Matter Certification Process
Importance
Ensures compliance to specifications
Guarantees interoperability among devices
Benefits to consumers: authentic, functional, interoperable products with the Matter logo
Certification Methods
Complete Product Testing
Certification by Similarity
Certificate Transfer Program
Steps to Certification
Development:
Create the product
CSA Membership:
Apply through the CSA portal (different levels of membership)
Vendor ID (vid) & Product ID (pid):
Obtained from CSA
Pre-certification Run:
Conduct in your lab using CSA certification tool
Authorized Test Lab (ATL):
Submit product for official testing
Submit Documentation:
Include Declaration of Conformity and Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS)
Transport Attestations:
Needed depending on the type of product (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread)
CSA Review & Certification:
Receive certification and artifacts
Rapid Recertification (for OTA updates)
Applicable for new firmware versions
Conduct tests in your lab, submit results to ATL and then to CSA
Expressive Certification Assistant Service
Helps customers to certify Matter products
Can work with test labs or provide pre-certification testing
Offer pre-negotiated certification prices
Device Attestation and Certificates
Attestation Goals
Certification Attestation:
Ensuring valid and verifiable Matter certification
Device Attestation:
Confirming the device is a genuine Matter device
Software Attestation:
Ensuring the firmware is Matter compliant
Cryptographic Verification:
Verification without the need for centralized infrastructure
Distributed Compliance Ledger (DCL)
Non-centralized, cryptographically secured database
Types of Entries: Product Attestation Authorities, Vendor Info, Device Models & Certification Status, Device Software Version Info
Device Attestation Process
Based on public-private key cryptography
Begins at DCL with Product Attestation Authorities (PAA)
Chain of trust from PAA -> PAI -> Device Attestation Certificates (DAC)
Manufacturing Complexity
Requirements
Each device needs a DAC signed by CSA-approved PAA
Private keys must be securely stored
Unique passcodes/verifiers for devices
Expressive Pre-provisioning Service
CSA approved PAA
