Embracing Personal Style in Midlife

Hello, and welcome back to the podcast where you are invited for lighthearted conversations about things that matter as you seek to live your most meaningful, beautiful, and joyful life. I'm your host, Dr. Edie Wadsworth, and I hope you enjoy your stay here at the House of Joy. Hey everybody! Welcome to House of Joy! We love you guys and we're so happy to be here. We're going to be talking about style today. Here's a funny thing. Okay. Because a few years back... I watched House of Gucci. Have you seen this show? No, but I've heard it. You've got to watch it. And after I watched that show, it was, I don't remember how long after that, that I recorded the podcast called House of Joy. And it made me... think like oh i love that phrasing like house of yeah i love that and you'll have to go back you guys we will link it below the original original podcast called house of joy there was just a podcast episode that i was assured house of joy inspired by house of gucci that became the inspiration for us to rebrand and call the whole podcast house of joy that's so crazy i didn't know it was inspired by house of gucci that you had an episode yeah called house of joy but i didn't know that that's what it was inspired by yeah and so we're gonna lighten it up today we're gonna talk about style we're gonna talk about specifically i'm gonna talk specifically about style in midlife and emmy is gonna give us she's gonna keep us hip y'all she's gonna tell us well what's so ironic going on and what i just told mom like something to consider with these podcasts is that i like have to pack all my stuff and we usually film a few every time I come so we're changing outfits and honestly like I'm not thinking when you're packing you're not thinking like oh bring the most the most stylish like revolutionary outfits for the podcast I'm like let me just get all my stuff together and honestly when we changed for this episode we hadn't decided we were going to record style I'm like I should have like dressed up a little more I know I'm literally in biker shorts and a t-shirt And as we talk about style, but I do think it's a good reminder that style is just who you are. And yes, outward depiction of who you are inside. Yeah. And it's so different for each person, obviously, which is why it's your personal style. Yes. But I do think I'm going through a period where I'm trying to better figure out like. what I gravitate toward just to make my life easier. So instead of having a million things in my closet, then I'm like, I love that, but I never wear it. I want to get to the point where I really love how everything in my closet fits, how it looks, whatever. And we're going to touch on that in this episode because I do think, I showed a picture of my closet this weekend on Instagram and I had people commenting like, oh my gosh, that's so inspiring. I need to clean out my closet. Like you don't really have. nearly as many clothes as I thought you would have of course I didn't show the whole thing and I didn't show that I have clothes in this downstairs closet too so I have plenty of clothes but I will say that I do try to keep it pared down to what I mostly wear although even as I say that it's so hypocritical because I could go in there and if you took everything out that I haven't worn in six months or a year you I could pair it down even more So we are going to talk a little bit about that, but also, yeah, your personal style, especially as you're aging and trying to figure out like what you like. And I shared this story with Emmy, but I think this bears repeating. I went somewhere this weekend and I left the house in an outfit that I had worn something similar like just a few weeks ago. And you commented like, oh my gosh, I never see you wear those pants. They're so cute. I got like 30 minutes there. Have you ever had this experience? And I was like, I hate this outfit. I hate how it feels. I hate how I feel in it. And I was just dissecting like, oh, that's interesting because I just wore basically this a few weeks ago and I felt good in it. So what is it about how I paired this together? And a couple of things came up. I don't normally wear like fitted pants and these pants were kind of fitted at the bottom and I didn't. wear wedges. I wore kind of flat shoes and it did not work well together. I paired a shirt with it because they're high-waisted pants that wasn't, yeah, it just didn't, it just didn't flow together. It was just so interesting because, yeah, it was so similar in a way to what I had on, but then it, I didn't love it together. But I think just being, being willing to be curious, like, you know, one of the ways that you could start with trying to figure out, Your personal style is think about the thing that you've recently had on where you're like when I wear this I feel so much like myself I feel confident I feel ready to go out I'm not worried about myself you know how sometimes you wear an outfit and you're ill-fitting and you're like you're self-conscious and that's what I was gonna say You know, I think this is a really fun, light-hearted topic, and it could mean, like, it doesn't really, it's not like it matters that much. Like, it doesn't really matter, but it kind of does. But I do think it does, and I think that the way that you present yourself outwardly is a reflection of how... It can go both ways like it's like the chicken or egg which came first like sometimes I think like you might not be feeling great but if you try to look your best and just make yourself feel comfortable you will automatically feel a little bit better and then I think the other way around too like how you look and you know how you also affects how you show up yes and so I think it is important and I think something I've learned especially with working from home it can be really hard to feel like there's any point in putting effort in what I look like every day and see I've been working from home long enough that I know it matters so I dress like I'm going to work and I am striving for that because I think that is has to do with why there is an appeal to getting up and going to a job every day because it's like forcing you to get up and like look presentable and fix yourself to a certain extent and it does affect your productivity like it