99,900 ring it's definitely quite a bit of coin it's also one of the oldest models over here of course it has gone through its facelift it has gone through a bunch of product updates which actually quite makes it very a very nice car it is despite its age it's still a very nice car to look at the interior is among my favorites but a all new Honda City shouldn't be too far away I don't want to speculate I just know that it's not too far away um from the side it runs on 16in wheels where else the vs as as I've said earlier runs on 17 the Ala runs on 16 as well the design well this is a very safe design and because we see thousands and thousands of them on our road almost on a daily basis whether in sedan form or hatchback form we have come to actually become familiar with the design of the Honda City we just I can't say that it's very good-look and I can't say that it's ugly it's just one of those cars that you look at and you know that it is a good car that is the status of the Honda City even from the back as I said it comes with RS form so you get all this uh spoilers and such and those fake double diffusers I'm not sure what to make of them but as I said they're fake now the boot space ironically despite its size and such the Honda city has the smallest boot space of them all 410 L of boot space which is actually okay you know but when you compare it to the rest it's the smallest of them all but uh for your daily needs for your weekend getaways for your road trips is still decent enough now I actually shot a video where I put in a all my son's things his bicycle uh bags for weekends getaway to EO and it was sufficient now despite the fact that it has the smallest boot space it has foldable seats which sadly is something that the vs does not have in my opinion folding foldable seats are very important now how do I get this out so boot space may not be that big but at least it comes with foldable seats so in case you know you need more space having this feature always add a level of convenience to any car I'm sure anybody can appreciate that let's go [Music] inside now as soon as you step into the Honda City you'll notice that it generally feels quite nice especially when you compare it against the Toyota Vios as well as the Nissan alira the Nissan ala has a in terms of quality it feels very good so does the Vos I think if you've never stepped into a myv or an Axia before uh the vs the interior of the vs will seem quite nice as well but just not as nice as the interior of the Honda City this is of course the RS variant so you get all these red highlights this red stitching a huge infotainment screen Apple carplay Android auto The Works multiple USB ports there's two up here alone exhaust uh auxiliary power outlet uh you part analog part digital meter panel which is it seems to be the theme among B segment cars these days generally it just feels like a very nice interior and as I've said before during in the vs I like Center panels that are not very high because it lets you just sort of you know your knee space is more comfortable for your knees especially if you are bit a little bit on the taller side I really like the sound system in this car as well I think it's definitely better than the one in the vs as well as in the Ala everything Fields Top Notch and you also get this black roof so it just adds a level of premiumness Battlefield expensive because at nearly 100,000 ring that's a lot of money significantly maybe 5,000 ring more expensive than some of the other competitors but generally it's just a very nice place to be in now we call Tiny Tim oh this is way more spacious this is so much nicer okay definitely much more nicer than the vs much better than the Ala it's just generally a nicer place to be in no doubt so much l room yeah I mean of course that seat is W up front but judging from you you and me are roughly about the same height of course you get T in USB ports your own air conditioning vents T in air conditioning Vents and a handrest as well the viewers didn't have this and just a much nicer place to be and what I really like is that you get tint you get tinting right out of the factory right so and it's quite dark as well so saves you a lot of money wow not bad even the is a lot yeah H is good as well so that's what the Honda City gives you it gives you a level of practicality that the other cars either sacrifice on or sort of just have to uh make up make do with a smaller interior of course as compared to the vs the Ala is slightly more spacious but this just feels very nice I love the black roof lining and this one the rear conditioning V are a bit higher they are more angled towards you so it doesn't really hit your knees that much correct your face good point actually the air conditioning vents are a bit longer as well so it seems like you get more the one in the vi was flat like Ang yeah so good point so that one actually blow Clow more uh cool air to your face rather than to your knee I like y so in terms of Powertrain the Honda City is nearly identical to the one in the Toyota vs a 1.5 L 4 cylinder engine the vs uses dual vvti the city uses ivtec power is rated at 121 PS and 145 Newton M of torque making this the most powerful four cylinder engine is more powerful than the Ala it's more powerful than the Vos I'm not going to get to the S70 as yet I'll do that shortly in terms of fuel efficiency 5.6 L per 100 km now this is a tried and tested engine it's been in the market for quite a while already and we find it to be a good balance of power as well as efficiency the Honda City is always a car that I've enjoyed driving in fact I've always enjoyed just being inside here it's a very nice interior it feels high quality it has everything that I've wanted in a car the one thing that it does not have and one thing that annoys the hell out of me with the Honda City is the fact that it does not have blind spot monitoring and Honda Malaysia keeps trudging on with the lane watch assist which if only works when I turn on when I give my left indicator if you're giving your right indicator you uh basically on your own which is counterproductive