How to Use an AED in an Emergency

Importance of AED Usage

  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is essential in emergencies.
  • Anyone can use it to save lives until medical help arrives.
  • Every second counts in an emergency situation.

Steps to Take in an Emergency

  1. Verify the Person's Condition:
    • Check if the person is responsive.
    • Ask loud questions, e.g., "Are you okay? Can you hear me?"
  2. Call for Help:
    • Instruct someone to call 9-1-1 and report back.
  3. Retrieve the AED:
    • Have someone get the AED from the save station.

Recognizing Symptoms

  • Agonal Breathing: Unusual breathing/gasping common in sudden cardiac arrest.
  • Start CPR immediately if the person is not breathing normally.

Using the AED

  1. Prepare the Patient:
    • Remove all clothing from the chest (cut if necessary).
    • Expose the chest fully.
  2. Apply AED Pads:
    • Remove the protective cover and adhesive pads.
    • Follow the picture instructions on the pads:
      • Press pad firmly on the bare skin, following the diagrams.
  3. Analyze and Shock:
    • Ensure no one is touching the patient.
    • Let the AED analyze the heart rhythm.
    • If a shock is advised, press the flashing button and ensure everyone stands clear.
    • The shock is delivered by the device.
  4. Immediate Post-Shock Actions:
    • It is now safe to touch the patient and start CPR.
    • Follow AED prompts for performing CPR.
    • Stay clear when AED is re-analyzing.
    • Continue until medical help arrives.

Using AED on a Child

  • Check if child pads are available.
  • If not, adult pads can be used following specific placement instructions:
    • Place one pad on the center of the chest (between the nipples).
    • Place the second pad in the center of the back (between shoulder blades).
  • Follow voice prompts from the AED.

Key Tips

  • Always be aware of the nearest AED location.
  • Don’t hesitate to use it in an emergency.
  • Keep up-to-date with CPR and AED skills.
