Lecture on the Cell: The Basic Unit of Life
Introduction
The cell is considered the basic unit of life for all living beings.
All living organisms, including humans, start from a single cell.
Components of a Cell
Cell Membrane
Functions as the outer covering of the cell.
Similar to human skin, it allows certain substances to enter while keeping harmful substances out.
Mitochondria
Known as the "powerhouse of the cell."
Provides energy required by the cell.
Energy is created when digested food reacts with oxygen and mitochondria.
Ribosomes
Responsible for making proteins.
Proteins are crucial for repairing cell damage.
Nucleus
Referred to as the "brain of the cell."
Contains chromosomes which carry out instructions for the cell.
Cytoplasm
The space where all the components of the cell are located.
Primarily made up of water, allowing other components to "float" within it.
Lysosomes
Act as the cell's trash can.
Get rid of waste material and unwanted substances within the cell.
Trivia
The cell was first discovered by the scientist Robert Hooke.
Humans have more bacterial cells than human cells in their bodies.
