Wind Power Overview

What is Wind Power?

  • Definition: Wind power is the energy generated by moving air, caused by differences in atmospheric pressure.
  • Variability: Wind speeds vary based on:
    • Geography
    • Topography
    • Season

Optimal Locations for Wind Energy

  • Not all locations are suitable for wind energy generation.
  • Some locations are more optimal due to better wind conditions.
  • Optimal locations exist both on land and offshore.

Historical and Modern Use

  • Traditional Uses:
    • Milling grain
    • Pumping water
  • Modern Use:
    • Most commonly used to generate electricity.

Wind Turbines

  • Structure: Large structures with several spinning blades, usually three.
  • Function: Convert air motion into electricity using turbines and electromagnetic generation.

Advantages of Wind Power

  • Environmental Impact: No direct CO2 emissions during electricity production.
  • Global Importance: Increasingly important in the global electricity supply mix.

Challenges of Wind Power

  • Intermittency: Wind does not blow consistently, causing issues for power grid stability.
  • Cost: Historically higher than conventional electricity generation sources.
    • However, costs have declined significantly in recent years.
