Understanding Community Engagement and Action

For the fifth lesson of Community Engagement, Solidarity, and Citizenship of Humanities and Social Science Trans in Senior High School, we will talk about community action. So, these are our competencies and these are lesson objectives. Okay, before we start with the discussion, Mayiksing activity muna tayo. So I want you to identify each statement and the choices are in the box. So let's start with the first item. The partnership between two parties, academic institution and local communities for mutual benefits and it is characterized by reciprocal relations. So that's letter. D. Community Engagement Number 2. It is called as the membership of a citizen in a political society. The answer is letter A. Citizenship Number 3. It is about regarding our fellow human beings justify and respecting who they are as persons. That's B. Solidarity And last number four, it is a manifestation of a collective grasp and ownership of a situation that generally has an effect on them. Answer is letter C, community actions. Okay, let's talk about community actions. So, it says, See that? It is a manifestation of a collective grasp and ownership of a situation that generally has an effect on them. So in the part of our lesson today, our subject is community engagement, solidarity, and citizenship. This subject will help people or students like you understand better why citizens need to move, need to be mobile. It means that, We can't just sit down. We are tasked as a citizen to do something about our nation. And in our case, we are doing this to build our nation. Because building our nation will build our identity. So what else? Community action involves a community of people who are experiencing the same situation. Tend to connect with each other and pursue a common goal and action. So parang yung mga tao na nakaka-relate sa isa't isa, kumbaga may pare-parehong hugot sa mga social issues, they tend to get a common denominator. At dun nag-i-start yung desire to do something about these issues. And by doing so, you are doing community action. So there are different ingredients of community action. Number one, the movement or community action has a common context. Meaning, you both visualize, you both have the same skills, you both want to do. So that's building a common lens. The second is common experience. You both should have the same sentiment. If you want to do something about certain social issues, you both should have the same attitude. People encounter a comparable experience individually and collectively. And we can give our take into different issues if we feel the same. Number three, common understanding of an issue. People have more or less a similar view of the issue at hand. Like a lot of issues in our country. Like... In health, in pandemic, in the waste, I'm sad, in the waste of vaccines, in the waste of testing kits that reached millions of dollars. So sometimes you can't question those who are asking and protesting against anyone who should answer the problem. Because those money... that should be given to the right person. servisyo ay parabagang nasayang at natapon lamang. So may mga magtatanggol sa bahagi naman ng mga nanonungkulan. So hindi mo pwedeng pagsamahin yung against at saka pro sa government because they do not have the same or common understanding of a certain issue. Another ingredient is common analysis. People went through a process of analyzing the issue and may have similar take on the issue partly or in a whole. It means that it's understanding of the issue on a certain perspective based on core values and principles. So this is a bit technical. We can take the common analysis on the technical side. So we have some data there. We can also take it on a more emotional side. Yes. sa totoo lang mas madaming Pilipino ang mas nag-aalab ang damdamin. Kaya parang yung iba namimis-inform because they do not want to study first the data. So hindi naman natin i-invalidate yung ganong pananaw. Pero sana lang mas tignan natin ng focus. Hindi lang yung emotion natin but also the data that we have. Because by doing so, We come to agree into an issue that will really lead a person to do something or to act on it. Another ingredient is unacceptable standards. So people usually establish a minimum standard in undertaking an action together. It's a process of reaching compromises, setting minimum standards, and targeting bottom lines. Those who are in community action or those people who are into activism, not all of them always agree with each other. There are conflicts, there are misunderstandings. But how do they overcome the conflicts? So they set a compromise. They have standards. They bargain, they give and take until they can reach a consensus that, okay, we're here, this is what we're going to fight for, this is what we're going to push, this is what we want to do. Not all of that always agree. On the part of the government, not all leaders agree with everyone. And the same goes for the part of activists. Not all members of a group agree with each other. But, Since they are moving into one goal, they set aside their personal differences because they need to attain and they need to act into something that is more pressing than their sentiments. It is very important in community action to mobilize the community because you cannot say that there is community action if the members of that community are not moving. That's why Mobility of mobilization or mobility of the community is really important. So this phase is the step of gathering people, meeting regularly, discussing something like the problems and the things that they will do or the projects or steps that they'll implement on how to implement it and how to get results from it. So kasama dito yung pag-identify kung sino yung mga leaders. How will the structure of the community be? And how will they run their process from start to finish? Part of mobilizing the community is organizing. If the leaders of the community action don't organize, this group will fail. So organization is the bolt-in phase wherein All the resources, materials, material or non-material, process or product, soft or hard technology, and physical and spiritual are mapped out and consolidated. So, sa bahagi ito ng pagsisimula ng community action, so dito nilalatag lahat, lahat ng kakailanganin, gagamitin, gagawin, at susundin. So that's organization. Dito rin malalaman kung anong nawawala, ano ang wala, ano ang meron, ano ang kalakasan, ang kahinaan, ang kakulangan. So, in this part, the foundation of a community action should be strengthened so that while executing the process, it is systematic and organized to reach a certain goal. By doing so, you are needing to be educated. For example, you are part of an active group. Of