and then if it's raining which it which happens a lot in Malaysia all the best to you because even two bikes that are riding side by side may look like a car and a car that has only one light working may look like a bike because the resolution of the camera is not very good besides all of that it also comes with an an almost complete adust Suite uh in fact the latest generation honda cities have an updated Honda sensing Suite that now comes with a lows speeed follow function and Lead car departure notification system which if you spend a lot of time on your phone when you're stuck in traffic or when you're waiting for the lights to turn green I think you will you will appreciate the lead Le car departure notification system it just basically beats to tell you that the car in front has started moving so that actually helps you to stay aware of your traffic situation and avoid people horning honking at you from the back besides all of that you also get stuff like uh forward Collision warning Collision mitigation system uh break Collision mitigation braking system basically autonomous emergency braking Lane keep assist uh Road departure mitigation Lane departure warning adaptive cruise controller and automatic high beam it has the works and uh interestingly all six cars what am I talking about all four cars come with six airbags so in terms of Safety Systems you're basically covered in all four cars so really no real concern over there so how do how do the cars feel like to drive how does a Honda City feel like to drive I'm about to go find out now besides the fact that all four cars have similar Safety Systems as well as uh six airbags all four cars also have the same suspension setup a mcferson strut mcferson struts up front and tsion beams at the back but the Honda City the Toyota Vios and the Nissan ala also share one thing in common a CVT gearbox and if you can hear this that drone of that CVT oh my God I never likeed CBT gearboxes still don't I never will because the sound of those things they sound like they're being tortured just to get you moving and that's something that I never really liked whether it's in the Honda City whether it's in the vios and I've never driven the Ala before but it has that common trait as well and that's one thing that the proton S70 does really well because it has a dual clutch transmission so it sounds better because well you don't really hear much of the world outside and which ultimately means that refinement levels inside the car are better now if I put my foot down there's a lot of screaming coming going on from the transmission which of course if the proton S70 was not here I wouldn't quite mind but the S smt is here so yeah the smt just has better nvh levels thanks to the fact that it has a dual clutch transmission but how does the Honda City feel like to drive well as a car the Honda City has always felt very nice the suspension has always been a little bit on the softish side which means that if I carry some speeds right now and let me just get up to some very legal speeds and I take this fast left-hander there's going to be some very noticeable body roll and you just sort of just roll over the bumps and inundation on the road which again is typical of the Honda City but that is not a bad thing because it's actually a very comfortable car to drive and besides that nvh levels I really don't mind it the steering wheel is a little bit on the muted side it doesn't like I can drive it with two fingers no doubt about it but it's what that means is is that quite it's quite light but in terms of feel you don't feel anything you just get some tiny tingling Sensations coming back from the steering wheel but besides that nothing but that's not why you buy a Honda City you don't buy a Honda City because it gives you tremendous a lot of information from the steering wheel you can Chuck it into corners and it's so communicative you don't buy a Honda City for stuff like that you buy a Honda City for comfort for convenience for practicality for safety and for the features that it has to offer I'm just getting up to speed from 40 going on to maybe 80 this is what the Honda City does really well on a day-to-day basis you know going to office going to school uh just doing your thing on a daytoday level the Honda City does it brilliantly I think when it comes to comfort convenience practicality safety and onboard features it's hard to beat the Honda City this is something that the Honda City has always done well [Music] and now we come to the Dark Horse of this video the proton S70 a b segment or a c segment Contender well we we believe proton when they say it's a C- segment car but with the pricing suggests as I've said earlier during the start of this video the pricing suggests that it might be a b segment Contender so right now we're trying to assertain that whether it's an extremely good B segment car or a not so good C- segment car to answer the letter I think we will have to compare it to the Honda Civic as well as the Toyota Corolla alus that is something that we might might try to do in the later video if that's something that You' be interested to see then let us know in the comment section below and we'll try to put that together for you anyway the proton S70 is undoubtedly a good looking car that has no bad angle to it uh of course proton has localized it a little bit uh this is the Jil I think the boou or something if I'm not mistaken I could be wrong but I know it's based on a Jil of course proton has given it new bumpers a refresh Grill and such it's something that proton always does now from the side you get 17in wheels which is something that even the Vos has and the side profile is actually quite nice it's actually it has one of the lowest roof line if if I'm not mistaken it has the lowest roof line among all four cars does that mean that it has uh lesser head space that's something Tiny Tim and I will answer in in a bit and uh from the back now it's important to know that led lights are a common theme among all these four cars the back here well I really like these lights now let me just get the let me just get the