Construction of DC Generator

Introduction

  • A DC Generator converts mechanical energy into DC electrical energy.
  • Understanding its construction and assembly aids in comprehending its operation.

Key Components

Stator Magnets

  • Electromagnets arranged so that adjacent poles have opposite polarity.
  • Function: Produce the magnetic field.

Armature

  • System of conductors or coil rotating on supported bearings.
  • Consists of several parts:
    • Armature Core: Made of high permeability thin silicon steel laminations with slots on the periphery to carry windings.
    • Armature Winding: Copper wires wound over the core.

Commutator

  • Cylindrical and made of copper.
  • Two basic functions:
    1. Collecting current from the armature conductors.
    2. Converting alternating current of the armature to unidirectional current in the external circuit with the help of brushes.

Brushes

  • Made of carbon or graphite.
  • Function: Collect current from moving commutator.

Shaft

  • Rotating part of the DC motor.
  • Final mechanical energy output obtained here.
  • Armature is mounted over the shaft.

Assembly of DC Generator

  • Visualize the assembly through animation or diagrams.
