Cluster A: Odd, Reclusive, or Eccentric Behavior

  • Paranoid Personality Disorder
    • Overly distrustful and suspicious.
  • Schizoid Personality Disorder
    • Blunt affect, reclusive, difficulty forming relationships.
  • Schizotypal Personality Disorder
    • Bizarre speech and behavior, magical thinking, visual disturbances.
    • Similar to schizophrenia but with less intense/frequent psychotic episodes.

Cluster B: Impulsive and Dramatic Behavior

  • Most important for nursing exams.
  • Antisocial Personality Disorder
    • Violates social norms, history of physical violence, animal cruelty.
    • Aggressive, reckless, manipulative.
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
    • Intense mood swings, views things in extremes (splitting defense mechanism).
    • Unstable relationships, higher risk for self-harm and suicide.
    • Splitting and borderline personality disorder are closely linked.
  • Histrionic Personality Disorder
    • Likes being the center of attention, seductive, provocative.
    • Exaggerated emotions.
  • Narcissistic Personality Disorder
    • Grandiose sense of self, expects special treatment.
    • Lacks empathy, takes advantage of others.

Cluster C: Anxious or Fearful Behavior

  • Avoidant Personality Disorder
    • Low self-esteem, avoids social relationships due to fear of rejection.
  • Dependent Personality Disorder
    • Relies on others for decision-making, physical needs, self-worth.
    • Focused on pleasing others.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder
    • Inflexible, anxious, rule followers.
    • Perfectionists, difficulty forming relationships.
