Day One Overview
- Warm-up and Review (Steps 1-4) takes approximately 15 minutes
- Introduction of New Concept (Step 5) takes the remaining 15 minutes
Steps Breakdown
Step 1: Phonemic Awareness
- No student materials needed
- Activities: Blending phonemes to form words, segmenting phonemes from words
- Duration: ~2 minutes
- Purpose: Supports decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling)
Step 2: Visual Drill
- Use lesson slides; students respond with grapheme and phoneme
- Duration: ~3 minutes
- Focus: Reinforce grapheme-phoneme correspondences
- Example: Students say “C spells /k/” for grapheme C
Step 3: Auditory Drill
- Students use a whiteboard or paper
- Present phonemes, students form corresponding graphemes while repeating sounds
- Duration: ~5 minutes
- Purpose: Reinforces phoneme-grapheme connections and builds automaticity
Step 4: Blending Drill
- Use UFly Blending Board App
- Duration: ~5 minutes
- Focus: Segmentation and blending of sounds to read words
- Word chains used; only previously taught graphemes included
Step 5: New Concept
- Duration: ~15 minutes
- Involves clear and direct explanation of the new concept
- Includes articulatory gesture explanation and letter formation practice
- Practice with reading and spelling new grapheme (e.g., SH)
