CEMC's Open Courseware - Lesson 5: Graphing Patterns

Introduction to Graphs

  • Graphs can depict the relationship between two quantities.
  • Important Questions:
    • What information does the graph convey?
    • Total cost of buying 1 song? 3 songs?
    • Predict the formula for the total cost of n songs.

Example: Cost of Songs Graph

  • Graph Overview
    • Horizontal Axis: Number of Songs
    • Vertical Axis: Total Cost
    • Points: (1,3), (2,6), (3,9), (4,12)

Lesson Goals

  • To use a graph to display a sequence of numbers.
  • To predict sequence values using a graph.
  • To find the general term of a sequence from a graph.

Practical Exercise: Candy-Grams Graph

  • Graph Overview
    • Horizontal Axis: Number of Candy-Grams
    • Vertical Axis: Total Cost
    • Points: (1,4), (2,5), (3,6), (4,7)

Tasks

  1. Predict the cost of purchasing 7 candy-grams.
  2. Determine how many candy-grams can be purchased with $16.

Conclusion

  • Understanding graphs is critical for visualizing and predicting data patterns and sequences.
