hi everyone welcome back to my channel um for those who doesn't know me my name is Robin and I do videos about finance and CFA related content so if you are interested in those kind of thing feel free to um subscribe to my Channel or follow me on LinkedIn and Instagram so for today video we are going to talk about how to networking effectively for students um because for me myself I am I was a student um a few months ago and um thanks to a lot of networking and meeting people that has led to my current career opportunity um as a business valuation analyst so networking is crucial for a career development providing opportunities to meet new people and learn more about their perspective gain more more valuable information within the industry that you're interested in and also possible uh receiving mentorship in the future so in a nutshell networking is about building meaningful connections that benefit both personal and professional development in this video we are going to talk about five things that you can do to um better up your networking skill so the first thing would be buing an online presence second one would be attending networking events the third one would be utilize campus resources and joining student Organization for number four it would be informational interview and the last one would be internship and volunteers so let's get straight into the first [Music] one so in order to build a strong online presence you need to develop a consistent personal brand across online platform a professional LinkedIn profile um that highlight your unique skills in what sets you apart showcase your academic achievements skills and projects um participate in online forums and discussion groups related to your field in my case I was really into um um Wall Street Oasis that helps that people talk about uh their experience within Investment Banking private Equity asset management and more on the finance um sectors also engage in conversations and share your insights there um it can be um within your Club in campus or on those uh forums that I mentioned you need to keep up to date with the industry Trends and news the second part would be very important which is attending networking events um it can be attending or participating in industry specific conference workshops and seminar it can also be engaged with professionals and peers to expand your network and focusing on building genuine relationship rather than simply collecting business cards to give you an example it would be that um try our best to um attend the networking events that happens around the campus are the ones that are promoted on LinkedIn um and a lot of them are going to be online because um of how things have changed after covid-19 so just um just register and participate in those networking events uh for students and try your best to engage with meaningful conversations with the um with the recruiters and the uh managers there the um the speakers and try not to talk so much about uh like specific questions that are on on your list and following them in order um try your best to have like a meaningful conversation like peerto peer chat I forgot to mention that um you also need to show your interest in others work and be willing to offer support or some kind of like engagement in the future for the third one I would recommend you to utilize campus resources and join student organizations as a student you have a lot of resources in campus that are actually free that is not well known um within the students so I feel that it's something that um should be um recognized more and talked more um within the students communities should take advantage of career services and networking events organized by your University um connect with the Alumni network be an active member of relevant student organization it can be your uh Finance clubs the investment clubs the accounting clubs or the clubs that um you're interested in getting a career in networking itself it doesn't have to be with um industry professionals with um so much of work experience and stuff it can actually be uh peers and colleagues that um you're working with in the clubs that you are engaging with um on day-to-day basis uh in campus um you know that in the future they will have their own career professionals and um their career developments so always keep in touch and um engaging with them will help you in a long run in the future also attending meetings collaborate on project and connect with um like mind individuals as for informational interview um doing coffee chat for you to as a student that you must engage in some kind of coffee chat that you can um organize yourself or being organized by kind of like a a mentorship program or such but um you can yourself you a student can reach out to professionals via LinkedIn or email for informational interviews to learn about their career paths prepare thoughtful questions and seek for advice um make it not generic don't try to find those typical questions on uh the internet but trying your best to come up with the questions yourself um by looking through their pre previous experience and current experience on LinkedIn try to Tyler your questions that both matching your interest and makes you think that um the question will um appeal to the uh to the professionals interest as well focus on building connection rather than trying to extract information again you should have um a set of questions that um you should prepare yourself um that is ker mate but at the same time when you are in the uh coffee chat itself um try not to follow the the question like stick like like one after one um focus on the conversations the engagement instead and you might have uh some questions pop up right after their answer so that is highly um recommended to have that um you actually actively listen to their uh conversation their insights and um take out um what is important and what is actually interesting for you um that you learn from um that person after the uh coffee chat has ended Um send a personalized thank you email after any networking events or information interview um and yeah maintain regular um Comm communication through emails or LinkedIn message to stay on their radar um yeah do it regularly with um all of your uh coffee chat people lastly for internships and volunteering um I would say that gain practical experience through internship and volunteering is really important and that can leverage you a lot in the networking events or the coffee chat because it shows that you already have experiences um or great interested in that area and that that shows to the recruiter or any professionals that um you are actively engaging with networking with colleagues supervisors and Professionals in your field um that is really helpful because um when you do your internship um you have your seniors your or peers that um you don't know you you don't think much of it but it's actually um networking in itself that want you do volunteering and internships um the people that doing that with you um and the one that is um supervising you the one that you are actively engaging with um that is also a form of communication networking it's a good thing uh with internship and volunteering programs is that um it helps you to identify potential mentors in your field as well um someone that is senior to you and have years of experience and such and can guide you in your career path in the future um ask for guidance and feedback and be open to learning more from their experiences do take initiatives to reach out to a professional in within the company that you are interning in or volunteering in again take initiatives and propose collaboration on Project or Express interested in learning from their experiences so in conclusion effective networking is a continuous process so really be patient and persistent in building and maintaining your professional relationships that is all I have for today if you have any questions or any advice that you can give me to better improve uh my content in future feel free to um message