literally does yeah and like the nitty-gritty of what we're going to talk about today probably doesn't matter as much but i do think that like every time i've been in a rut with like how i look It is something I can work on and when I do start finding things that I like and that fit better and that make me feel confident I show up differently in every space like okay even for example sorry no go ahead you off but this weekend we had a party with all of our friends and I think summer is a hard season to express my personal style because I don't really like short, like I'm very particular about shorts. Yeah, I mean I wear them, okay, you know, I wear them in the summer, but before this summer I didn't even wear them that much. Yeah, and so, but I also love being comfortable and that is just part of who I am. And so there's... it's really hard to find shorts that are like flattering comfortable easy and so we were having a birthday party and I just literally couldn't find anything that like it's also so hot outside so there's like logistically things that I can't wear something where I'm gonna be miserable yeah and so it did literally affect like I just was so much more stressed and rushed getting ready and it made me think like you know this does matter to me because I want to show up to a place and just not be worried about myself so I can have fun. Side note I heard one of my weight loss coach friends who said here's the key to buying shorts that you love buy a size up. I know and I think we'll have to get into this in our talk today but that is part of the problem with buying clothes. Is every single store and every single online store and every their sizing is so different. Yeah. And I'm just a lazy person. Like if I order something online and it's not the right size, it'd probably work if I ordered the better size. But then I'm not going to do that. I have to send it back. And then it's like, I'm not very good at stuff like that. Yeah. So. sizing is everything yeah and it's the most annoying part yeah and I think in general style I worked with a coach once who talked about how important style was to help change your self-image like if you want to become a certain person if you want to become more of who you are if you want to express yourself more in the world if you want to elevate your self-concept and maybe you've been a person who's always just dressed super casual, but you want to like elevate your style. That, that style is a huge way to really, um, become more of who you want to be in the world. And I think that is so true. I think one of the things that, um, for my own self is that, and I've done this in my, with my house, decorating my house too. And there's so many similarities between like. house style, house decor, and you know how you dress yourself is that um we're I think so many people are always asking like uh is this in style does this you know does this look okay or whatever and I have always found that even if it's not in style if it's something that I love that I feel confident in that makes me feel more of myself I don't really care necessarily about like oh is this particular thing kind of in right now as a matter of fact we just looked up a of what's in what's in trend like right now for 2024 and one of the things on the list was loafers and we looked at each other and went yeah i'm not wearing loafers yeah it's interesting because i am at the phase of life where i'm still very much like figuring out what i like and don't like but it's so interesting because the more like your style for example I love your style and there are bits and pieces of what you wear that I'm like I would wear. Yeah, but I'm also I wouldn't put it together like you would. Yeah, and that's okay. And you would pray your mind would go. Yeah, that doesn't really match or or I wouldn't like I am have been since I was little you can attest to this like the comfort and not even just like yeah you're way more into comfort or whatever like if things touch me the wrong way I am very sensitive about how things feel on me yeah and which goes into why I don't like wearing shorts really because like if you know you just all the things I'm very particular. And so I've had to learn and I still am like what, there are some trends and I'm still learning this because, you know, you want to be like with it, but I think the best thing you can do for your style is stop doing the trends that you, that you don't, you obviously wouldn't love. Like, yeah. I think that's the best thing. And there are some... I mean, another one of the things that was on that list is like big button downs. Now, I notice you and your friends will wear those more. I don't love the way that looks on me. I have kind of short legs. So if I wear something that's really boxy and, you know, too blousy, and then my legs are kind of cut off, like I just... For me, it doesn't work. But then every time I see somebody else wearing it, I'm like, Oh, that looks so cute. But then if I try to do it, I end up like I have one of those shirts and I end up tying it at the waist, you know, so that it doesn't hang the way probably it was designed to hang. And I think that's a good example of, you know, yeah, maybe you could do the trend, but maybe a little bit differently. Or for me, I just bow out of certain trends. This is where I think if you are a person and you're like lost on your style and you kind of want to. Figure it out, start over in a sense, but that doesn't always have to be what happens. I think the first and best place to start is figuring out the shapes of things that you like. That you like. What in your closet that you already do, what do you gravitate towards and why? Yes. Like, is it because of the fit? Well, then find more things that... fit like that. Yes. And on the contrary, here's something that I learned like a year and a half or two years ago, I hired a style coach because I was getting ready to lead my community in like a workshop on style. So I thought, oh my gosh, this will be fun. I'll hire a style coach. I'll learn what I can. And then I'll take some of those principles, you know, and teach my community life mentoring school. And so I did, and it was very informative, really the thing that Samantha Brown is her name she's amazing you can follow her on Instagram she's a New York stylist