Sustainable Practices for Resource Conservation

[Music] hi and welcome back free science lessons cold UK by the end of this video you should be able to describe ways to reduce the use of resources now humans produce a lot of materials that we need for modern life and I'm showing you selection here we've got glass metals such as copper on building materials we've also got plastics and clay ceramics such as cups and plates now all of these are produced from raw materials were Cho in limited supply and in some cases for example metals these are getting scarce raw materials are often obtained by quarrying or mining and these are very harmful to the environment for example quarrying produces large amounts of dust and it destroys habitats mining can release harmful chemicals into the environment it also takes a lot of energy to turn these raw materials into useful products and again this energy often comes from limited resources for example fossil fuels now it's very important that we try to reduce our need for raw materials for example by reusing or recycling this will help to save limited resources and energy it will also reduce the amount of waste that we produce and have a less harmful effect on the environment now some products such as glass bottles can simply be reused they can also be crushed and mounted to make different glass products for example jaws some products can be recycled for a different use for example plastic bottles these can be recycled to make fleece jackets and carpets now as we said before metals are very useful but limited resource to recycle metals we melt them and then we cast them into different products one of the problems is that different metals usually need to be separated before being recycled however that depends on the properties of the final product for example some scrap steel can be added to iron from a blast furnace and this reduces the amount of iron that we need to extract from iron ore remember you'll find plenty of questions on reducing the use of resources in my revision workbook and you can get that by clicking on the link above [Music]
