Historical Rivalry of Madrid Football Clubs

while their fortunes differ historically come Derby Day both sets of Madrid fans want nothing more than to get one over their rivals although it lediko have established themselves as a legitimate player in the European circuit as of late they were previously a club that celebrated their failures while Real Madrid were racking up European titles Hey how are you I'm Adrian and welcome to another roots of the rivalry where we take a look at the history of the two sides involved in the Derby and try to get down to the essence of why these two rivals just can't stand each other now remember folks this isn't a complete history of every encounter between these two clubs more of a dive into the political and sporting and cultural reasons that put them at odds as you know we always start by taking a look at the foundational history of the two teams so we can see where they came from and we keep it chronological so that means that Real Madrid is first but given that I covered Real Madrid's history and our El Clasico roots of the rivalry or if you're a die-hard fan and know it already then feel free to kill my watch time and jump ahead to this timecode I'm joking by the way don't feel any guilt if you already heard me talk about their history or if you're super familiar by all means go ahead to that timecode otherwise if you want a refresher or are new to the series then join me as I'm sure you're aware already Englishmen are responsible for spreading the sport around the world and in Spain it was no different a few students from Oxford and Cambridge who are studying at institution libre de enseñar Nessa helped to start the first football club in Madrid called Sociedad sky football in 1897 three years later however the club split into two tanned huevos Sociedad the football or the new football society and Madrid Football Club the first president in Madrid's history was Julio Palacios or the man who was at the helm of the club when it was officially made into a company on March 6 1902 was Juan Pablos given that football was growing in popularity extremely quickly in Madrid Madrid Football Club pitched the idea of throwing a tournament in honor of the coronation of Spain's king alfonso xiii calling it the copa de la coronation or the coronation cup so yes the copa del rey was sort of Real Madrid's idea as they pitched the idea for the copa de la coronation which preceded the copa del rey so when did they change their club's name in 1920 that king alfonso xiii gave real madrid its royal title thus the club was henceforth known by the name you know today really Madrid alright let's switch gears here now and go to the red and white side of Madrid and take a look at atlético's beginnings just one year after Real Madrid had become an official club / company students from the Basque Country who are studying in Madrid came to the decision to start their own Club doing so on April 26th 1903 in fact the club that they started was actually associated with Athletic Bilbao from their home in the Basque Country as they named their Madrid branch of the club Athletic Club succour sala de madrid athletic bilbao wanted to help establish a footballing power in madrid for their fans in order to compete with Madrid Football Club in the capital the new club in Madrid even adopted the same kids as Bilbao which at the time were the blue and white of Blackburn from England yeah if you've watched this series before or you're in the know already then you'll have known that teams all over Europe used the same strip as clubs from England and just quickly because it's a fun side note how do they come to be red and white well apparently a board member made a trips to England in 1911 and while he was there he was tasked with picking up more black burn kits he couldn't find any so he grabbed some white and red striped Southampton kits instead both Athletic Bilbao and athletic Madrid adopted the new kits but the Madrid branch of the club kept their blue Blackburn shorts and the rest is history as Atletico can still be seen in the red and white stripes and blue shorts today the same combination they've worn since 1911 with enrique n day as the club's first president these two rivals didn't face each other in a competitive match until the 2nd of December 1906 in the Madrid championship it was a close match but lost Merengues came out on top two to one let it go wouldn't have much glory in their history for quite a while in 1913 they met the rivals in the regional championship once again with the hopes of qualifying for the copa del rey athletic lost and cut ties with bilbao and became an independent entity no longer having direct ties to bilbao in 1921 they won the regional championship then again in 1925 all the while gaining more and more due to the fact that the rivals now dubbed Real Madrid after being shown favor by the king as mentioned had started signing the best players from other Madrid clubs causing many to dissolve and cease to exist in the eyes of many non real fans in the capital it was like the rich stealing from the poor and the animosity toward rial really started to ramp up so those who no longer had a club to support