New York style coach New York City like the fancy kind and really what I learned what I took away from that was I'm pretty good with my own style like you know I kind of know what I like and what looks good on me I look back at pictures of you and there was a time where I feel like it doesn't match. Like, I know that as you get, you know, as you get older and as time goes on, trends change and we always think what we're wearing in the moment is cute. But I think for you, you have found what fits you the best. Yeah. What you know you're gonna like if you saw a picture of yourself. Like, what you know. I think you have really come to a place where you have a cohesive style. Yes. And one of the things that she helped me see And maybe you've noticed a difference since then. So this was a year and a half ago. She said, your silhouettes, like I had to show her. She did a closet audit where I showed her like my favorite outfits. And she said, you have kind of the same silhouettes. So if you branch out, get a different cut of jean, try a different length of skirt or dress so that it doesn't look like you're just basically wearing wearing the same thing every day and just switching out the parts. So I love what you're saying about figure out what you like and why. Like, oh, I like wide leg jeans, you know, on me or whatever. But also figuring out what's missing. Am I wearing the same silhouette? Do I kind of look the same every day? Well, I think you can get, and I think what's honestly I have been struggling with is You can get so comfortable with a certain thing. Yes, that's all you kind of wear that. Yeah, like I got in the habit of doing that with skinny jeans and I just switch out the shirt. Yeah, right for me. So I think it has so much to do with your body type. And that is where people I think can go wrong with the trends is because certain trends just aren't going to work. Yeah, you know, I mean, yes, wear whatever you want. But to feel, you know, your most comfortable best self. Yeah. For me, like for the most part, it's going to be a high-waisted pants. Yeah. For the most part. Yeah. And for the most part, like a little bit more wide leg. Wide leg, yep. You know, like those things I have grown to know. I'm actually in the point of my style where I'm trying to figure out what my favorite type of shirt, like what I feel like. the most comfortable in okay what I feel the most comfortable in is like a baggier thing but then I see myself and I don't see to me this is like quintessential Emmy a small little fitted tee yeah with either shorts or jeans or yeah and I think what I've had to learn is you know I am 23 and I've been pretty small my whole life, but as you get older, your body changes. You fill out a little. You fill out, you know, whatever happens, it doesn't matter. I think I had a really hard time letting go of, like, I would try to buy the same sizes. Yes. And every time I'm like, oh, my gosh, this looks horrible. But, like. making myself wrong for that even though like it's not a bad thing to buy a bigger size it makes you look better better yes you know it's not anything wrong with your body yeah and I think that's something I'm still like learning and it can be frustrating buying stuff online yeah um I saw this meme this was a couple months ago I loved it and it had a before and after picture and the before picture had like she was like squeezed into these jeans and there's a roll over that and she goes how I went from this to this and when you slid over to the next slide it said I bought the next size up literally Like we gotta let go and I'm talking to myself here like we gotta let go of feeling trapped by like oh I'm a size four and that's where I do think like as much as I hate shopping in person um sometimes that's helpful when you're kind of at the cusp of trying to figure out like okay I want to elevate my style like a lot of times like what should I get you should start in person yeah Because then after a while, I'm sure you go online and you can tell immediately. I mean, I make still, honestly, I still send 90% of what I get back. But when I do strike gold, I'm like, oh, that was worth it. Now I know I love the way that kind of thing fits or this kind of jean or, you know. Another thing you're not as into, I think, mostly because you just don't love to leave the house. But... One thing me and my friends, well, mostly me and Kyleena. Honestly, if there's someone who should be talking about style. We should have Kyleena on. We should have Kyleena on because I am way less qualified to be talking about this. But we have a place in our town that is, it's not a thrift store, but it's like people bring their clothes. Gently used clothes. Gently used clothes. Yeah. And that is a great way to test out certain things because. I found that I'll just, you know, when it's not as expensive, you can like grab things maybe you wouldn't normally grab. And I found that like a lot of things I wouldn't know I would have liked were from places like that because you can kind of experiment a little bit more. Yes. And that's helpful too. Like, you know, it's hard in college. We don't have or I'm out of college now, but I feel like I'm still grouped into that. Like, I'm not making a ton of money. Like. I want to feel good, but I also can't spend, you know, when you get older, you can start, you know, investing in pieces. So that's really helped me too, is like, not going crazy at those places like definitely try stuff on yeah but you can experiment a little bit more with things that you might yeah not have bought online and i think it can help you like i mean i talk about this a lot in my program and sometimes on the podcast about like when you're trying to reinvent yourself because i know that especially in midlife we can go through periods of time where we're like oh i don't feel like myself my body's betraying me And then as we get a little healthier and we're coming out of that, we're like, okay, so, you know, I feel like I'm ready for an up level, a little bit of a reinvention. I feel like I do that like every couple of years. And I think one of the ways that you can sort of allow yourself to do that without guilt is that. It does for a lot of people. I know it does impact me and how I show up to my life. So I can decide on purpose, like, okay, this