Plato's Artistic Philosophy Explained

[Music] [Applause] art is an often misunderstood element of the Republic as most people believe that Plato did not think that art was good at all such a mistake is easily rectified when we consider that Plato was a playwright and his Works were all dialogues taking on an artistic form in the elves what Plato was really stressing is that those who create must be knowledgeable and masters of their craft Plato explains this by starting with the concept of a couch he explains that the couch exists in the form of an idea a Craftsman grabs hold of this idea and using his skills and raw materials creates the couch in a physical sense that one can sit on an artist then comes around sees that same couch and decides to paint a picture of it the artist is not in this sense sense working with the prime ideas but rather with a lesser copy of the idea hence the artist does not know anything about the object besides what it looks like making his knowledge inferior this is the sort of art that Plato fights against in the Republic for more information on this topic check out the 602 philosophy blog linked in the comment section there you will find helpful resources links to free ebooks and more if you have questions about any Topic in philosophy post Post in the comments below and your question could be featured in the next 60-second Q&A video subscribe and we'll study this together thanks for watching 602 philosophy