car keys because believe that you might like this so I I really like this feature it's something that I've already pointed out in my review of the car but check that out I still find that really nice okay and again so in Reverse now wow it still blows my mind every time I see that now Chinese car makers Jil of course are just phenomenal when it comes to light place like this so uh it looks great but among Chinese car makers it's no big deal in this segment it is a big deal 500 L of boot space this is the biggest boot in this segment now let's just pretend that this is a b segment car for a while let's just pretend that on the basis of its price alone uh so the convenience that it offers in terms of boot space is undeniable a big boot space always welcome and it has folding seats as [Music] well yep you get more room in here folding seats always welcome so yeah can't deny that with the proton L7 now we jump in front so the interior of the proton S70 is arguably the nicest in this segment uh hence why probably proton says that this is actually a C- segment car I'm actually inclined to say that it is a B+ segment yeah I just created that out of thin air good morning happy Saturday friendos yeah so anyway it's a uh brilliant interior is something that I've experienced previously by myself as well check out our other reviews independent reviews of the proton S70 where we tested this car uh on the road trip to pinang as well as later on a um on a solo drive anyway it's a very simplistic interior and in typical proton SLG F uh you know an in typical proton SLG fashion you get a huge infotainment screen this is of course the flag Flagship X variant so infotainment screen is larger you get a digital uh meter panel over here as well a meter cluster you get twin storage space over here you also get another storage space over here multiple cup holders a USB port over there a USB port down there and that's it I don't like the gear selector I'll say that I've always said that about the proton range and uh in the X90 as well is the same gear selector I just never liked it I just thought that yeah it's twin function it could it could be a single function proton says that it is there for safety it could be as easy as just putting an unlock button like every other car maker does but uh judging by the sales I think there a lot of people that don't mind it I just don't like it uh I also appreciate the fact that your convention settings such as air conditioning settings are over here but then there are other things as well that I think I wish could be easier such as the fact that even though you get a sunroof which is a feature for the flagship X variant alone opening it is usually the buttons are over here but not now so it's one step two-step process so this is your sunroof control and I open it through here so one two three steps rather than just you know just a single dedicated button for it so and it's also not a very big sunroof it's just about yeah big but the good thing is you can actually control how much you want it to open and close so you can just open it that much as well so if you're a smoker and uh you're smoking in the car this might let you air out the car a little bit that's but yeah don't smoke it's a dirty habit anyway uh as I've said a lot of the other controls are also in this uh in this digital screen as well such as your drive mode selectors Comfort ecos sport your panoramic the camera everything is located in here so even though your essential buttons such as your air conditioning controls over here the rest you have to dive into this digital screen quality no complaints uh I think you know the fonts the the switches everything is basically the same as almost all the other proton models and guys you get electronic seats in the flagship X as well in the proton S70 it's cheaper than the Honda City you get all of this stuff now Tiny Tim time to call him let's go jump behind [Applause] small this is small this is what I was complaining about the last time I got the car yeah you see like I can't knees are just basically rubbing up against y I got a like yeah spread my legs spread your legs which means that there third person but uh surprising though because the Honda City feels more spacious at the back here in fact in terms of back seats I think the Honda City offers the most spaciousness slash comfort of course you get a type A type uh type c or Ty type A and type c USB port and two TN air conditioning vents as well and armrests so that said I think the Honda City surprisingly has the most comfortable back seats yep definitely oh there's a lot of H room a lot of head room is good head room is definit compared to the rest yeah I think this has the most amount of Headroom so if you're tall you're going to find there to be ample a Headroom but your knees are going to be rubbing up against the front seats the Honda City will answer that for you but your head might be rubbing up against the you know headliner anyway nice place though I mean the the the leather is nice this the Finish nice finish nice finish the seats are soft stitching is good yeah thank you so powering the proton S70 is the most powerful engine in this uh comparison video a 1.5 L turbocharged 3 cylinder engine making 150 PS and 226 N M of torque it is also the thirstiest at 6.2 L per 100 km now uh Power is sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual clutch transmission now no complaints about the engine it is a very nice engine but yeah I do to hear this please start it up see the vibrations the sound it sounds like a diesel engine in fact and the vibrations especially during startup can be quite severe now this is you you can argue that keshi this is a typical character of a three-cylinder engines but the Ala is also a triple cylinder engine and it doesn't do this it doesn't sound like this and neither does it vibrate has VI ently as that now you might say also oh the the Bonnet is open of course it's going to be loud let's hear it yep still sounds like a diesel so that's the only thing about the engine of the proton S70 nice and Powerful not very economical it's actually