thing that I like, for instance, skinny jeans. When I decided like, oh, yeah, I think I've had enough of that trend. I've worn that a lot. But it was hard when I first started branching out. It was hard wearing really high waisted. Now I love them. It was harder trying to figure out wider leg because they'd either be too long or too short. Like, I finally found like... a perfect not these I do like these that I have on but I do have a perfect pair of white jeans where I feel like oh the cut of these is so so good the where they hit the floor the way they fit around the waist how high they are and I think you have to be willing to experiment a little bit with that you know to figure out like what really works for you and what you feel your best in and that's another thing about trends that I don't like is that I think it's a completely normal human thing To not have always a cohesive style. Like, you can also just wear what you like. And that's your style. Exactly. And I think the more confidently you do that, and, you know, that is also determined by the fit of things and how they look. I think that is... what attracts people and I'm often trying to figure out how could I make this a little quirkier like yeah how could I but also like I look at other people's style and it's not what I would wear yeah but like it's so they're wearing it so yeah confidently and it looks fun and that whimsical yes yeah and I think getting to that point is how you feel in it yeah and that's why really do try to have things in my closet that I like the way they fit. I need to honestly go through my closet now because I'm thinking of like so many things that I have tried on over and over and over again and every time I'm like maybe if I like looked a little different like girl it's not for you're making you're making it worse for yourself for yourself get a different and it's funny because I'm getting ready to pack to go uh to Salt Lake City for a few days to the Young Living Convention and then to Minnesota. for a while for vacation. And so a lot of times when I'm packing is when I'm in there rummaging around, figuring out what I have and what I want to take and like to the convention, be wearing a lot of like cute dresses and all of that, but then also doing a lot of walking. So trying to figure out the shoes with the, you know, and I usually will end up doing a purge when I'm in there packing because it's like, Oh, I haven't really worn this for a long time. And I think it can be hard for people to do, like hard to let go of because, you know, you feel like, well, I bought this and I haven't really worn it that much. But what good are we doing ourselves keeping our closets full of stuff that we don't actually wear? Yeah. And so I'm excited because I'm getting ready to pack and it'll give me a chance to kind of look through it all. Yeah. I know. Packing is always humbling when you realize like, oh, I want to look cute all day. At least for me, because honestly, when I'm home, I try to care, but I sometimes don't. And then when I'm packing, I'm like, oh. Where's all the cute clothes that I want to take on this trip? Literally. Yeah, so I'm excited about that. I think it'll give us a chance. We'll just challenge you guys all to a closet declutter. And Emmy and I will both do it too so that we can, yeah, it helps you hone in, I think, on what you love that you already have. that fits well, that you feel like yourself in, that you feel. I mean, again, I think the point is take enough care of that so that once you're out and, you know, doing your thing, you don't have to worry about it. Yes. And I think that if you pay a little bit of attention, it's a little bit like self-care. Like, take care of yourself so that you don't have to worry about yourself. Yeah. Yeah, but it's worth it. Yeah. And I think we both came to, and we'll talk about some pieces that we both are loving right now, but I... Emmy and I both kind of came to the conclusion That, and I think a lot of stylists feel this way, is that it's really all in the accessories. And I know this is true for me because if I just look at my closet itself, I mean, I have some, I have a lot of colorful things. I have a lot of color. But, you know, I think it really is in the accessories. You even talked about how you do your hair, like, you talked about like, well, gosh, if my hair is done the way I really like it, I almost don't care. Yeah, I think, and that's how where everyone is so different, because I think you find your one thing. that you are willing to put in the most time into that can be different for everyone. Yeah. For me, like, okay, let's say I know I have a certain amount of time before I have to go somewhere. I know I'm going to be way more comfortable and confident. if my hair is done and see I'm just the opposite because I don't take that much time with hair but I will always have my face on well and makeup but like more than anything honestly for me is hair yeah and so and I will always have like a statement earring because I wear my hair up most of the time so I'll have a statement earring and my makeup done and then the rest yeah I've done I've tried to do it other ways where I focused more on Picking out like the perfect outfit and then I didn't have time to get my hair done the way I want it and I just end up not feeling good about any of it because my hair and makeup wasn't done. Yeah. But I think everyone is different and I think you just have to figure out like what about yourself do you want to accentuate the most? Yes. And take most of your time and effort On that and the rest really like to me I could have like my hair and makeup done and wear the most basic basic plain plain stuff and that's me. Yep. Another thing for me is shoes. like I care more probably about my shoes than like my shirt yeah but it's different for everybody and I think like you have to experiment yeah one of the things that they talked about in the article that we read was the importance of having good sneakers and it's funny because I tend to be one of those people that I wear tennis shoes when I work out and that's all like i don't have like i don't think growing up i literally did you ever see me just casually casually wear a tennis shoe no and so i've tried like when i was working with the stylist she said the same