do you get confused in the cycle of inhalation to controlled exhalation support while you sing many singers say they can only concentrate on one thing at a time if they do more everything else goes out the window well my friends good singers must be excellent multi-taskers today you're going to learn how to multitask in your breathing and singing welcome back to another edition of victoria's victoria's vocal tips 30 years of teaching voice 42 years of studying voice all different styles i take serious vocal technique and make it simple and fun yes you cannot think of 50 things at once while you sing but it is possible to think of two maybe even three things in the back of your mind while you sing and it all starts with exercises which you then build into your regular singing so this video is in response to a question from may in new delhi india she said she either thinks about inhalation or she thinks about exhalation or else her singing but she cannot think of three things at once remember there are two steps to breathing right breathing is inhalation and then exhalation and in singing we want controlled exhalation also known as support so if you have not watched the videos in my big playlist on breathing and breath support please do so to make the most out of this video so i want you to think of the breathing singing cycle as circular no stopping no holding in singing nothing ever stops because everything is always moving if you're always thinking of three different things three different steps such as inhalation oh then i have to control and exhale oh then i have to support with my abs oh but then i gotta have my open throat and sing you're always gonna be confused and you're going to be segmented all over the place we have to learn how to put this all together establish vocal freedom by getting rid of the vocal roadblocks so our first exercise is going to be the circular breath all i want you to do is inhale allowing the air to come into the body spontaneously and exhale on a hiss like this and can you do the hand movements with me you know i'm a fan of hand movements let's go inhale again inhale good and in that hiss you should feel some gentle engagement in the midsection spongy firm that's your flexible support so we're going to do it again so you experience the spontaneity and remember when we are exhaling on the hiss we are not deflating this is your controlled exhalation your support engagement throughout the midsection inhale one more time for sure inhale great nothing ever stops everything stays free exercise two we're going to inhale over four beats and we're going to exhale on the hiss for 12 beats meaning you're off on 13. i will count on my fingers while we all do this together inhale exhale remember if you had a lot of breath left over after those 12 beats you took in too much air we better do it again inhale for four exhale for 12 on the hiss inhale exhale excellent now how to apply this to singing we're going to do the same exercise inhale for four but now we're going to exhale while we hum with that same gentle engagement all the way around the midsection here we go go any pitch it doesn't matter what pitch you hum at okay again inhale exhale [Music] congratulations you have just multitasked now exercise 4 we're going to increase the speed of our inhalation instead of four beats it's going to be over three beats and you're going to sustain for 12 beats on either the hum or you can go to a vowel mom or any vowel of your choice okay here we go [Music] okay it's gonna get harder exercise five inhale for only two beats and sustain for twelve so now pay attention to your support here we go exercise six you guessed it inhale for only one beat but you have to sustain for 12 beats all in one breath if possible here we go [Music] you see this is how important your breath support is if you're going to sustain long lines we better do it again remember inhale for one beat sustain for 12 beats here we go [Music] now exercise seven is it even possible we're going to inhale for a quick catch breath of a half a beat so it's gonna be um here we go did you get that catch breath if not you better watch my video on the catch breath i think we better do it again so remember it's okay no cheating don't breathe while i clap no it's clap breathe it's a catch breath here we go [Music] i'm not gonna say this is easy this takes a lot of stamina which you build in the exercises exercise eight it's time for you to apply to your particular song so remember it's the spontaneous breath circular and then support and sing at the same time no stopping let me demonstrate something in the way she moves attracts me like no other lover or foreign is born you see when you don't hold back when you don't hold your breath your singing has much more buoyancy you become more spontaneous would you like to do your vocal exercises with me every day then be sure to get my program victoria's victorious vocal
