which is great to use in the class or as homework or just as you please tomorrow teaching is always free and always accessible so grade nine starts with very important history we discuss the second world war the war that shocked and changed the whole world in this war more than 30 countries were involved it lasted for six years and more or less 60 million people died during this war what helps me to grasp the massive scale of this war is to look at the numbers during this six years more than 900 000 aircrafts were manufactured over 4 000 warships were manufactured over 270 000 tanks were manufactured and of course millions upon millions of soldiers participated in this war it was also the war where millions of people who were deemed unfit mostly jews were killed systematically during the holocaust and lastly it was the war where the first and only nuclear weapon was used in warfare this was the second world war so before we just jump into the second world war let's go through the basics there are certain things that are just important to know before delving into the second world war there are three things i would like to mention in this lesson first off who fought against who how were the countries divided and what were these divisions called secondly we are going to go through the map we are going to see where are the prominent countries that participated in the second world war and lastly we are going to consider the second world war in a timeline when did it play take place and what happened before and after the second world war as i mentioned earlier more than 50 countries were involved in the second world war and these countries either fought on the side of the allies or the access powers in these lessons we are not going to discuss all the countries we are only going to look at the prominent countries on the allied powers and the prominent countries that were part of the axis powers starting with the axis powers let's start with germany germany is located in central west europe and was led by adolf hitler the face of the second world war then we move on to italy italy is just south in the southern part of europe and was the prominent ally of germany in europe and it was led by benito mossolini and then we can move over to the east the prominent ally of germany in the east was japan and i think it's important here to mention that for japan the war started much earlier it started in 1931 when they invaded manchuria and they invaded china a little bit later on in 1937. japan was led by the prime minister hideki tojo and the emperor of japan was hirohito so these three countries formed part of the three-party pact also known as the berlin pact and it was the main force of the axis powers right let's move over to the allied powers let's start with france france is just southwest of germany had a massive population in 1939 and was led by charles de gaulle then we can move over to the united kingdom led by the famous winston churchill who's the prime minister and the king at that stage was george vi and this piece of c the english channel between germany and england really saved the uk during the second world war then the giant soviet union which russia was part of formed part of the allied powers in 1941 when germany invaded russia the soviet union had a massive population and also lost the most people during the second world war and they were led by joseph stalin then he could move further to the east to china for china the struggle was not really hitler and nazi germany but rather japan who invaded them in 1937. china was led by shang kai shek then we move over to the united states of america in the far west this superpower joined only in 1941 the same year that the soviet union joined the war and they joined when japan bombed pearl harbor the united states of america was led by roosevelt for the largest part of the war so many people talked about the big four that would be the united states of america britain the soviet union and china i didn't mention france in the big four because the military power of france was neutralized quite early in the second world war so they weren't mentioned in the big four the big three is also a well-known grouping when you talk about the big three you talk about the usa britain and the soviet union and the big four was really the main force of the allied powers the second world war happened after the first world war which occurred from 1914 to 1918 the second world war started in 1939 to 1945 and the cold war started after the second world war from 1947 until the disintegration of the soviet union in 1991 so in every lesson i would like to include a word or term of the day in this lesson the term is nationalism nationalism is an idea and movement that promotes the interest of a particular nation as in a group of people especially with the aim of gaining and maintaining the nation's self governance over its homeland nationalism holds that each nation should govern itself free from outside interference okay so we have a bit of a bird's-eye view of the second world war and i think we're ready to delve deeper into the war in the description below check the powerpoint of the google slide and also the self marking assignment which you can complete in your own time and then i hope to see you next time tomomi not teaching is a
