How to Use an AED in an Emergency
Importance of AED Usage
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is essential in emergencies.
- Anyone can use it to save lives until medical help arrives.
- Every second counts in an emergency situation.
Steps to Take in an Emergency
- Verify the Person's Condition:
- Check if the person is responsive.
- Ask loud questions, e.g., "Are you okay? Can you hear me?"
- Call for Help:
- Instruct someone to call 9-1-1 and report back.
- Retrieve the AED:
- Have someone get the AED from the save station.
Recognizing Symptoms
- Agonal Breathing: Unusual breathing/gasping common in sudden cardiac arrest.
- Start CPR immediately if the person is not breathing normally.
Using the AED
- Prepare the Patient:
- Remove all clothing from the chest (cut if necessary).
- Expose the chest fully.
- Apply AED Pads:
- Remove the protective cover and adhesive pads.
- Follow the picture instructions on the pads:
- Press pad firmly on the bare skin, following the diagrams.
- Analyze and Shock:
- Ensure no one is touching the patient.
- Let the AED analyze the heart rhythm.
- If a shock is advised, press the flashing button and ensure everyone stands clear.
- The shock is delivered by the device.
- Immediate Post-Shock Actions:
- It is now safe to touch the patient and start CPR.
- Follow AED prompts for performing CPR.
- Stay clear when AED is re-analyzing.
- Continue until medical help arrives.
Using AED on a Child
- Check if child pads are available.
- If not, adult pads can be used following specific placement instructions:
- Place one pad on the center of the chest (between the nipples).
- Place the second pad in the center of the back (between shoulder blades).
- Follow voice prompts from the AED.
