Lecture Notes on Al Imam Muhammad and Hadith Preservation

today's subject is the subject of Al Imam Muhammad the importance of Al IM and his book which we know as why this subject is important is because like Allah subhanahu waala has preserved alran Kim when Allah subhanahu waala says indeed we revealed a which isran and indeed we will preserve it remember when the plural is stated in Al Quran Kim it refers to theat of [Music] Allah because theat of Allah are multiple so the plural is utilized we but theat all go back to the that of Allah subhanahu wa taala but Allah subhanahu wa taala has guaranteed the preservation of alquran Kim alongside this preservation ofan is the preservation of the of which in Alan Allah subhanahu waala stat addressing the best of [Music] creation Allah subhanahu waala says in order that you may explain it explain Al Quran Kim the Bayan of the Quran is found within the without the Sunnah a person becomes misguided they cannot interpret the Quran correctly so when Allah subhanahu wa taala says we preserve the Quran it also entails the preservation of the when Allah subhanahu waala commands the Believers eat and drink eat and drink until the white string is distinct from the black string from the dawn a companion ofam acted upon this verse of the Quran in the month of Ramadan by eating during the pre-or meal the S meal and placing a black string and a white string Under the pillow and then observing the black string and the white string until he was able to see them after the darkness had dissipated he went back to and mentioned that he did this andam said you must have a broad pillow because the meaning of the white string is the light of the morning and the meaning of the dark string is the darkness of the night so that is the Bayan of in order that you may explain the Quran to the people likewise the Judgment of Allah subh says and by your lord they will never believe until they make you a judge in those disputes that arise amongst them and then they do not find any restriction in their hearts from the Judgment that you give and they submit wholeheartedly completely to the Judgment of so the Judgment [Music] of is given Authority by Allah subhanahu wa taala subh and this is known as the Sunnah of denial of the Sunnah is kuur it takes a person out of the fold of Islam denial of the authority given to the prophet s this Sunnah of the is preserved in the books of if some one accepts that they submit to the authority of they may say where do we find the Bayan the explanation of the Quran of we turn them to the books of Hadith but in this day age where we live in times of Al fan of course the fan increased day by day there is no year except that the year after it is worse every year the fan increase that one of those fan is the fan in belief if someone accepts the Sunnah of wasam they may attempt to place doubt in the minds and hearts of people with regard to the preservation of theah some of them start with the Sunnah and the books of the Hadith then they go towards the the recitation of the Quran then they go towards the Quran the orthography of the Quran placing doubt in people's minds and hearts this is why it is essential for us to know the importance of the of and the personality of IM because when a person a guiding individual would want to place doubt in the hearts and minds of people with regard to a he starts with because the some of them said that muaah is like a curtain for the companions when a person removes the curtain then they go beyond what is behind the curtain similarly when it comes to the books of Hadith people attempt to Assault The credibility of theah of IM bukari they start with the because the IMI is known as the most authentic book after The Book of Allah subh this is a common phrase but what does this phrase entail imik who passed away in the year 476 the teacher of IM Abu ham Muhammad alaz who passed away in the year 505 hij Al IM states that if a man takes an oath as recorded by that if a man takes an oath that whatever is in the if it is not authentic then my wife is divorced that if he takes this oath Al IM Al who is known as IM because he led Salah in both makah and the most learned man of his time the leading shaf jurist he said the does not occur because whatever is in bukari and Muslim is authentic what does this phrase entail to understand that we look at the time and the life of Al IM bukar and we learn with regard to Al imar who is known as Muhammad born in bukara Central Asia and when he was born remember he was farsy speaking because that region was conquered by and in fact the had conquered like he was a part of the Expedition that conquered Kabul so they had reached within Afghanistan itself and with within Sy that region that entire region but the native tongue of the people in that region was fari this is why you find fari words in theah of IM bukari but when the conquerors they conquered that region many of the people adopted Islam at the hands of the conquerors like the ancestors of Al IM ma his ancestors adopted Islam so they were ascribed to the tribes the Arab tribes upon whose hands they had adopted [Music] Islam from Al from the six books of Hadith Al IM Muslim was Arab in lineage the other five they were from that region Al IM bukari from a young age being born toward the end of the second century of Islam so this brings a question which many people ask they say why did it take over 200 years after the passing away of for the books of Hadith to be compiled this is a common objection people bring up to place doubt in the hearts of people with regard to the Blessed of wasam this question is sometimes posed by people who may have never read a book