course, you need to be educated. And education is not only on books. It also includes skills. So you need to enhance your skills. For example, it will require you to have a speaking engagement. You're not good at speaking to the public. So you train yourself. Another thing, it will require you to talk to people. But you are an introvert person. So you take... classes perhaps or ways to improve your interpersonal skills. Another thing, you do not know this data. You do not know the community that you will go to. So you research on it. So in education, you are basically enhancing your skills, your knowledge, and everything so that you will have a base. So that you will have a plan. You will not go to war without an armor. But the process of reaching the level of community that pursues an advocacy together is not that easy. So it's not that easy to get everything into moving to a certain objective or goal. Not everything is 100% participative. Some are different in their views. Yung iba dyan, magkakaiba ng experiences, magkakaiba ng hugot na or pinanggagalingan. At magkakaiba dyan ay may iba-ibang values, principles, and backgrounds. So kung ganun yung problema, dapat may mga agents of communities that will facilitate the process or building the organization strong. So... What are the qualities of the agents of communities? Number one, they should know the issue. You will not put leaders or people who don't know the issue. It will be left to people who are more knowledgeable in what they want to do in this community activity, this activist or group. And other qualities that the person must... Analyze the issue from different perspective. Why? Because each member has a different view. So, he needs to know what the view of A, B, C, and D is. And he will build a consensus so that the perspectives will be in one focus. Number 3, identify and get to know the relevant community structures and the system. Like what I mentioned earlier, Kabahagi na organization, you are to know yung mga tao na gusto nyong pagdalahan ng activity or gusto nyong gawin. Number four, identify and get to know the players. Sino, pag sinabi nating players, sino ang mga kabahagi? Sino ang mga magiging kabahagi nitong movement or community action na gagawin? Number five, Identify community actors. So, who are the power actors? Who will lead? Who will follow? Trace the connections. Connections are very important. On a good side, connections are very important. Because this will build network. And when you have a network, you can tap someone. of organizations that can help your advocacy. For example, you are lacking of let's say food resources but you have a community or a network who are willing to donate foods. So the problem was solved to that. Another, you are lacking into moving a large group of people from one place to another. but you have a community or you have a connection let's say to the local government so you can say That's to transport from one place to another the members of your group and other things. Connections really work. But what I'm trying to say is that connections that are legal are good. But the connections that are under the table, we don't want them. And this is not on the list but I added it, no people's emotion. I'll just relate this to number 2 to their perspectives but it's important that there's a way for power actors to get emotional because if you know how to read people's emotion you have the ability to adjust on a maybe on a case to case basis or you know how to approach other people and one mahusay na tao na magaling bumasa ng tao ay magaling makipag-interact with people. So forms of community action, first is community engagement. So there must be active collaboration, builds on resources, skills, and expertise, and knowledge of the campus and community. improves the quality of life in the communities and it is in a manner that is consistent with campus mission so it comes from AUN it follows the definition given by the IUPUI so that is the four part definition of community engagement so if people want people to be engaged and they will engage their community This is what they should see in what they are doing. Citizenship, it denotes membership of a citizen in a local society. What citizenship means, this is the allegiance or the sharing, the giving of oneself of a member to a political entity like the state. So we are Filipino citizen so our citizenship is our allegiance to the Philippine government that's a mutual relationship in a way why as a citizen tayo ay may karapatan i binibigay ng estado sa atin ang madaming karapatan at protection para tayo ay mabuhay ng mapayapa at bilang citizen naman Our allegiance to our state is in accordance with the laws that are implemented here. Solidarity means it's about regarding our fellow human beings, justify and respecting who they are as a person. So solidarity is a deeper understanding of unity. It goes beyond unity. It goes beyond... It goes beyond interaction. It's a deeper sense of humanity, being a human being. And it's rooted into respecting others no matter what they are, no matter who they are, no matter where they come from. So it's solidarity person is in connection with other people, with the society, and with the environment. It's more than that. It's more than connection. It's being connected to them and understanding them and respecting them and seeing them equally as you are. You are not above anyone and anybody is not above to you as well. So parang meron certain idea or principle of equality and equity. when it comes with solidarity or pagkakaisa. That's one. Now for my students, your instruction is to determine your level of awareness and understanding of community action, forms of community action, and community dynamics. Answer the following questions. So that's your first task. Your second task is to Make a short essay. So the situation is as a Filipino citizen, the individual person is a member of the basic institution which are family, church, then school, and government. Being a senior high school student, you are critically analyzed by community action in terms of the structures and processes in implications for global citizenship. Now, Limits of five sentences but you can do more than five sentences. How can you as a citizen be actively involved in community action especially in the now normal or during the pandemic? So, you can look around. What are the policies of your community regarding the now normal? It can be in education, it can be in health. Pwede sa security, pwede sa safety. Any project or policy na ginagawa ng inyong community. And how can you, as a citizen, be actively involved? So, ito ang ating scoring rubric para sa task na ito. So, see you sa susunod na lesson. Magandang araw sa inyong lahat at maraming salamat.
