Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Introduction

  • Classrooms today are diverse, with students having unique learning needs.
  • Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to create inclusive curriculum.
  • Aim: Minimize barriers and maximize learning for all students.

Key Concepts of UDL

Universal

  • Universal Curriculum: Designed to be used and understood by everyone.
  • Curriculum should offer genuine learning opportunities for each student.

Learning

  • Learning involves three broad networks of the brain:
    1. Recognition: The 'what' of learning.
    2. Skills & Strategies: The 'how' of learning.
    3. Caring & Prioritizing: The 'why' of learning.
  • Students need to gain knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm.

Design

  • Design for Diversity: Curriculum, like universally designed buildings, should accommodate all learners, including those in the margins.
    • Example: Curb cuts, ramps, and captioning benefit everyone.
  • UDL goes beyond access; it builds in support and challenge.

Applying the UDL Framework

  1. Identify Learning Goals

    • Define what students should know, do, and care about.
  2. Identify Barriers

    • Consider barriers that may prevent diverse students from reaching goals.
  3. Use UDL Principles

Three UDL Principles

  1. Multiple Means of Representation

    • Present content in various media and provide supports.
    • Use graphics, animation, highlight critical features, activate background knowledge, and support vocabulary.
  2. Multiple Means of Action and Expression

    • Allow students different ways to express their knowledge.
    • Provide models, feedback, and supports for proficiency.
  3. Multiple Means of Engagement

    • Provide choices to fuel interest and autonomy.
    • Encourage risk-taking and learning from mistakes.

Conclusion

  • Keep the learning goal in mind.
  • Remove curriculum barriers and maintain appropriate challenges.

Recap

  • Show information in different ways.
  • Allow varied approaches to learning tasks.
  • Offer engaging options to maintain student interest.