on Hadith literature but at other times by people who claim to be experts in Hadith the answer is very simple the Hadith of was preserved and memorized in his lifetime it was actually preserved in the lifetime of but in the early period prohibited the people from writing down the Hadith so they do not mix the Hadith with the Quran but towards the end in fact after the Conquering of Makkah aluk the year of the Conquering of Makkah which is the eth of hijam permitted a man who was from Yemen a sahabi known as Abu the man asked some questions wasam responded to him the man said will you write this down for me sallallah alaihi wasallam commanded the sahabah to write down his statement similarly he had a son known as abdd not to be mixed up with abdah remember the word Omar and are spelled with the same spelling but at end of they placed the letter W the letter Al to show the distinction between andd he was permitted by to write down the similarly ABD that is his name [Music] ABD who passed away in the year 59 hij 59 hij this sahabi he spent 3 years approximately Witham memorizing every Hadith that he would hear daily [Music] andam at one point had him fold a Shaw and placed the shaw on his chest after which he states he never forgot anything some of the and some of the orientalists attempt to claim that Abu why was he so excessive in narration Hadith they say he must have made up these Hadith because he narrates excessively but if you count the number of Hadith Abu relates the number of Hadith barely exceed 1,000 so they go over a th000 just over a th000 Hadith that would mean for every day this sahabi spent with he was memorizing one to two Hadith which is possible one to two Hadith it's not something Impossible on a daily basis then there were other companions who narrated like he had which is known as the truthful scroll sometimes he would attach it to his sword in that scroll he had numerous Hadith written down many times he would narrate those Hadith from the rightly guided and have the most number ofi meaning there was no conspiracy theory to suppress the Hadith of in fact if you study a work like the J of IM muham when you study his J you will find that he has numerous from and the students of there was no conspiracy to suppress the Hadith of but he had the Hadith written down similarly the companion that hosted when he relates the Hadith of the Conquering of Constantinople before he relates that Hadith the the the successor so you have who are known as the successors those who met the S and you have those who met those who met the [Music] sah and they are known as the P predecessors because said the best of generations is my generation and then those who come after them and then those who come after them some of them count this as the first 300 years of Al Islam mean 100 years so when he relates theith regarding the Conqueror of Constantinople who is aan Muhammad Al Fat which will occur hundreds of years later different to the Conquering of IMI which is a separate Conquest one of those conquests is recorded in the sun of IM Abu in the and the other one the one of Muhammad Alat is in the of but when relates thisi he opens a chest and he extracts a written document upon which he had written down theith of what does this entail it entails the Hadith were all written many of them were written or orally transmitted but then the the students of the they wrote down manuscripts also writing down the Hadith like whom like who is known as one of the senior he had a scroll upon which he would write down the Hadith of Abu Hur why is this important it is important because some of those manuscripts are still available today that the direct students of the companions they would write down the Hadith and their manuscripts are preserve but the question arises why did Al IM Al and the later generations like ABD the author of The ABD why did they feel the need to make larger collections the response is very simple they did this for specific purposes one of those objectives was to compile all those various manuscripts into one compilation so for instance he relates from Abu he may compile 100 from Abu but there will be other who compile 100 Hadith from another 100 from Malik the servant of the Prophet sallai wasallam for instance 100 Hadith from like this the number of Hadith exceed a th000 2,000 3,000 with various chains what happens in the later generations there were numerous chains back to those same companions so what do they decide to do compile all of these various Hadith but there was additional objectives one of them is to make specific type of collections for instance to compile the Hadith in accordance with the subjects which we became known as the according to the book of [Music] so like this in accordance with the subjects of what of similarly some of them attempted to compile this Hadith according to the names of the which became known as the the of which is the famous example of that is the of iMed and like this there were other types of collections like ofik this Malik is also the most authentic book after the Quran alongside with the of how between IM Malik Al IM Malik who was born in the year 90 H some say 93 between that time and passed away in the year 179 hij between Al IM Malik and the there is only one person only one person so Al IM Malik narrates from na who narrates from abdah [Music] this is known as the golden chain because the chain is so pristine there are numerous other chains like there is the chain of the going down from the descendants of the B like like this the chain of Al IM Ahmed binal from Al IM muhamed from Al IM Malik from na from abdah how pristine is that chain so Al IM Malik he compiled his