Understanding Sounds of the Letter G

Hola, welcome to Butterfly Spanish. Me llamo Ana and in today's lesson vamos a aprender, we're going to learn, the letter la letra G, la letra G. Okay well the letter G has different sounds depending on what is the vowel that is coming after the G.

So we're going to go first through all the combinations that we can find and then we're going to make some conclusions and we're going to understand this strange character from the Spanish alphabet, okay? Bueno, vamos a empezar. La G, G-I-A es gato, gato.

G-I-E es GENARO GEN-I es girasol. G-I-O es gordo o gorda. G-I-U es gutural. That's a very strange word, but gutural, from your throat, guttural.

G- y u es gutural but there's something funny here a lot of the times the letter g the u and another vowel makes a different sound and what is it let's investigate this g plus u plus e guerra war guerra ¿Sí? Guerra. G plus I.

G plus U plus I. Guitarra. Ding, ding, ding.

Guitarra. Guitar. Guitarra.

Very good. Now, guerra, guitarra. Pero, vergüenza.

Lingüística. Pingüino. Vergüenza, when it's like, oh, qué vergüenza, it's like, oh, what an embarrassment. Qué vergüenza, what an embarrassment.

This is embarrassment, shame. No, shame is more pena. Vergüenza is embarrassment. Vergüenza. Lingüística.

Pingüino. Oh, it changes, eh? Well, why?

Well, I know why. Because the vowel U. La U after G and after Q es guerrero y queso.

The vowel after these two letters, these two consonants, uh-oh, it's silent. It doesn't have a sound. Guerrero, queso. Oh, but if you see this too. Funny dots.

That is a diéresis. Oh, that's a weird name. Diéresis. This is an R. Diéresis.

Oh, then it has a sound. Vergüenza. But guerrero.

No guerrero. No queso. Queso. Guerrero. Guerra.

Guitarra. Pinguino, penguin, pinguino, iguido, iguido. So now do you understand? It is very easy. You just have to see if it has, the U has a diéresis, then it has a sound, the U.

But if it doesn't have a diéresis, it's silent, silent. Guerrero, queso. Guerra, guitarra. Oh, vergüenza, lingüística, güira. Unless you see the diéresis, you don't pronounce that U.

Okay, well, let's review just quickly. Gato, genaro, girasol, gordo, gutural, guerra. guitarra, vergüenza LINGUÍSTICA GUIDO Do you see how depending on the vowel that is following the letter G, the sound changes? This is GATO, GORDO, GUTURAL but this is G, G, very good. So in this case the G has a character, it fits with a A roll, if it's with the A and with the O or with the U, it has another character if it's the U and the E, the U and the I, and it's got a different character if it's with the I and with the E.

It has different sounds. Sometimes it's a G de gato and sometimes it's like G de genaro, que podría ser J. Here the sound is like J, Jota. Here the sound is Gato, G and J, G and J. Very good.