started supporting athletic madrid as they deemed that as a better alternative to supporting the club that stole from them due to the spanish civil war athletic madrid lost eight of their players and were in dire times financially so they came to the decision to merge with the spanish air force and their name was changed to Atletico avión de Madrid it's here where the politics of who really is the favorite club of the regime start to get caught up in this rivalry the regime being Francisco Franco's and here's some additional history that's important in the context of these two Madrid rivals the namesake of Real Madrid's Stadium Santiago bernabéu was elected president of the club on December 15th 1943 after having captained the side a stint as the director of football and eventually the manager of the club in the 1930s Merivale had the goal of making Real Madrid an international powerhouse of football and under his tutelage Real Madrid brought in legendary players like Alfredo di stéfano Raymond Kopa and Francisco Gento a lethal partnership that brought much glory to the club in 1956 with bernabéu as one of the organizers the inaugural UEFA European Cup competition was held with Real Madrid being the first team to ever win it in fact they won the first five iterations of the Cup in one of the most dominant periods in European history rivaled only by iooks and Bayern Munich in the 70s and well I guess by Madrid themselves in recent times dictator Francisco Franco saw the political benefit of having the best football team in the world as an ambassador for the country on the global political stage these foreign players representing Madrid such as Coppa and the Stefano flew in the face of a law that Franco had passed which ruled that foreign players were not allowed to compete in Spain after cutting ties with the Air Force and becoming known as club atlético de Madrid in 1947 and cosigned coach helena herrera a former player and began winning titles but with their foreign players no longer allowed to compete after this hit Atletico harv as I said there are claims that go in both directions some say Atletico was favored by the regime while many fans that didn't support Real Madrid would chant an equipo de gobierno divert Gwen's Adele Pais or the team of the government the shame of the country each side is sort of pointing the finger at the other as far as favoritism from Franco and the government goes though was most commonly accepted that Real Madrid was the team of the government though the government did help other teams as well speaking of the fans though the traditional dichotomy was that Atletico fans were from the working-class southern part of Madrid while real supporters were spread across the entire city they could be found everywhere due to their success drawing in fans from all social classes and districts but the team was later located in the more modern affluent northern part of Madrid North versus south you'll find the Santiago bernabéu Stadium amongst banking buildings newer architecture international corporations fresh clean roads well let eco their longtime stadium the vicente calderon was located in the south of madrid where the common folk were located along the river Manzanares right next to an old brewery and a formerly derelict plot of land although there is a plan now I believe to revitalize that area and make it into nice condos or something speaking to FourFourTwo magazine fans from both sides summed up the differences perfectly one Atletico fan compared Real Madrid to Disney while Atletico is more akin to reality in all of the frustration and ups and downs that come with life another this time a real fan likened it to comparing caviar Madrid to cocido Atletico Casino of course is a stew that's extremely cheap to prepare and commonly associated with the working-class of Madrid think of like Scouts a bowl of scouts if you're familiar with that something you probably are familiar with is that Letta COEs nicknamed lost Colchoneros or the mattress makers a name given to them due to the fact that in the early 20th century nine times out of ten when you bought a mattress it would come packaged in white and red fabric but perhaps the nickname that's the most illustrative of the differing fortunes of these two clubs over the is El Papa's translation the jinxed ones this name was actually given to Atletico by their own president back in 1974 our president whose name you'll surely recognize Vicente Calderon Calderon coined the term following atlético's in 1974 a European Cup final defeat to Bayern Munich what made it so unlucky for them well in what was an extremely tight match that ended up going to extra time in the 114th minute Luiz Aragones sure he recognized that name scored a picture-perfect free-kick so six or so minutes remained in the match and Atletico was holding off Bayern that is until the final minute of regulation when defender Jorge Swardson back desperately smashes the ball from 25 to 30 yards out and it goes in it was a hit and hope and it worked there is no shootout no extra extra time and so for the first and last time ever the European Cup final how to replay they straight up replayed the final