thing she goes show me your like your style type sneakers and i'm like oh don't have girl i literally don't own one but you might notice if you're watching on youtube today miss ed has on her red adidas so i think it just like for me having just a you white sneaker or even something fancy like golden goose those just didn't do it for me but when I started noticing these colorful sambas adidas sambas or whatever these are called I think these are a different kind um and they're colorful now that is a trend that I can get into so I'm excited I think I really want the green ones too because I wear green I just ordered a red and pink pair that I've seen a couple people that I follow have yeah and that's where it's like okay you get a cute colorful shoe yeah then that already elevates an outfit to wear like if you're wearing plain jeans and a plain top like if I have my accessories on yeah I feel great yeah you know another thing we were talking about with accessories and this is a something I saw on TikTok when I was still on TikTok but it's the sandwich theory yeah that a way to always pull together an outfit And make it feel like more cohesive if maybe you're experiencing with different colors or patterns. Like a way to make it cohesive is to have the same or similar color. Color or element. On the top and the bottom. Yeah. So like if you're wearing. I have that perfect example today. So I'm on my tomato red earrings. Yes. And my red Adidas. And there's different ways to do that. Like if you're wearing a colorful pair of pants like. maybe you could put on a hat that has that color. A little bit of that color, yeah. So I think if you're trying to, that's always something, honestly, I lean more towards like a plainer. yeah thing but I am trying to get into more patterns or patterns maybe not to your whole level like I don't know if I'll ever be there my sister asked today I was Emmy and I were getting our nails done I mean this is quintessential our personalities I got bright yellow and Emmy got no you're kind of fancy too blue purple so cute um but anyways we were talking about it and she So what are you wearing to convention? And I'm like, oh, you know, just outlandish ruffles and colors and prints and patterns. But that is like your, like you go into your closet and almost every shirt has some sort of like sleeve. Yeah, frill, ruffle, or pattern. Like if it doesn't have a sleeve, it has a cool color. If it doesn't have, I've actually heard that too. Tell me. Like. If you're not gonna have a pattern, have a bright color. If you're not gonna have a bright color, have a cool pattern. And always having one element that stands out or ties it together. Yeah. I love that. I mean, definitely. But to me, like, and everyone is really different. Like, I know a lot of people who could care less about their makeup and their hair, but they want their outfit. But their outfit needs to be on point. Yeah. Yeah. For me, and I think for you, too, like, jewelry, accessories. Jewelry, baby. That is really what I want to spend. A stack of bracelets. Yes. More money on. Cute earrings. A bunch of necklaces. Yeah. I'm definitely, definitely an accessories girl. I also think, like. Just allow yourself to like have something not work and learn from that. Like buy something or you know try something new. I think it always keeps this like, and I think I've always gotten this from you, like, you have this youthfulness about you because of how you choose to dress yourself. Yeah. Not even youthfulness, but this brightness and this like, and you've had to experiment in some sort of ways. And you've had to wear things that you might look back on and be like, oh, interesting choices, Miss Grady. And I think being willing to take a little criticism because people always have commented on me. my style and sometimes not in the best way right like I'm even sure Aunt Gina is probably sometimes you'll throw on an outfit what are you wearing girl yes and that is something like I need I think at the core of these you know style issues that I sometimes have it is out of like wondering what people people would think would think yes which brings me to such a great point you guys especially in this midlife range Haven't we done that enough? Haven't we worried enough about what people think? It's so funny because I noticed this at the gym. Everybody, most of the people at my gym, wear black and gray. I don't own any workout gear that color. Never really have. You'll see me. Literally, guys, this is so funny that you say this because we went to get our nails done and I just met mom there. And, I mean, I could see her out of the corner of my eye because she's literally wearing. literally bright pink shorts a yellow dot yellow sports bra yeah a light pink like jacket her shoes are a different color like you do not care to stand out that's for sure when i walked into the gym today he steve goes hey miss edie nice outfit yeah i'm not sure if that was nice outfit as in nice outfit or wow like wow that's a choice that is a choice But I've always been like that. When it's winter, I'm going to have on my bright puffer. I'm just going to. Maybe that's the secret to your joy. Doesn't matter the weather. Doesn't matter the time of year. She's wearing yellow. She's wearing bright pink. She's wearing red. yes she is I know I honestly it's funny because when I was younger you probably hated it I like even our house I was like what is this decoration like why is there so much random color pattern and like I it's just never you know never what I would never what I would have chosen and then I get older the older I get the more I think you kind of crave that like you know know to be fun and like okay life is hard life is hard as well like love your outfit love your outfit love your paint color love your quirky furniture or whatever that's where it's like as long as you know i think of aunt gina too because their family i love her style too she has a very traditional beautiful like her house is a drop dead gorgeous gorgeous and it's comforting and like they're they have black and white and neutrals and there's literally nothing wrong with that and it's always perfect so her and I think like the amount of effort you want to be putting in is up to you yeah but I think you know take the time for yourself to make sure