Lecture Notes: The Seven Sacraments and Their Normative Frequency

Introduction

  • Speaker: Father Wade Menezes, Fathers of Mercy
  • Focus: The seven sacraments and how often they should be received according to Church teachings.

Sacraments Received Once

  • Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders
    • Can only be received once.
    • These sacraments leave a spiritual character or indelible mark on the soul.

Sacraments Received Repetitiously and Frequently

  • Confession and Eucharist
    • Can be received repeatedly and frequently, even daily.
    • Daily confession is advisable only when not led by scrupulosity.

Sacraments Received Repetitiously but Not Frequently

  • Matrimony and Anointing of the Sick
    • Can be received again but not frequently.
    • Matrimony: Possible to remarry if a spouse dies.
    • Anointing of the Sick:
      • Received when in danger of death due to illness or old age.
      • For persistent illness (e.g., cancer), it can be received monthly or when health worsens.

Theological Basis

  • Sacraments are rooted in Sacred Scripture.
  • Each sacrament is an efficacious sign of grace, instituted by Christ.
  • They are entrusted to the Church, dispensing Divine life through the Holy Spirit.
  • Worthily received sacraments are a literal meeting with the Lord Jesus, making the mystery of Christ present.

Conclusion

  • The sacraments play a crucial role in the spiritual life, providing grace and a connection to Jesus Christ.
  • Importance of understanding their frequency and significance in daily life.