match at hazal and this time it didn't go so well for atlético as they hemorrhage four goals and lost for nil from then on vicente calderon dubbed them and pupas the jinxed ones and the decades following that felt like one big embodiment of Murphy's Law everything that could go wrong footballing wise would go wrong footballing wise and the fans became the epitome of pessimistic towards their team expecting defeat instead of victory when they took to the pitch to illustrate the disparity between the two Madrid clubs even further or at least culturally you just need to look at how they celebrated their clubs and tanneries in 2002 Real Madrid celebrated in style with a full orchestral rendition of their club anthem hala Madrid sung by Spanish opera legend Placido Domingo [Music] atletico on the other hand while they started the day off with a Paia feast for their fans and where we all had hala Madrid Atletico commissioned joaquin sabina spanish folk singer to sing their centenary anthem reasons for a feeling which in typical atletico style celebrated their failures the chorus what a way to win what a way to lose what a way to go down what a way to come up what a way to draw what a way to suffer the thing is due to a copyright disagreement Sabina never played the centenary anthem during the celebration instead the club played to The Rolling Stones track you can't always get what you want while treating their fans to videos of Atletico's past triumphs but mostly emphasized their past failures and perhaps going with the theme of the day Atletico ended up losing during their centenary celebration one nil to Osasuna at this time Atletico were in the midst of 25 matches spanning 14 years without winning a single Madrid derby but for the first time since 1999 atlético beat Madrid in the Copa del Rey final in 2013 14 years without defeating Real Madrid and they do it in a cup final I'll poop us no more correct Atleti is on the rise with the historic signing of Diego El Cholo Simeone as manager they're no longer in the shadow of their crosstown rivals hell even when the Europa League thanks to Simeone one year prior in 2012 and in 2014 they win La Liga and make the final of the Champions League against who else but Real Madrid it was written in the stars for them things were turning around and it was an even match Tyrell Atletico found the lead through Diego codeine in the 36th minute fast forward all the way to the 93rd and there's four minutes of added time Madrid has a corner and so it went extra-time and it lets you lose 4-1 now for most neutrals the collapse from Atleti and extra time seems unfathomable but for Atleti fans it was all too familiar after a lifetime of being in the shadow of your rival and you're thinking this is it this could be the turning of the tide not only is this our first Champions League title but we've done it against them and then it snatched from you in that final moment and that familiar feeling of oh no it's happening again we're falling into our old patterns washes over the fans and the entire team and at that point it was over besides exhaustion affecting their play Atletico lost the mental game decades of suffering falling upon the players having to live with the fact that they handed their eternal rivals la decima while they went back to being at pupas two years later it happened again this time with Real Madrid defeating Atletico in a penalty shootout another opportunity squandered another chip on the shoulder of the team that lives in the shade of their neighbours another failure for a club that has become far too familiar with that sinking feeling of loss especially when facing the rivals that they hate so vehemently who laugh at them from atop the statue of the goddess Sibelius with their world-record signings like Bale and Ronaldo so to sum it up there was a definite class division amongst fans but in modern times more strictly within the confines of football and footballing prestige and less of a social standing divide you have one club the most successful Club not only in Spanish history but in European history as well representative of the glitz and glamour of football in the affluent part of the city itself well that let it go to their fans at least became a celebration of their failures in football with the times that they felt cheated by the rivals being representative of the fans frustrations politically towards their government as well back in the day for this reason the Madrid derby historically at least was a more fierce rivalry even than al clásico at times given that the stakes were so much higher for both clubs but for vastly different reasons one club couldn't bear the possibility of losing to the chronic losers as they see them and one team expects to lose but want to win as a statement against the establish and for the rest of the downtrodden not just in Madrid but in Spain and so there you have it I hope that this helped illustrate just how important this Darby is to matrilineal if you enjoyed this video then alike is always appreciated and if you want more roots of the rivalry among many other videos then hit that subscribe button I'm Adrian this is a rabona TV and take care [Music]
