Anatomical Terms and Positions

Importance of Anatomical Terms

  • Purpose: To precisely describe the location of features on a body.
  • Example: Saying "there's something on my stomach" is vague. Using terms like "2cm superior to the navel" provides clarity.

Anatomical Position

  • Standard Position: The body standing upright, arms at the sides, palms facing forward, and feet together.
  • Usage: Always apply anatomical terms to a person in the anatomical position.

Basic Directional Terms

Left and Right

  • Definition: Refers to the left and right sides of the person in anatomical position, not the observer.
  • Example: For a figure facing you, their left is on your right.

Anterior and Posterior

  • Anterior (Ventral): Front of the body.
    • Example: Belly button is on the anterior surface.
  • Posterior (Dorsal): Back of the body.
    • Example: Heels are posterior to the toes.

Superior and Inferior

  • Superior: Above or towards the head.
    • Example: Point A is superior to Point B.
  • Inferior: Below or towards the feet.
    • Example: Point C is inferior to Point B.

Proximal and Distal

  • Proximal: Closer to where the limb inserts into the body.
    • Example: Knee is proximal to the ankle.
  • Distal: Further away from the point of limb insertion.
    • Example: Wrist is distal to the elbow.
  • Note: Use only for points on the same limb.

Medial and Lateral

  • Medial: Closer to the midline of the body.
    • Example: Point A is medial to Point B.
  • Lateral: Away from the midline.
    • Example: Thumb is lateral to the little finger.

Anatomical Planes

Sagittal Plane

  • Definition: A vertical cut dividing the body into left and right parts.
  • Types:
    • Mid-Sagittal: Passes through the midline.
    • Parasagittal: Does not pass through the midline.

Frontal Plane

  • Definition: Divides the body into anterior and posterior portions.

Transverse Plane

  • Definition: A horizontal cut dividing the body into superior and inferior parts.

Oblique Plane

  • Definition: Passes through the body at an oblique angle.

Application

  • Example Question: Describe the position of the nose relative to the eyes.
    • Correct Answer: The nose is medial, inferior, and anterior to the eyes.

Conclusion

  • Understanding planes and terms allows for accurate description and analysis of both external and internal body structures.
  • Importance demonstrated through differing views in anatomical sections.
