Good morning, good afternoon, good whatever time you're watching this video. It's afternoon for me. I don't know what time it is for y'all.
I'm glad to be back in this book. I hope y'all are ready for chapter 2 of New Kid by Jerry Craft, the book that we started reading. Now if we do a little review of chapter 1, we know that Jordan is about to start his first day at a new school and he's kind of nervous.
So let's see. how this first day turns out. Chapter 2, The Road to Riverdale, There and Back Again. So it's a little map from Washington Heights to Riverdale.
The annual first day of school zombie apocalypse. Washington Heights zombies. Inwood zombies.
Kingsbridge zombies. Look at all these zombies. Now do you think they're actually zombies or is something else going on here?
Maybe not ready for summer break to be ending and a little tired on their first day of school. Here we are, Riverdale Academy Day School. But they've called it rad since I went here.
You used to go here? Sure did. So did my dad.
And so do Liam's sister, Kirsten, and his little brother, Grayson. I dropped them off before coming to get you. Wow. Wake up, sleepyhead. I'm heading straight to the airport.
Make sure to introduce Jordan to your new friends. Okay, Dad. Look at all these zombies. Some just pictures there. Mr. Pierre will pick you guys up.
Mom will get your brother and sister. Who's Mr. Pierre? Eh, just a friend of the family. Come on, we don't want to be late.
I can't believe both your dad and your grandfather went here. You guys must really love this place, huh? Well, it's not like I had much of a choice.
Oh yeah, Liam, I can relate to that. Wow. Wow.
Wow. Man, this place is no joke. It's a really big school. You guys sure wear a lot of pink.
Mostly everyone shops at Grapevine Groves. By the way, it's salmon, not pink. Now here we have a thought bubble. So this means that he's thinking in his head, it's not something he's saying out loud.
Looks like the doll owl of an old Toys R Us. Hallelujah! He's singing Hallelujah when he sees this boy. Who's that?
Oh, that's Murio. He started here in kindergarten. Like me. He lives right down the street from me and...
Uh oh. What? Andrew and his sidekicks. Winston and Eric. They're sophomores.
Real jerks too. Nice vest, Murio. Sup, Murio.
Yeah, you look gangsta. Welcome to the upper school. Did your mommy let you pick out your own big boy clothes now? Why do they call him Murio? I heard because it rhymes with Oreo, but I still don't get it.
Oh, I do, unfortunately. An Oreo, white on the inside, black on the outside. But don't worry, Jordan. Most kids here are pretty cool. Let me see your schedule.
Sup, lame-o? So who's this? One of Grayson's middle school friends?
Nah, this is Jordan. He's in first form like us. You're in the first form? Wow, Jordan, you're really small. It's Jordan?
I'm Andy. Andy Peterson. So what sport do you play, Jordan? And what are you, anyway? He keeps calling him Jordan for some reason.
Huh? Forget it. Hey, I'm gonna be the starting quarterback for our football team.
So I know everyone here at Dad. Come on, let me give you the scoop on the kids in our form. Starting with Ashley and Ruby Woo.
Gossip girls, so keep away. Anime dork, keep away. away show off keep away computer geeks keep away awkward kids keep away other new kids keep away and you definitely want to keep away from the king of the dorks here whatever Whatever Andy.
Hey Jordan, we both have Ms. Raw for homeroom. Oh, me too. And you've got Mr. Garner for pre-algebra? You're gonna like him.
Cool, how come? Cause he's, he's, well, you'll see. There's the bell.
Come on, Liam G. Jordan! Colin, what's up dog? Yo, Andy, sup? Good morning everyone. Please settle down.
I miss Rall. This Andy guy doesn't seem to be the nicest fella around, saying all these judgmental things about these people. How does that make you feel, hearing him say all this stuff about people that he may not even know very well? I know I wouldn't like it. Good morning.
Good morning. Come in. Welcome.
And your name is? Andy Ellis, ma'am. Whoa! Sorry, bro.
That name is taken. By me. Well, now there are two of you. It's okay. I go by Drew anyway.
Great. That solves it. Please find a seat, Drew. And tell us a few things about yourself. Well, um, I live in the Bronx with my grandmother.
And my favorite subject is math. Here's a few pictures for you to look at. Looks like Jordan is staring at him. I wonder what he's thinking.
Excellent! Next, new students first. Hi, I'm Jordan. I live in Washington Heights and I love to draw. My name is Colin and I like to play lacrosse, baseball, football, and soccer.
And Andy is my guide. Welcome! Any other new students? Hi-woo!
I'm Mr. Honey Bunny and this is my best friend, Alexandra. We live on the Upper West Side and love to make pets. Nobody really knows what to think of her.
Well, here I am, my very first class, and I already can't wait for this day to end. Ring! You survived your first homeroom.
What class do you have now? Pre-algebra with Mr. Garner? Auntie says I'm gonna like him. Need me to show you how to get there? Nah, I can find it on the map, but thanks.
I'll save you a seat at lunch. Cool. Okay, now to the Pierre building.
Down the stairs, turn the corner, up the stairs, and through the doors. I don't think this is the Morgan Library, or the Wells Wing, or the Richardson Science Lab, or the Kalischer Photography Center. And here we have a little symbol, a fast forward symbol, so we can see that time's kind of speeding up in this section.
We're doing a little time skip. So that was how my day was, feeling lost, feeling alone, feeling lost and alone, and all this was before lunch. And that's the end of chapter two.
All right, let's go back and look at a few pages. So at the beginning of this chapter, we saw that Jordan was interested in Murio here. And then once he came into his class, he was looking at Drew. Now can anybody think about why he may have extra interest in these two characters?
If we remember in chapter one, Jordan's dad was a little worried about the diversity of the school and his son fitting in. And that can be a problem that a lot of students face. It doesn't have to be because of this reason.
We can assume that Jordan is a little more interested in Drew and Murio because they have the same skin color they're both people of color and it may feel like he's not the only one he has other people like him when really he's just the same as all these other students. He already has two friends with Andy, even though Andy may not be the best guy right now, and Liam who is his guide but you can tell he's a friendly guy. He wants to help Jordan out. But that still doesn't shake the feeling of Jordan being alone.
Now this may be a feeling that we felt before if we're in a situation where we think we're alone and really we're surrounded by people. Look, he's in classes, he's got friends, he's got people that want to help him and still you can feel alone. I've had this feeling before in my college classes there's not many guys and when I was a freshman in most of my classes I was the only boy in all of the of my classes.
So of course during the start I felt a little a little different a little left out but over time my classmates and my professors my teachers they they were all very supportive and they were very supportive of me. made me realize that I'm not alone. Just because I'm the only guy, just because I'm the only type of this specific person, doesn't mean that we can't be friends with the other people in the class. And I think that's what Jordan's going to realize as we go on.
Just because there's not many people that look like him, doesn't mean that he's alone. So the question I want to leave you with before we start chapter three in the next video is what can you... do to make sure everyone is included and knows they are not alone?
So let's think of this scenario that there's a new student to the class and right away you want to make sure that they have a good first day, that they know they have friends, and that they're not going to be left out. What can you do to help your fellow classmate? Thank you very much for watching. I hope you enjoyed chapter 2. Have a good rest of your day.