you really love you love it and she loves that and I It's crazy because the first time that I saw their house, their new house, I was like, oh my gosh, it's so, I love it so much. Like I love the black trim and I love that there's so many things that I love about it. And there's a part of me that's like a little bit in my brain, like you should be more like that. Yeah. And it's funny because Tanner and Courtney's house is the same way. We were over there last weekend. It was so fun. Tanner made us hibachi like literally so good and their house is actually a lot like aunt gina and uncle mark's um very neutral everything is like clear you know cleaned off neutral all of this and tanner even said something about like oh if you decorated this house and i said yeah there would just be a lot more color and a lot more crazy quirky things that's just what i would do to it but i think you have to own your own desire and you know even when the trend and the pressure has been in every kind of style whether that's house style or personal style or whatever oh neutrals and you know black and all of that i think if that's not what you love and that's not what brings you joy then own that and just be willing to be different and yes you know i what i'm working on flag fly yes i am working on and I think I want to start challenging myself more. Like instead of looking online or looking to someone else to find what I like. Ask yourself, what do I like? Yeah. If I went on this site, what would I naturally gravitate toward? Yeah. Instead of like, I think to me, I like the idea of someone else just figuring that out for me. But then it ends up sometimes not working because I'm just picking it based on what that person. Yeah, and for me, the quirkier the better. So, you know, quirky colors, quirky combos, patterns that don't actually match, you know, like for me, the more of that the better, whereas for some people they would be like, that is so hideous, like that doesn't even match. I really wouldn't wear that. And I think you have to be willing to say, no, this is what I love. This brings me joy. Yes. You know, like, for instance, going to work out every day is not easy to do. But do I feel better in my bright yellows and pinks and reds? And yes. Yes, you do. So give me those bright colors and it inspires me. See, I'm actually, like, I feel the best when I'm wearing, like, something that feels, like, I like a black set. yes for working out yes what does you like a set of anything and i do love a set this is crazy because this is another like aunt gina maybe courtney and tanner too i'm not sure but like for instance when i would go buy furniture i would never in a million years buy a set of furniture this is all coming together i would be like can i just buy that sofa i don't want any of this stuff that goes with it and then over here could i get this chair whereas i think they would both be more like no i'll have that set of things i would never in a million years do that so although i am starting to love a set so i'm loving like my spanx air essentials you know the sweatsuit thing i'm loving that i'm loving my daily drills you are yellow set yes so much so I am loving a set more but um in general I would be a person that would be like no let me mix and match it myself figure this out myself yeah I think for the most part I am definitely like I lean more towards like a more plain a little bit more tomboyish type of style I like feeling comfortable and I like looking cool And whatever that means to me, I do think I like, I'm trying to step out of my box. And see, here's what's cool about that. You have a very curvy figure. So I think even a tomboy style looks so girly on you because your figure is so cute and so girly. I have like a 12 year old boy, straight body. I'm not curvy like that. So I add curves with my little ruffles at the sleeve or the shoulder. Earlier today I had on like a puff sleeve little top that was so cute. So for me, that's kind of how I add a little bit of movement where, you know, without those just natural gifts from God of all that curviness that you have, it allows me to add some curve, which I love. It's very interesting. I do think like, um, doing this podcast and like seeing myself more and. Noticing how much effort, like I think it is a goal of mine to Start dressing every day, whether that be like, I mean, I get ready every day. I always do a little bit of makeup. I always feel, I like to feel put together, but I don't always put on like a particular outfit, especially if I'm working out. But I do have a goal of like, because I think that's the only way you can figure out your style. Like for me right now, the only times I dress up really are like, okay, if I'm going on a date, if I'm going to hang out with my friends somewhere. And that's like getting few and far between when you're so busy. Yeah. So then it's like, oh, I go to put on an outfit at this one thing and I'm like, what do I even like? Yeah. So I think it's all about experimenting. And I think sometimes I look back at something I put on and I'm like, oh, gosh, that was not it. But, you know, I had to wear that to know it. Yes. So, yeah, I had to wear my little outfit this weekend at 30 minutes later. I'm like, oh. This is not to know you are like, you know, I would look at you and I'm like, you have your style figured out and you still, yeah, I'm still learning. Yeah, you're still learning. Yeah. And so I think just be willing to like what you like, be inspired by what you're inspired with, pay enough attention to it so that then you can forget about yourself and be doing what you're doing. You're not worried the whole time about something that's ill fitting or something that doesn't look right or, you know, all of that. I think it's worth paying some attention to. Because I do think it affects how we show up and definitely, you know, your confidence level, but definitely be willing to figure out for yourself, no matter what stage of life you're in, not just like, what do I love and what is my style, but where do I want to go with that? What do I want it to be? How is it evolving? You know, what pieces could I add? That's one of the things that when I was working with Samantha that we talked about is kind of pieces that I was missing one of them which was good sneakers and