Hi all, welcome to my tutorial. This is Vishnu. This tutorial is about data visualization using Qlik Sense. Qlik Sense is one of the best BI visualization tool available in market, introduced by an organization called Qlik Tech.
And about Qlik Tech, Qlik Tech is one of the biggest game player in BI market, operating from 1993, providing various BI services to around 1700 plus customers all around the world today. Myself having around 5 plus years experience in BI tools and technologies, especially on QlikView and Qlik Sense. So by end of this tutorial, I will ensure that all of the subscribers will be able to use Qlik Sense in a professional level, even though they are not from a technical background. Today we will not be much discussing about Qlik Sense.
Today is just an introduction into BI visualization. So before starting Qlik Sense, you guys will have a clarity what exactly what kind of services we are providing to customers. Now let me move to the contents of today's discussion. Today we will be discussing more about what is data visualization?
What is the importance of data visualization in business? Why BI tools are specifically required for data visualization? And who are the end users of our applications? And what are the top BI tools in markets? Ok guys, now let's start with the first question.
What is data visualization? So here I have given a definition for data visualization as well as a process for diagram for data visualization that includes the steps of data visualization. Ok, now let me read the definition for data visualization. Data visualization is a process of converting data into information.
in the form of charts, diagrams, pictures to help the decision making in meantime so this definition is pretty simple what we are doing in data visualisation is the raw data what is stored in databases or data sources we are taking it, we are converting it into the charts so by seeing those charts user must be able to make some sense or insights out of it and perform some actions that is giving a positive impact to his business so that's it we are basically converting the row data into information in the form of charts and diagrams. Now let me move to the steps of data visualization. Basically there are three steps includes. Those are extraction, model and visualization.
And in extraction level as everyone knows extracting the data from data sources. The first part about BI tools are like BI tools are compatible with any kind of data sources. Let it be a big data data sources let it be cloud based data sources, sql based data sources or let it be flat file systems or excel files so the first stage is extracting all the data from all these data sources that are required for performing the creation of insights and once the data is extracted we will be storing it locally in the systems so we could Ensure the data availability all the time. Once the data extraction process is completed, the data will be stored in local systems. After that, the stored data will be passed into the model.
So what is happening in model? Model is basically a the data cleanup part and that making the in model what we are exactly doing is this row data we are cleaning it up first and making it most compactable for the visualization so model part is very important because an inefficient model could give performance issues in the visualization layer okay so what is happening in model is we are taking the data we'll perform the cleanup operations like handling null values removing unwanted columns and rows and creating the interlink between tables and creating the calendar for time series operations all those things will be done in model layer the outcome of model layer might be a single table or a set of tables those are interlinked then comes the next layer that is visualization in visualization what we are doing basically is we are creating charts out of the result of this model So this model will be giving you a table or a set of tables that are interlinked. Now we will create charts out of it. So basically most of the charts require a dimension as well as a metric. So dimension is nothing but the columns that is coming out of the model layer.
And metric is nothing but the operations that you are performing on those columns, aggregate operations. So aggregate operations include count, sum, average, standard deviation, all those things are the basic. matrix that we are performing on on top of some columns that is coming out of model layer so understand only this much about data visualization now we will be moving into the importance of data visualization importance of data visualization so here we will be discussing how important is to you visualize the data to get the insights out of it so if you ask me a question is it necessary to visualize the data to understand the data so i would i would say no it's not always necessary to under visualize to understand the data but what is the advantage that we are getting if you are visualizing it that I'll try to show you here so let's say I have my data in a simple tabular form I have downloaded one data set from Kaggle so this data set basically tells you the things so you here you can see all the properties of data sales transactions like order number quantity ordered price each sales amount order date status of the sales all those things you can see here so let me try to analyze it analyze it and get some insights out of it okay so I want to know what is overalls overall amount of sales that I have performed I can just select that particular column and get to know okay it's around 1 crore 32,000 and I want to know what are the overall sales transactions has happened so far so i can select this order number column and take a distinct count of it so it will be like around uh 1 lakh 48 000 and i want to know what is the current status statuses of my transactions you can select it here all the statuses are available so i want to know what is the in progress sales transactions here so i can select in progress so i'll get the i'll fit i filtered that data based on that in progress status so here i can get the in progress sales amount it's around 1 lakh 44 000 see i can analyze this data without visualizing it also but what is the advantage if we are visualizing it that's what exactly the question here is so i have created a dashboard based on this data in click sense so here my dashboard the simple dashboard there is no much visualizations included so it is just to showcase what is the importance of visualizing the data so here i have created a matrix sales quantity so sales quantity is nothing but the sum of ordered quantity how many number of products that i have sold and sales value sales value is nothing but the sum of sales here what's the worth of sales that i have done and here you can see the current status of the sales orders and here you can get a time series trend of sales and you can see the country wise sales so here you can get an okay in which country you are making USA making most of the sales and the second one is Spain third one is France so on it goes on then here there is a map heatmap for country and the product so here you can get to know in USA I'm selling classic cars more vintage cars second second second one is vintage cars motorcycles is also very high most of the sales are happening in usa so those kind of insights you can make so if you compare a tabular form and a visualized form i'm getting them i'm getting more insights in meantime from a visualized form so in business it is very important to get the get to know the data as soon as possible so they can perform the actions they can more focus on the actions to be taken instead of spending more time on analyzing the excels or writing SQL queries to get to know the information so see and one more advantage here is see you can make any selections and you can get to know data suppose I just need to know only sales that I have done in US you can just select us so the whole dashboard is getting changed accordingly see this is overall sales value that I have before and these are time series trend and this is the current status of orders that I have sold in USA.
So if you want to remove the filter you can remove it here. So one time you configure all these metrics and keep whenever the data come the dashboard gets updated automatically and the user can perform the analysis based on this. So see how by seeing this you will get to know okay it is very when the data is in a visualized form it is very easy to understand it.
So you don't need to spend much time on understanding the data you can spend that much amount of time for taking the necessary decisions to improve the business. So that's what the importance of data visualizations.