book which is known as theik the trodden path why is it known as the trodden path because he tread the path of in compiling the of of course there are narrations of the M like the when we say the mik most of the time it refers to the narration of Y bin Al then IM Al and his generation the likes of IM Muslim and others their purpose additional to what I have mentioned was also to have a strict criteria to compile some of the authentic Hadith in accordance with their strict criteria does this mean that they compiled all the authentic Hadith the answer is no they just had a strict criteria what is that strict criteria for instance if there are two contemporary narrators then it is essential for them to have met and them to contemporary narrators having met must be established so Al IM Al had that stringent criteria but from a young age being born in the year4 hij the famous story is that at one point when his father had passed away his father was also a scholar of Hadith so his father is he had met IM Malik he had narrated Hadith from Al IM Malik so Al IM alari he grew up as an orphan but as a child he lost his eyesight and his mother Saw s ibraim who gave her the Glad Tidings of the eyesight returning and the eyesight returned but Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala had given this child a prodigious memory unmatched amongst the generations of throughout the ages that by the time he was past the age of 10 he was already correcting some of the scholars of Hadith when they would make mistakes in the the dates of birth bir and the dates of death or the names making mistakes with regard to the names of the narrators at that time some of the scholars of Hadith they said we have met a young man young child who has memorized over 70,000 Hadith so some of them went and questioned him they said have you memorized 70,000 Hadith he said I have memorized more and I also have memorized the names of most of the narrators I have memorized their dates of birth their dates of death the towns they came from the sh that they met the scholars of Hadith in that time they would sit in a mjus and dictate the Hadith so when they utilize words like these type of statements some of the scholars of Hadith they would read the manuscript to the teacher sometimes the teacher would bring out the manuscript and read the manuscript to the students would not make notes at this young age at one point many of the fellow classmates they objected to him not making notes when they pressed him on this issue IM recited the entire of the past weeks from his memory the entire and the the texts of the Hadith that was in his teenage years by the age of 18 IM alar he had gone ha with his brother and mother and they went back to Bk Al IM alar he stayed in the hij remember in the hij you had great from like SU Su was the scholar of of the he had passed away by the year 198 do not get mixed up with su he passed away in the year 161 hij and he was from Alfa and was a contemporary of Al IM who passed away in the year 15 he himself had over a, Al so some people attempt to weaken the pseudo salais pseudo salafis not real salafis They Don't Really follow these misguided people on YouTube the likes of Ali da the likes of shami these type of guys when you young people watch their videos be careful of these toxic information they spew wahabi da based in the teachings of Muhammad abdah who was a who declared they deem us as Grave worshippers as if we got Graves and we worship Graves so they attempt sometimes to weaken Al IM Abu hanifah this sh he even disparages Al imik because of the story that a man came to Al IM Malik and asked 40 questions and when he asked 40 questions to the majority of the questions Al IM Malik said I do not know the man said what shall I tell the people when I go back shall I say the Great Malik didn't know Al IM Malik said yes tell them that Malik didn't know but what was that do you think the man was ask asking questions like the of no it was deep questions the types of questions that relate to questions that were technical not common questions that this J in High Park May deal with or is unable to deal with on a daily basis so they disparaged imif but when im went into the hij he resided in a Masid which in a region where there is a Masid today that Masid is known as because the otan califate the Sunni caliphate the movement of Muhammad bin ABD [Music] declared the ottoman caliphate as being so we have the same AA as the ottoman caliphate we have the samea asan our goes back to it goes back to it goes back to but the movement of Muhammad bin Abdul wahab they declared the otoman caliphate as being KU and mus po because they cannot make a distinction between actions and belief something being or or they cannot make those distinctions they declare everything because of their ignorance when Al IM resided in Al he the Ottomans what did they do later they constructed a Masid at that site to preserve the site because they would give importance to every site associated with the the and [Music] the at the age of 18 He compiled his famous book which is known as a and he would sit in the the of the Prophet Sall alaih wasallam what is the the is the garden why because [Music] said and in another wording was informed by Allah subhanahu wa taala where he would be buried whatever is between my grave and my member my member is a garden from The Gardens of paradise also said Allah has cursed the Jews and the Christians because they have taken the graves of the as they worship the graves of the prophets do worship the grave of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam the answer is no because within the time of the and in fact in the time