looking here you guys miss ed has some cute red sneakers for that yep um and asking yourself like okay so with your wardrobe are you missing a great you know pair of jeans that fit amazing that you love that you could put on anytime you know and feel like yourself are you missing accessories you know where that could be a huge part of like your style it's just the accessories that you choose you So I definitely think it's worth paying attention to and it's so fun like so many things about life are serious and this can just be something that's fun and that's why we wanted to do this podcast is because like most of the time we are talking about these like really serious things deeper things deeper things yeah but this is just as important to your yeah i mean if it is important i mean it's not important to some people and that's okay yeah but i think know yourself and if you have an itch to like try something new or like expand your style yeah you should do it for sure i think that there's no rules and you can just have fun with it. Yes. So as we close out, let's talk about some specific things that we're loving. Yes. We'll talk about specific things, but also we are going to put together a little short, like, yes, we actually have it. We'll, we'll give instructions. Um, we'll maybe add a little thing to the front once we get it done, but we'll add instructions. We're going to send you a style guide, you guys. So we're excited about that. But, okay, you go first. What are a few things that our must-haves can't live without in your current style era? Yeah. Okay. I would say one thing that... I have really been loving for probably the past two years is my Parker thatch stuff. It's, we talked about this on one podcast episode. Um, it tends to be a little more expensive, but it's kind of chunky gold plated jewelry. Um, and I've just collected some pieces over time. They also have really cute bags and it's great for a birthday gift Christmas. It's kind of like a special occasion gift. Okay. But I think to me. There, I, it's funny because, especially when I'm getting ready to travel, I don't wear them all the time on a daily basis. But usually if I'm getting, you know, coaching or something like that, I might put it on. But definitely when I'm getting ready to travel, there's nothing that makes me feel more like myself. Than having your things. Than having my things, which is like this sort of chunky jewelry, statement earrings, like to me. Those are the things that make me feel like myself. So I would say my Parker Thatch collection. I love that. Lately, I've been loving, and I actually don't really have much of it going on, but I've been dreaming about making the perfect necklace combination to wear. I just feel like if you have layers of necklaces, it automatically... It's kind of elevated. Elevates whatever you're wearing. Yep. Either way. Thank you for my cowboy boot necklace that you gave me because it's been part of my necklace collection. It is. So I do think unfortunately like for me it's worth it to buy better quality jewelry just because I know I'm going to want to wear it and I know that's something I want to collect. So it takes a little bit longer when you're my age and I'm not in a rush to just I can't buy just a million things. I want that is something that I'm working on is like piece by piece yeah getting together um like a specific jewelry light kind of layered necklace yes thing I love it so another thing that I will add on to that is mom's not into rings but I really am as much I have now I do have my rings that I travel with when I'm going to conferences or whatever that I put on. But yours are more like statement. Yeah, statement rings. Yeah. One thing that I can't. Oh, I want this one so bad. Tell them about your. Yeah. So there's a brand called Spinelli. I don't know actually the name because I don't actually own one of them, but it's always something I've had my eye on. And it's a dupe, right? This is a Etsy dupe and it's pretty good. I'll link the brand I got it from. it is gold plated and it's like around a hundred dollars so i mean it's still pretty i mean it's pricey but compared to the real ones not really yeah and um it's it wears down a little bit but it doesn't like it doesn't turn your fingers i definitely think i might get one i think you should but i wear it every day you She's going to try it on. She's going to try it on. Here. Thank you. I literally wear it every single day. And I've gotten to the point where, like, I literally can't live without it. Oh, it's so cute. And the little, the rings, do you play with them? Yes. It's like a fidget. It's a fidget spinner. Which is great for me. Yeah, I'm getting that. That's so cute. And I'll give you the link, too. Thank you. And it's fun to also, like, for me, I would way rather buy myself an expensive piece of jewelry than... like an expensive shirt or something yeah or like a bag yeah but in my mind I'm like okay one day if I like hit these goals when I'm older like maybe I will buy myself the real deal yeah I always like to have you know something to strive for I love it um okay I'm trying to think where do I want to go next oh I know where I want to go Second set of things that I've been loving for the last few months is my skims. So you have been. I have been loving my skims. Which, by the way, I did not know was Kim Kardashian's line. Emmy had to inform me of that. She's like, you were so on it, you're like, is that skims? and I'm like yeah so my little like what would you call that that little terry french terry jacket that I wear is it french terry I think on the inside anyways it's a little jacket they have um like little fitted tees or tanks that I like to wear to the gym um I love their underwear yeah I'm a skims girl now okay so let me think of something else that I have been loving I mean, always for me is a good hat. You are so cute in a hat. um i do love a hat i do think like i'm particular about what outfits i'll wear hats with so the house of joy hat by the way that you designed literally goes with everything i want to wear it every day all summer almost every day we need to figure out i'm gonna have to look into how we could you know we need to restock the shop on the shop but um we at some point want to get that out and maybe at some point do like a different