During Easter, we remember the last days of Jesus Christ. It is a week with lots of culture, traditions and Catholic religious symbols. These days there are processions in almost all cities and villages, because Catholic church was very important in the history of Spain. Easter holidays are Palm Sunday, Maunday Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Each procession is different because it referes to a different time of the Bible. For example, this procession is cheerful because it reminds the day that Jesus entered Jerusalem. But this procession is serious, because it reminds the suffering and death of Jesus. The most important part of a procession is the "paso", which is a structure with flowers and a sculpture of Jesus or the Virgin Mary. The brotherhoods organize the processions. They take the "paso" of a church and carry it along the streets for hours. Listen! Let's go! Listen! Let's go! Front step! Come, let's go up. The people who follow the "pasos" are called nazarene or penitents, and are dressed in a tunic. They can also wear a hood on their head. In each brotherhood, colors of the tunics are different. The Roman soldiers carry Jesus to die on the cross. There's always a cross in front of the nazarenes. Behind the "paso" is a music band. The bearers carry the "pasos". They walk slowly and coordinated because the "pasos" are very heavy. The bearers can go outside or inside the "paso". The foreman leads the way and guides the bearers. One quite short step to the right! Good! There it is! Eh? Good, good! Let's go to the front! Juanjo, don't push! Morales, help Juanjo! Good! Let's go to the front! The bearers need to stop and rest often. It is hard, but they are happy because they have great faith. When the "paso" is stopped, Someone can sing a flamenco song called "saeta". ...unite it, for god's sake, I can't see it (oh) suffer... Easter is celebrated in March or April, but every year on different dates. This week schools are closed, that's why, for many people, these are short spring holidays. Thousands of people go to see the processions. Non-believers see this tradition with respect. Believers get very emotional when the procession happens. The most important processions are held in the Center of Spain, in Andalucia and above all, in Seville. I can't explain the feelings of Easter. (English translation by Elham Arabi)
