Too many teachers and students, school is a battleground. And if things get bad enough, they have the power to ruin each other's lives. Discipline is a constant problem. Shouts, threats, intimidation on both sides. How can you maintain discipline and keep the peace?
It used to be so easy, or at least we remember it that way. Students respected authority, and the teacher's leadership was rarely challenged. Today, our world is shaped by immense pressures.
Family breakups, violence, drugs, child abuse, and a relentless assault of fast-paced media. The result? An erosion of respect for teachers, schools, and learning. Traditional discipline strategies don't work anymore, and teachers are looking for new ideas, new ways to cope.
Discipline with Dignity has been a tremendous help to the teachers in our school district. It's been able to give teachers those extra tools to work with all kinds of young people. Students are important. Students are the reason that... teachers and administrators are involved in schools and we need to be humane and humanistic in our relationship with those students let's look at some traditional discipline methods and see why they're not effective anymore Cory how many times have I told you to get here on time you can't tell time can't you Susan, didn't I tell you yesterday to not talk when other people are talking?
Didn't I? I forgot. Just head down to the principal's office and let him handle it. Out of here! Rude and mean.
Now I think you owe Michael and the whole class an apology. I mean it. Sarah, where is your homework?
I don't know. Well, who does know? Nobody. Here again, Matt?
You come up with a plan for better behavior or it'll be three whacks. How many of these methods have you used? Did they work for long? Probably not, because these methods attack a child's dignity. They virtually assure the continuation of a power struggle and misery for both teacher and student.