color or something like that but yeah that hat in particular fit really well I am a very particular person about fit like I said and so cute is it LA hat that you have yeah like a ball cap it's like Amazon it's just like the yeah sports a sports ball yeah sports ball cap I love those um but I think whenever I feel like an outfit needs a pop of color or I don't like my hair or like I said my hair always determines like how I really feel about how I look so if if my hair feels crazy throwing on a hat um I think that can really be a fun way to change up an outfit which is not revolutionary but I do love hat yeah I want to say this because it's not technically style but it kind of is and we talked about this earlier when you've got that like summer sun kissed glow it almost doesn't matter what else you guys so get out in the sun and get some sun but also we've been using what's the one that we use this self tanning that we've used all summer that's so fantastic by nature beauty by nature you guys i haven't used it because i've been outside here a lot but yeah that stuff is awesome i just used it again and then i was out we were surfing this weekend so i was out a little bit too and i love the sort of sun kiss seriously you're in a rut put on some fake tan. You're feeling sad, put on some fake tan. You're feeling a little overweight, put on some fake tan. I swear all of your problems literally start crumbling away. I think you learned this life lesson from your mother. Literally. Yeah, there's nothing quite like having a glow to you and that's a fact. I will say too, and I know we've talked about this plenty of times and linked it before, but I'm gonna tell you right now. that will lead a skin food on my face morning and night has been the biggest game changer for me i feel like literally it makes me glow yeah i'm having my own like skin journey right now so sometimes i do feel like that one is when you have like acne prone yeah it probably isn't the best yeah it's kind of greasy not like in a bad way like it you It's very moisturizing, but sometimes I do feel like it's too much for me, but... Yeah, with my drier middle-aged skin, it is so fantastic. Yeah, I think if you don't have... And I don't even know if that's a fact, but for me it feels sometimes a little bit too oily. Yeah. Because, like, I have areas that are very sensitive to... whatever I put on them. Yeah. And I will say too, that as far as like things that I've been loving lately is just a lot of bright color. I was in the mall shopping before we had love is magic. And I just noticed there's a lot of like fluorescent yellow, like really bright pink, tomato red. And I am all about all of those colors. You sure are. literally just look in her closet red pink bright yellow but to be fair like with your skin tone it works good it works and i think that's another thing i've never gotten um my colors done um you haven't either i don't think but i don't think you need 25 30 years but i do think that also has a lot to do with how you feel yeah like especially in pictures and stuff like if you certain colors just pop off more yeah so ask yourself in what colors do i feel most alive where do i do i feel like i brighten up where i feel more like myself and i think paying attention to that can really help and i do notice that in those colors i you are the most yourself i am the most edie wadsworth ever if i am in some kind of fluorescent bright yumminess yes so true anything else you can think of in that we should tell the people we're loving i'm gonna link to people keep asking me and we put them in my amazon store so we'll link our amazon store but i've been wearing really bright the big bright glasses the big bright readers iconic for red pink and people do ask a lot yeah the links for that so we definitely will link and again accessories right yeah and i think that just goes into like I do think you just have to be willing to sometimes try things. Like, I have those green glasses and I don't wear them all the time, but if I want a little extra zhuzh to an outfit, that's an easy way. You don't even have to do anything. You don't have to change. You don't have to, you know, it already just does that itself. Yes. But yeah, I think this should be a challenge to you to like, you know, try something new. spice it up it doesn't really matter what anyone thinks like maybe your husband is like what did you just put on or you know i think that you should just go for it go for it girl life is too short yeah we've been too long you know trying to worry about what everybody else thinks you start a new trend in your own circle just decide that use trends if you want but also ignore them yeah for the most part they go they come and they go Listen, honestly, half the things on the list that we're supposedly in for 2024, I'm like, nah. And half the things I'm like, oh, yeah, I could get into that. So, yeah, use it to serve you. Use it to help you create more of your own style, to help you show up as more of yourself in this world. We need more of you. We need more of your light. We need more of your goodness. Yeah. And we're all like at the end of the day, even the people that you see who you think are like, like for you, for you, like. I'm sure people look at your style and they're like, dang, she's just got it. She figured it out. Like most of those people do not feel that way all the time. And it's okay. Just keep working at it. Like no one has it figured out. Don't hold other people to what you, you know. Yeah. Don't want to be held to yourself. Everyone can change as many times as they want. Yep. Keep reinventing yourself. All right. Well, we love you so much. That was a fun one. Thank you for joining us today. This was fun to chat with you about style. Come over to Instagram, to House of Joy, and give us some feedback. What are you loving right now? Yes. Send us the links for everything you're loving. Please send us the links, even though you might not have found them in the show notes. No, I'm just kidding. We're going to link everything, I promise. Yeah. We'll link. the stuff we talked about today for you. You share with us what you're loving and we will all uplevel our style so that we can uplevel ourselves and show up in this world the way we want. Yes. Okay. Love you so much. See you next time. Bye.