quite thirsty and it sounds I'll let you make up your mind so in terms of driving the proton S70 before we actually start to do that let's just talk a little bit about its safety features uh of course all of the cars that are in this video come with six airbags and uh complete other systems as well with the S70 you got you get autonomous emergency braking forward Collision warning adaptive cruise control crucially with stop and go function you get a lane departure warning Lane departure prevention Lane centering control which is quite irritating traffic sign information Auto automatic high beam uh a TPMS system a tire pressure monitoring system as well as a 360° camera so obviously it comes with the works now I don't expect any of these cars to actually skimp out in terms of safety technology that's that would look really bad on any of those Brands but but in terms of driving let's find out the suspension of the proton S70 consists of mcferson struts at the front and a torsion Beam at the back now based on a lot of your comments and a lot of discussions online a lot of people believe that a tsion beam is inferior but I'll tell you this that a good tsion beam setup is always better than a bad multi-link setup so in that sense I got no complaints about the handling of the proton S70 in fact during a drive to pinang uh we you know found some really nice roads and chucked Chuck the S70 in and out of Corners with zero dramas even right now I'm doing some really legal speeds on the highway and there's very little of the world outside that is intruding back into the cabin refinement levels is undoubtedly really good the steering wheel feels nice as well so as far as driving the S70 goes I just got no complaints but the accelerator feel is something that I think could be improved on and a lot of feedback has already been given back to proton the accelerator actually feels too jerky that it it's suddenly it it it jerks you know when once you get on it there's just about half a second of nothingness and then suddenly power just surges in and this just usually results in a lot of wheel spin so that actually needs to be refined and uh a lot of Motoring journalist has actually given uh have given their feedback back to proton in fact during the press conference uh during the proton S70 drive to pinank during the press conference um a lot of journals actually agreed that the accelerator feels very fake it the the power is not linear it just jumps there's just a spike of power so that is something that uh proton will un um you know ultimately refine is just a software issue it's just a programming issue now if I put my foot down it's just a nice shove in the back the three-cylinder engine doing his thing of course you can hear it screaming and shouting but not too bad this flowing left-hander just a little bit of body roll no dramas so it feels very planted it feels comfortable it feels like a very nice car in fact besides the way the accelerator feels I've got no complaints about the way the proton S70 [Music] drives so one of the things that I'm I was also eager to compare between all these four cars was the clarity of the cameras a lot of cars come with RAR viw cameras 360 cameras these days but it is the Clarity of the cameras that actually matter not so much the existence of the cameras because anybody can put on a camera you can go put it on as an accessory but how clear is it so let's start with the proton S70 so we got Tiny Tim to actually be at the back of all these cars so we going to see how handsome his face looks and from from there we're going to judge the clarity of those cameras so proton S70 starting now let's do this row that's Tiny Tim you need to bend down that's there he is awesome thank you so with this you get a 360 cam obviously it's quite clear and we can see what's on the left what's on the right and up ahead as well do I can I zoom in nope do I get a see this is the beauty about the system on the proton S7 so I can see full frontal full rare sideways front panel and such so this ladies and gentlemen is how good the system is as far as the camera is concerned on the proton S70 the next one is the Honda City let's go see that and now in the Honda City let's see how good tiny team looks like tiny lower I didn't see your face really yeah there he is so thank you not as clear as the one on the proton S70 obviously it's very grainy uh as I've said the Honda City has been around for a while already and it shows in the Clarity of the camera systems but you get different views this is a more narrower view this is a wider View and this just shows what's directly below so this is great when you're reversing up against a wall and such now we go into the Vos let's do this and now in the Vos immediately you can tell that you see with the screen it has a more reflective screen so when it reflects like this it it actually makes things harder to see especially during the daytime what we saw in the Honda City as well as in the proton S70 was that the screen did not glare as much over here the the screen is glaring I can see you know the side window and such which is not that great but how does the camera look like all right Tim behind please yep I see you thank you it's obviously a lot better than the one on the uh Honda City in fact it probably matches the one on the proton S70 but because it glares so you really have to you know be careful because you really can't see much I see a lot of Reflection from the windows from the world outside so that kind of sort of just affects my view but besides that this is a wider View and this is basically a narrower view you get a front camera this is very cool quarter panel 3/4 panel side view rare quarter [Music] panel yeah definitely much better than the one in the Honda City comparable per perhaps even slightly better than the one in the proton S7 now finally Nissan ala let's go okay so now we in the Nissan Almera immediately you can tell it has a smaller screen and uh it does not reflect like the one in the Toyota Vos which is good now we see how clear the camera is all right Tim I see you thank you so I think this is