Learning Morse Code

Introduction

  • Setting the stage for learning Morse code
  • Story of Samuel Morse: Motivation for creating Morse code
    • Received a letter about his wife's sickness
    • Arrived too late to see her before she passed away

Overview of the Lecture

  • Two methods for learning Morse code:
    1. Quick method for writing out Morse code chart
    2. Method for memorizing sounds of Morse code letters

Basics of Morse Code

  • Composed of dots (•) and dashes (—)
  • Different combinations represent different letters
  • Structure:
    • Dot takes 1 beat
    • Dash takes 3 beats
    • Space between letters: 3 beats
    • Space between words: 7 beats

Memorization Techniques

  • First Memorization Technique:

    • Use a story to remember the alphabet in order
    • Example story:
      • E.T. named "Ian"
      • Uses WD-40 to create high voltage frequencies
      • Says "LOL"
      • Gets ready for bed in a box sized "Q"
  • Binary Tree Method:

    • Visual representation of letters organized in a binary tree
    • Left branch = dot, Right branch = dash
    • Example:
      • E = •
      • T = —
      • S = • • •
      • O = — — —

Sound Association for Each Letter

  • Importance of Sound:
    • Learn through sound rather than visual representation

Examples of Sound Associations:

  • A: "a part" (• —)
  • B: "Bob is the man" (— • • •)
  • C: "coca-cola" (— • — •)
  • D: "dog did it" (— • •)
  • E: "eh" (•)
  • F: "fetch a fireman" (• • — •)
  • G: "good gravy" (— — •)
  • H: "hippity hop" (• • • •)
  • I: "I bid" (• •)
  • J: "in Jaws, Jaws, Jaws" (• — — —)
  • K: "kangaroo" (— • —)
  • L: "Los Angeles" (• — • •)
  • M: "mmm mmm" (— —)
  • N: "nudist" (— •)
  • O: "oh my god" (— — —)
  • P: "a poopy smell" (• — — •)
  • Q: "God save the queen" (— — • —)
  • R: "rotation" (• — •)
  • S: "si, si, si" (• • •)
  • T: "tall" (—)
  • U: "uniform" (• • —)
  • V: "victory v" (• • • —)
  • W: "the world war" (• — —)
  • X: "X marks the spot" (— • • —)
  • Y: "you're a cool dude" (— • — —)
  • Z: "zinc zookeeper" (— — • •)