of they constructed a barrier in front of the grave ofam and the the chamber ofam was added into what is the you recite the chapter Quran the chambers all the various rooms the chamber is the chamber in [Music] which resided she states she saw in a dream a moon falling into her lap meaning the burial of great Personalities in that chamber three great personalities [Music] and so that chamber was added into the in the time of and the youngest it became of the in the time of the sahab that the Chamber of the Prophet Sall alaih wasallam can be included in the Masjid even though it is covered with a barrier so we do not pray in front of the we do not pray towards the grave because there is a barrier it was only after a an innovator known as a man of innovation that he claimed that the Chamber of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam should be taken out of this man known as these are the type of characters shami and Ali and these hi Park characters who they promote muhamd but we will stick to Al IM Al IM bukari sat between the with the between the grave and the mimber and he would write down his and he says the light of the Moon the full moon through the light of the full moon he was able to observe his Pages later on when he would compile his that's the full title of when he compiled this book he States the This was later in his life it took him 16 years to compile the 16 years when he would write down the what is theim if you open Sahari you find chapter headings those are known as he states he wrote all those also and whenever he would compile whenever he would write down a Hadith in his compilation he would bathe himself and pray two cycles now some of the people who attempt to place doubt in the of imari from the the modernists from various groups they say how can he have done so many B themselves so many times and pray two when there are over 7,000 Hadi Inari that would mean he had done 7,000 7 14,000 how do you answer these objections ostensibly sometimes these objections may sound very reasonable but when you break them break them down you will realize they are not so reasonable because contains repetition of Hadith when you cut down the repetition it is less than 3,000 just over 2,000 over 2,000 Hadith after rep repetition is removed when you look at the number of years which is what 16 years how many days in 16 years in a year there is 365 days 365 * 16 365 * 10 first you get 3,650 days then you do 6 * 365 is what 5 840 yes 5,840 days from 5,840 days just over 2,000 days are the days in where he did bathed himself and prayed two so it is possible because they say how is this possible but that is how you answer that objection and this is how all the objections are when you young people go on to YouTube and you watch misguided people some of you watch misguided Christians some of you watch misguided atheists you listen to everyone who is misguided except the who are not misguided and then these doubts enter your mind you must know the following that those objections are very easily broken down when analyzed so any objection that is brought forth should not place you into doubt with regard to your dean so Al IM Al he compiled the in a period of 16 years and then within his lifetime over 90,000 people heard the audition of the every book of was revised three times in his lifetime so he revised three times in his lifetime similarly was revised three times in his lifetime but what type of people heard theah from him there are some misguided people who claim that Al IM alar only only relat from him is this correct the answer is no there are numerous narrators of sahkari from Al IM bukari but importance was given to certain Assan chains of narration some of those chains of narration are related in you check he mentions the narrators of sahkari like this the scholars of Hadith have recorded how many actually related the of IM but the book was must transmitted in his life time what proves this that when you read the J of while reading the you will find that Al IM himself had heard the of imari from IM bukari because throughout the and his book States I asked Muhammad who is Muhammad here IM Muhammad alari I asked him regarding this Hadith but he also makes reference to the imari that means the of imari was related to the likes of IM and then Al IM Abu Bakr [Music] Ahmed in his book he relates that over 9,000 people related theah of IM bukari or heard the auditioning of in the lifetime of imk then some objections or the nature of some of the objections is that they say that some of the narrators of Al IM bukari they have been criticized so they will mention some of the narrators that have been actually criticized how do we respond to this point the answer is that [Music] in there are not many narrators who have not been criticized many narrators have been criticized but like who died in the year 1304 in his book he states that overall you look at the overall Judgment of a narrator and in his [Music] book that you look at the overall Judgment of a narrator so you can find in books of narrator criticism like you will find criticism of many narrators but what is the overall Judgment of that narrator that is what you look at the overall judgment if he think overall then he's trustworthy meaning overall there are sometimes some critical remarks regarding well-known narrators but the scholars of Hadith will look at the overall judgment this is a principle these are the type of principles that the modern salafi movement ignores when they attempt to weaken Hadith they misguide young people when sunnis relate Hadith they say that Hadith is weak and then they will misuse the principles of the principles of narrator