comparable to the Honda City it's quite grainy it looks old um in fact I think the Honda City and the Nissan Al are the two oldest models over here and it shows in terms of the clarity of the cameras what what else do you get over here not much it's just your RAR View Camera do I get anything else this is your side view this your back view so so you only get two views do I can I yeah these are the only two views that you get with the Nissan ala in terms of clarity um I would say that the Toyota Vos has the best camera among these four cars the proton S70 is also just there but just not as clear as the ones on the Toyota Vios the Toyota Vios is just perfect it's just let down by that reflective screen but you can buy a cover for that you know from the aftermarket accessory you can just put an anti-reflection screen like you do on your phone and that should make it a lot better already so before we conclude this video let's just see what type of convenience all of these cars offer you when it comes to actually you know springing a flat tire let's say if they have a spare tire so we starting with the Ala you get a space saver tire so yes you get a you get a spare tire which is very important and then now Vios no spare tire no no spare tire unfortunately Honda City spare tire a space saver Tire better than no tire proton S70 spare tire as well so 3 to one the vs is unfortunately the only car in here that does not have a spare tire and guys just a quick Public Service Announcement if you ever if you ever get a SP uh uh leak or you sprung a leak with your tires or tire has burst please don't try to repair it by the side of the highway by yourself please wait across the barriers uh where you usually get a lot of jungles and stuff it's better to wait there rather than you know risking your life and changing the tire yourself just wait for um you know help to come it's much safer so anyway viewers come on so finally which is the car that actually is our quick well guess what guys we not really going to tell you how to spend your money because there's something there's a little something about each of these cars that we really like so let me share that with you if you are really into how good a car looks and you do not mind or you don't care about anything else then the Nissan ala is probably the best looking car over here of course it is dated it has been around for a while the works but I really like the way it looks especially in this GL glacial gray color this body kit is it worth 9,400 ring it well I don't think so but it really adds some character to the Ala but if you do go for this you have to make do with lesser power in fact it is the least powerful of all these cars over here but I'll go so far as to say that the interior is actually among the most comfortable and then then of course we have the Toyota Vios you really simply can't go wrong with the Toyota I don't like the way it looks but the interior well it is one of the nicer handling ones as far as spottier handling goes there's no doubt about it I just don't like the way the front end looks as I've already mentioned I don't mind the the rare of the car and everything else about the vs but the front doesn't do it for me the fact that this the boot space is small and the seats don't fall flat is also a problem for me and the back seats are just not that big not as spacious as everything else now the Honda City is probably the best of the rest because the city despite it being quite old as well just like the Ala it has been around for a while but the interior is still a nice place to be in refinement is good even though that CV the the noisy CVT transmission does annoy me but I think the interior is a nice comfortable place to be in the back seats as what we have demonstrated is actually quite spacious as well uh the the boot space despite being the smallest over here but the seats full flat so that adds a level of convenience that cars like the vs simply do not have and as Tiny Tim demonstrated earlier you might be wide but you can get comfortable in the city and now the proton S70 as I've said the Dark Horse of this comparison is it really a b or is it really a C- segment car well I'm inclined to believe proton now because when you compare it to the rest it excels it's big it's powerful and I really like the nvh and refinement levels of the S70 um it also has a very big boot biggest among them all is the most it is the most uh spacious however it is also very thirsty the the fuel consumption of the S70 is something that you should take note of and I really do not like the way the three-cylinder engine sounds like with the proton S7 if I have to spend my own money I would still go for the Honda City because I think it is the the best it offers the best balance of everything as I've said even though the proton S70 is actually you know it almost checks all the boxes and if this was a Formula 1 race the proton S70 would have lost it by 0.1 seconds that's how close this is uh and I'm a big believer in Apple carplay and Android auto as as soon as I step into a car that's the first thing I do I plug in my phone whether it's for my music navigation or anything else my life in a car revolves around Apple carplay the fact that the S70 does not have it it's a big problem for me but if you've been following the news proton has said that they will introduce Apple carplay and Android auto to their cars later this year and I'm really excited about that I think that will pretty much perfect this package that three-cylinder engine just does not cut it for me I know G has a 4-cylinder engine for this car perhaps they should try to explore how it feels like with the proton S70 my money goes on the Honda City so now it's time for you to share your comments which would you pick why would you pick that and uh I know a lot of you have a lot of things to say I'm quite used to a lot of your comments some good some nasty some just plain outlandish so let me have it do share your comments and as usual if you like what we are producing here if you like what we are doing over here do consider subscribing thank you for watching
