How to Wind a Bobbin on Sewing Machines with Top Loading Bobbin System

Presented by Rachel from Curly Quilt

Applicable Machines

  • Demonstrated on Janome Skyline S9
  • Principles applicable for any top loading bobbin system

Materials Needed

  • Good quality spool of thread
    • Recommended brands:
      • Mettler Silk Finish Cotton
      • Polyester threads
      • Aurifil
      • Gutermann (from Joann's)
      • Sulky
    • Avoid: Coats and Clark or Dual Duty (not suitable for computerized machines)

Setup for Winding a Bobbin

  1. Thread Selection:

    • Use a high-quality thread for better machine performance.
    • Poor quality threads can lead to frequent re-threading and machine issues.
  2. Thread Placement:

    • Place the thread spool with a spool cap to secure it.
    • Ensure the spool cap is appropriately sized to prevent tangling.
  3. Threading the Bobbin:

    • Pinch the thread to maintain tension while winding.
    • Follow the machine’s threading guide, which may be printed on the machine.

Bobbin Winding Process

  1. Prepare the Bobbin:

    • Use a Class 15 plastic bobbin for Janome machines.
    • Avoid metal bobbins; they are not ideal for machines with plastic bobbin cases.
  2. Threading the Bobbin:

    • Insert the thread through the bobbin hole.
    • Position the bobbin on the winder, ensuring it clicks into place.
  3. Winding the Bobbin:

    • Engage the bobbin winder and press start.
    • Increase speed to full using the machine’s start/stop button for consistent tension.
    • Clip the starting thread and let the bobbin wind.
  4. Checking Bobbin Fullness:

    • If the bobbin does not fill fully, adjust the stopper.
    • Stop manually when the bobbin is full.
    • Ensure the thread is tightly and evenly wound.

Troubleshooting

  • If thread gets caught:
    • Remove the winder arm, clear the thread, and replace it.
    • Align notches when reattaching the arm.

Installing the Bobbin

  1. Removing Bobbin Cover:

    • Slide the cover to access the bobbin case.
  2. Inserting the Bobbin:

    • Ensure the thread is on the left, resembling a ‘P’ for perfect tension.
    • Follow the machine’s diagram to position the thread.
    • Swing the thread under metal arms for proper tension.
  3. Completing Installation:

    • Snip excess thread using the thread cutter.
    • No need to pull up the thread manually.

Conclusion

This method is applicable for most top-loading bobbin systems. If further assistance is needed, leave a comment or stay tuned for more tutorials on threading the needle, changing needles, and changing presser feet.
