Learner Permit Information
Process to Obtain a Learner Permit
Eligibility
: Must be at least 15 and a Utah resident.
Documentation
:
Proof of identity and birth date.
Social Security Number.
Two proofs of Utah address.
Proof of lawful presence (if not a U.S. citizen).
Tests
: 50-question written test, eye test at DLD office.
Application
:
Fill online application to receive appointment link.
Appointment at DLD office recommended to avoid long waits.
Appointment Day
:
Bring documents and parent/guardian if under 18.
Photo, eye test, submit $19 fee.
Parent signs for financial responsibility if under 18.
Permit issued upon passing tests and meeting requirements.
Learner Permit by Age
Age 15
: 6-month holding period, requires co-signing adult and driver education course.
Age 16-17
: Similar to age 15, 6-month holding period, co-signing adult, driver education.
Age 18
: No holding period, co-signing adult not needed, driver education required.
Age 19+
: 90-day holding unless taking driver education, no co-signing adult.
Front Seat Supervision
Ages 15-17: Supervised by licensed parent/legal guardian/instructor/responsible adult.
Age 18+: Supervised by licensed driver 21+ years old.
Financial Responsibility
Parents/guardians can withdraw financial responsibility, invalidating the minor's license until age 18 or a new application.
Teen Driver Restrictions
Night Driving
: No driving 12 am - 5 am with some exceptions.
Passenger
: Only immediate family for 1st 6 months.