accreditation and narrator criticism and they Place doubts in the minds of people regarding the Hadith misusing the principles [Music] similarly he will not place a Hadith of a narrator who has been criticized except that he does it with an additional Hadith from a different narrator meaning the same Hadith narrated from a different narrator so even those narrators who were criticized he places an additional Hadith in order to corroborate the previous Hadith subh some people they bring up the objection they say im who's the author of the sun they say he criticized 210 narrations in the sah of IM bukari and in the sah of IM [Music] Muslim some of them are in bukari some of them are in Muslim more are in the sah of IM Muslim they say how do you respond to the fact that he criticized 210 Hadith of course Al IM in his fat he has an introduction to his fat he died in the 852 hij from Egypt he has an introduction to theat which is commonly known [Music] as even though some have said the name is H but in this introduction ofat he responds to all the criticism but the summary of the response I will give you the summary is when when criticizes 210i in what this entails is that those 210 Hadith according to Al IM did not reach the high standard of bukari and Muslim and it does not entail that those 210 Hadith are weak and rejected because in fact those Hadith are authentic but according to IM they do not reach the high stringent criteria of the two books then IM he responds to every criticism Hadith by Hadith so those of you who are studying D Hadith what we refer to as D when you study the of IMI you should read the introduction of and read the response of every Hadith that he supplies the reader with then one final objection which can be summarized in two ways that is that sometimes in the we find wording which is disagreeable does that not Ina that the Hadith is weak weak because it is sh anomalous what does Al IM state in his in his poem regarding the that the Hadith cannot have sh it cannot have sh that a trustworthy narrator cannot oppose other trustworth narrators so in bukari sometimes we may find wordings phrases or words which are disagreeable like for instance the famous Hadith became angry and did not talk to until she passed away or sometimes you find a phrase or a word which is disagreeable how do we respond to this the response is very simple purposefully would Place those narrations in order to demonstrate what is known as to point out the weakness of the phrase or the wording what is the proof of that that many times when Al IM bukari repeats a he does not repeat the same Hadith with the same chain of narration he gives a different chain of narration for instance in his in the beginning of the he places the with the narration of Al hish who's theh further down in he places the same with a total different chain why does he do this in order to alert the reader with regard to a discrepancy in the wording so that means that sometimes for instance there is a Hadith of that the price of a camel the narrators cannot even agree on the price of the camel they differ and IM bukari places all those narrations in the why to alert the reader because the book is written for experts the book is written for experts to alert the reader that there is an an underlying fault in how the narrators have misinterpreted the exact number of the price of the camel of Ja so like this if you understood this point you will be able to respond to the objection that when people say why do we make why do we find sometimes a phrase or a word that is disagreeable the answer is the overall Hadith will be but the wording is that Al imari is pointing out to you additional to that that Al IM alkari some people object to specific Hadi within the of [Music] imari but those specific Hadith many times they misunderstand them for instance there is a Hadith that wasallam states that from 100 years from now everyone on Earth will be will perish will pass away some people when they read this they think the Hadith means 100 years from that time the world will finish but when you go back to theah of imari you find that Al IM bukari in that narration shows that this statement was said two months before the passing away ofam wasallam was addressing the sahabah that this generation in 100 years from now will pass away and that is exactly what happened because the last sahabi to pass away was in the year 110 exactly 100 years later so that means that many times people are reading the IM bukari and they are misunderstanding the statements and then criticizing sahkari like a famous example which I will mention to you which even the neocons Zionist neocons in America they mention many times with regard to the marriage of a at the age of n at the the nikah at the age of six but she moved in with wasallam at the age of nine so they say she was a young girl underage these are the type of objections it's inkari what they will not mention is that a say herself States as is recorded in the that young girls were deemed as women once they passed the age of puberty so that means in that Arabian society the age that young girls would move in with their husbands was the age of puberty when they pass the age of menes that was the norm in that Society so what neocons do is they quote this they say look this is found in the sah of IM bukari attempting to either place doubts in the minds of people with regard to or with regard to the of IM bukari itself of course there are many more things to be said regarding theah of IM bukari we ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to enable us to safeguard our IM enable us to learn knowledge of Al Quran and the F and the understanding
